Vic mobeley was signed from Sheffield Wednesday for around 50k when I was a mere nipper but due to him being involved in the Peter Swan betting scandal he never played for us and I don't know if we got our money back. Jim Gregory would have been chairman in those days so would love to know the true what's and all story.

The only other high profile player who we signed but never got to see was Richard Ord who I think cost us around 500k from sunland.

Any others you can think off?

Who was the Dundee midfielder Wilkins was on his way to see when he got the sack? Always kept an eye on him after that (never amounted to much) but I've forgotten his bloody name now.

Carl Leaburn played for us for about 15 inglorious minutes at Reading.

Gavin Rae?

We very nearly signed Mickey Hazard from Chelsea in the late 80s. I remember reading in the paper that he was gutted that the move broke down at the last minute. Chelsea pulled out of the deal apparently.

Wasn't it a Dundee UNite midfielder called David Hannah?

We were milliseconds away from signing Roberto Baggio in 1996. But he got lost around Hammersmith Broadway and was never seen again.

Along the same lines - incredible players we've been linked with.

The two I recall are - Schmeichel, who we genuinely were after until United snaffled him and we took Stejskal. And when Lineker had finished with Barca I think we may have been in the running, vaguely, until Venners took him to Spurs.
Later Ronaldinho, I spose.

Bare bones.

Ray Houghton had a trial and was told he wasn't good enough before destroying us in 1986 for Oxford and several games after when he signed for liverpool

This takes the thread in another direction but we also missed Pearce like that, I have heard Houghton commentate on our games a few times, I think he followed us as he speaks fondly about the old players, add Tony Gale to the list also and we would have had some team.

I also remember a rumour of us going for Wright and Robbie Earle.

Colin Viljoen. South African born Ipswich midfielder - very exotic for the time. Didn't he play on a pre-season tour in the late 70s in Ireland or Scandinavia? Fell down a fjord? Lost in a bog?

Great shout , I remember that ,
We had a fee agreed of around 250k may have been 87 when they got relegated
Bates pulled the plug on that , again would have been a brilliant signing at the time

What about Leon Knight @ Sam Parkin they were close to signing but pulled out due to wages

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Mamady Sidibé

After he tore us a very depressing new one for Swansea in the FA Cup, he was on trial with QPR in pre-season and I think he scored a couple (One against Celtic?) and was blatantly head and shoulders better then anything we had up front. Ollie wanted him but I believe he got a better offer from Gillingham (a league above QPR) for who he signed. Did well there. Real shame Ollie coundn't pull that deal off.

Did footballing giant Dominic Shimmin ever play for us?

Feels like half of Paliadini's brown envelope signings never put the shirt on.

Leon Knight's dad told him to go to Brighton because they played better football than us didn't he? Worked out well.

Sam Parkin always wanted to come as he's a QPR fan but the stars never quite aligned.

Martin Bullock was another in those Sidibe games who we wanted but couldn't afford who went on to play well against us over the next couple of seasons.

Loving this thread by the way.

others i remember shitting myself with excitement and' waiting to be rubber stamped ' according to brian moore on the big match, were ian walsh for around £300,000 the old crystal palace forward , Alan curtis the swansea forward for £500,000 , both under tommy docherty.

Also Bougherra from Rangers when we went up under warnock iirc, was a close one.

Yes, went to a friendly at the old goldstone ground and he played in midfield and looked quite useful ......probably why we didn't sign him

Remember a few years back sitting in the p1ssing rain watching Kettering vs QPR
In a pre season friendly
Sitting next to me was Andy Marshalls dad who played in goal that night
He was telling me it was between us and a perm club that was going to sign him
I think judging by the look on my face he thought he was talking rubbish
A week later he signed for Villa
I wonder what happened to him

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore
