Tata 15:48 - Jan 17 with 36898 views | raynor94 | Looks like up to 800 job losses to be announced, 600 at Port Talbot, a devastating blow for the area, let's just hope Tata keep the faith and see these rough times through

Tata on 17:00 - Jan 17 by Wingstandwood | The SWEP columnist stated that Monk post-sacking tried to have KOL reinstated yes! Also that columnist tried via print to have KOL reinstated in two separate articles................The poor little victim KOL? That was the way it was portrayed. Nothing gets my back up than seeing heart-bleeds over-pampered managers. footballers and coaches and their parallel universe world of perceived injustice and victim hood. I have contracted at Port Talbot steel (like previous thousands) myself and I have every sympathy for the workforce. [Post edited 17 Jan 2016 17:08]

I didn't know that. | |

Tata on 16:35 - Jan 17 by Darran | It's not going to stop people buying steel from Asia, they could step in and lower rates etc but it's only a matter of time sadly. |
Despite contracting there I never got to know ithe true Port Talbot workforce capacity at its heyday. I think you may be in the know. Am I right to say it was once tens of thousands?.......I think some young un's may be in for a shock to learn how many that place used to employ? [Post edited 17 Jan 2016 17:06]

Tata on 17:10 - Jan 17 with 2372 views | dickythorpe | Forgive me for attempting to try and theoretically trying to save some jobs here. Remember Tyrone o'sullivan, didn't hextry to get workers and private local backers to invest? Would tata sell some of the industry to locals? Sorry if I haven't articulated this well or understood the industry/scale etc. Just thinking out loud.

Yeah it may have been a tad short I done a wiki check and it said The Abbey Works (was it once called that?) during the 1960's 18,000. If contractors are not included in that I'd guess not all that far off 20,000. Nevertheless a substantial figure!

Tata on 17:15 - Jan 17 with 2356 views | Swanzay | It shines how much the Govt don't care when propossals such as the HS2 upgrade, the Govt chose steel from China as the preferrential supplier, IF it goes ahead! The expansion of the London underground also sourced steel from abroad, which is a poorer grade and cheaper option of whats produced in the UK. The whole thing is a disgusting mess, yet Osbourne doesn't give a crap, as it futher enables him to build gaps between those that had and his chummy friends!

Fair point and it was called that because there was an Abbey built inside the grounds 100s of years ago there's part of it still there and there's a myth that if the remains fall down the steelworks falls down. Many people have reported seeing the ghost of a monk too. That's not a joke. [Post edited 17 Jan 2016 17:20]

The ghost probably looks after the Margam Park big cat that Darran's mate has spotted during one of his 'shroom sessions.

Tata on 17:31 - Jan 17 with 1969 views | Dracan66 | Yes it was 18,000 workers in it's 60's heyday and and that was down to approx 6,000 during the 80's. BP Chemicals also employed 2,500 at their Baglan plant before closing. It's an eye opener when we think of all the skilled jobs that have brought wealth and prosperity to numerous communities are now no longer there.

Its truly shocking the decline!.............Add to that Velindre, Duport Steel, the numerous pits and other large scale employers e.g. Walkers/Smiths etc (endless list!) that have either closed or working on a fraction of original workforce.

Tata on 17:42 - Jan 17 with 1929 views | Dracan66 | Yes I remember that too and the flaring off in the middle of the night that illuminated the night sky. Hardly the most healthy upbringing in hindsight, British Steel on one side and BP Chemicals on the other. But still it was home.
