We don't elect leaders in this country, we elect parties.
Not sure what you expect her to do, ignore him? I'm sure most of us at work have to be nice to people we'd rather piss on, this is just another version of that

Good grief you sound like you need a lie down in a darkened room. All this excitement is clearly having a detrimental affect on your state of mind. Here's something to cheer you up

I don't particularly like her, but she went up in my estimation tonight. It was quite a clever speech I thought. For the benefit of the American public, she seems to have taken a position in between Trump and the more moderate core of the Republican party. She seemed to cherry pick between those two extremes. Maybe 'we' think that Trump won't go the distance and she's gone along with that opinion. What else could she do in front of a bunch of Republicans? It wasn't a disaster anyway.

It is what it is as JFH used to say. I think there's a number of reassuring barbs and red lines drawn in what she's going to say. Impossible situation - Brexit means US is v important to us, meanwhile US elect a fcking rabid nutcase. What speech would you write?
If they are going to kill him it would be great if they could hold off until me flight at 2115 local time otherwise I'll be stuck here in this giant looney bin masscarading as a country.

It is with mild amusement that I note the underestimation of Donald Trump continues.
Yeah but I bet people were expressing the same sort of sentiment on football message boards in the 1930s about Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussoloni, and DIxie Dean. And you can shove (not you personally Bos) Godwin's law up your Manhattan Berchtesgaden.

And in many things he is to the LEFT of the Republican establishment. He used to be a Democrat, and donated to the Bill Clinton campaign. Electricians' Union members showed huge support for him today. Car workers happy too that their jobs not going to Mexico. Just waiting now for the Flint Water Crisis to be tackled and he'll have sewn up Michigan for the next 8 years. Democrats are bleeding blue collar supporters to him by the thousands. Against that... Hollywood (generally) hates him. Media (generally) hates him. Privileged Liberal Elites positively loathe him. Planned Parenthood has gone nuclear before their federal funding gets cut. And the Liberal money men are funding as many fringe groups as can be found to make noise.

Been a labour voter all my life , but when I look at this crop of mp's masquerading as socialists just to get a position I look at mrs May and think how lucky we are to have found a PM who seems to put the country 1st

Yes, we are all waiting to see what he can or will do. We are also waiting to see what the cost will be for what he attempts (success or not), and who will pay it.
Some particular areas of concern: Human rights (especially women's rights) Free Trade Foreign Policy (esp. China and the Middle East) Climate Change His own accountability

Watch this space.
Exactly.
May was picking him off on most of these areas. She's also worried about the trade agreement with the USA.
Will be interesting to see how they get on today.
I suspect that it's not going to be great.

Unelected?? She's elected by the people of Maidenhead to be their MP. Just as PM Gordon Brown was elected by his constituents.
Which of course is constitutionally true.
The awkward bit of course is:
"So whenever Gordon Brown chooses to call a general election, we will be ready for him. He has no democratic mandate. He has a reputation tainted by his failures after a decade in office. And he has no new ideas. An early election? Bring it on,”
Theresea May, 2007

Clive, rather than this board being choked like japanese Knotweed or a labour politician gagging on a blood orange soaked in amyl nitrate seeking sexual nirvana through the sensual medium of hypoxia with these perpetual Trump/Labour/ Brexit threads, can you just hand out 'The art of self deliverance' published by the hemlock society to those in such withering torment.
for those who seek sanctuary , the ross mcormack thread still hasnt got the karl henry tory tweet on it, any poems about dead fascists, or that bloke being punched in the side of the head by stoat maneuvers.
The Duke Of New York. A-Number One.

I think that Blair had indicated that he'd stand down prior to the completion of the term of office for which he was elected, before that election. So did Cameron. In addition Cameron was always likely to walk if he lost the refendum which he'd also promised beforehand. So it wasn't as if we were completely in the dark in either case.
