New Champ TV deal 09:16 - Jul 6 with 12162 views | Northernr | Sky will show 228 live matches from 2019/20 - currently 112. Means they'll have to switch five or six games every weekend.

To accomplish that you'd basically need to have a Thursday, Friday, Saturday am, Saturday pm and Sunday Championship match every weekend with some Mondays.

"threshold" = upper or lower? They've given themselves some wiggle room with the wording there. Could be up to 228, or could (God help us) be at least 228

New Champ TV deal on 13:39 - Jul 6 by nadera78 | They're going with (something like) one main sports channel, a football channel, a cricket channel, a golf channel, a F1 channel. How they price those, and what packages you can get, will be interesting to see. And the knock-on effect too. For example, the football contracts don't pay for themselves through SKY subscribers, so other sports fans effectively subsidise football. A lot of Rugby League fans don't like the fact that their SKY subscriptions do that, but then on the flip side SKY know that RL is a popular TV sport for football subscribers. Curious to see how they're modelling this whole thing. And for FL clubs like QPR this could be very damaging indeed. I'd imagine season ticket sales will fall through the floor due to the fixture irregularity, meaning each individual game will have to promoted more, which is an additional and unwanted expense. The benefit of season tickets is that the club knows well in advance what its income is likely to be, so losing that certainty will make it very difficult to plan in advance. |
Yeh I wondered about rugby league as well, which obviously is a big part of the reason I have sky. I can't see there being a dedicated rugby league channel, so sky rugby? But they've lost a lot of union to BT. So does rugby league just get bunged onto the cricket channel so I have to subscribe to that? Does it get bumped around all of them so I have to still subscribe to all of them?

New Champ TV deal on 14:43 - Jul 6 with 2335 views | colinallcars | For traditional football supporters, the connection between us and the game has already become attenuated and could be completely broken soon. Those of us that always looked forward to Saturday and would make a whole day of it, having a few pints before the game, meeting friends and having a few more pints afterwards are in a diminishing minority. Now we are expected to try and squeeze the game in to suit television and whenever we have free time from work commitments. It's all crap.
New Champ TV deal on 14:49 - Jul 6 with 2313 views | Dorse | I think we should all just watch on-line porn and check the football scores afterwards. That'd show them.

Putting RL & RU together on one channel would cause one hell of a stink. Who gets the prime slots? Who gets better promotion? Who gets the most money? RL fans clearly out-subscribe RU (the viewing figures aren't even close) and you can imagine the outcry if they thought they were both subsidising union AND getting a worse deal. In theory they could run with a RL channel but it would only work if they got the NRL rights, which they had but lost and showed little sign of wanting back. That's 8 live games (with multiple repeats) plus a whole plethora of magazine shows that run throughout the week. In fact, Fox League is a dedicated RL channel in Australia, so SKY could simply take that. You could add in cheap broadcasts of games from France, from Academy fixtures, from women's RL to pad it all out a bit further. I'd be stunned if SKY did it though. Despite RL being 3rd in viewing figures (behind football and darts but way ahead of union, cricket, etc) the demographics just aren't appealing to advertisers.

Sky's Union is Super Rugby and internationals, with only half of the European cup fixtures, so timing clashes won't be a big issue, unless they pick up the NRL, but I heard a whisper that BT were interested! It would be an interesting challenge to sell a bundled channel to two groups who mostly claim to despise the other game. Like having a "religion" channel, combining Koran readings and evangelical hell-fire preachers. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

For overseas viewers yes. Trouble is, as I understand it, the club's channel won't be showing matches Sky picks up. Depending on how many that is, some might find subscribing not worthwhile.

Clive, As the RL go to man on this site, how do you think that Thursday night Rugby League has gone down with the RL regular sypporters? I know that on the Wakefield fan forum they are opposed to Thurday & Friday night games. Would this be the case in general? As far as the new Sky/Championship deal goes, many ST holders at all clubs, will be considering not renewing unless the price they pay is reduced.

To improve the atmosphere, they could keep the live games for Saturday at 3pm, and move every other game to Thursday night or Sunday morning..

Didn't know their rah rah content was so low, just show's how much of it I watch! Just looked up the NRL's deal with premier Sports, and it's a 5 year contract that ends this season. I wonder if SKY have shown any interest at all?
New Champ TV deal on 09:46 - Jul 7 with 1747 views | stevec | As peeved about this as most who attend LR though the maths certainly favour it as far as the clubs concerned. * Reckon our income on ticket sales is something like £7m a season, probably excluding box sales and add ons. 228 live matches is around 42% of total games played, on that basis we'd have about 10 home games on Sky. Assuming the existing £150k per game went up, say £200k, the club are looking at income of £2m per season extra so even if those attending dropped by up to 30%, the club are still better off. * Regards the club having their own pay channel, think that was muted at around £3 per game(?), over a 46 game season, if the club got 35,000 subscribers worldwide the income from that and Sky money for live games combined would actually mean Rangers could play in front of an empty stadium and still be no worse off. * * Footnote: not suggesting for a minute I'd want that, just pointing it out.

New Champ TV deal on 12:09 - Jul 6 by Northernr | well it's going to look increasingly like the Spanish fixture list which is staggered across the entire weekend. completely ignores the differing cultures of away support in the two countries of course but putting qpr v wolves on a Thursday night told you everything you need to know about how much Sky care about whether the ground is full or not. |
Yes. No reply to my request on the viewing figures for the QPR v Wolves fixture - both on email and Twitter.

MY mistake, they have more, including Pro 12 (Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Italy) and French Top 14. I doubt viewing figures are any good, but all about making subscribers sign up to them as well as BT. Hence BT's apparent interest in NRL, to go from nothing to interest RL fans to something. PS I'd just like to add, 14-12, Bunny-boy! [Post edited 7 Jul 2017 13:03]
