Eder the backup striker 11:47 - Oct 6 with 5589 viewsRichythejack

Is it me or is this a position we always struggle with?

I think the season we had Bony and Gomis was our best in many years if Gomis would of accepted he was back up and just got on with it. I feel this is our biggest downfall this season as we have given into Gomis a bit and feel that because he has pretty much demanded he will not be second string to anyone we have brought in a player like Eder who for me is not first team quality.

I just fail to see why we always struggle with this and maybe it’s down to us only playing one up front and failure to keep the second striker happy rather than just stating if he isn’t good enough to be first choice he needs to knuckle down and push his way into the team. Also might stop the first choice striker becoming complacent as we have seen nearly every year with strikers such as Graham and Gomis.
Hardly suprising when you have backup in the form of Emnes, Vasquez,Ngog,Lita etc

You should be Manager Lisa. It would probably work well. Ayew would put plenty of effort in at centre forward, stronger than Gomis and great in the air. It's whether Barrow or Routs would be good enough.

Not taking anything away from Ayew, as he is phenomenal in the air, especially for his height, but he would find it a hell of a lot harder without Gomis in there with him occupying the biggest centre back. We would probably revert to a more tiki taka style if we went with a false 9 anyway though.

Gomis = the new Scotland.
He'll score goals but they're not important when you don't run around enough see.

Eder is a decent back up from what I've seen, would have liked him to be off the mark by now to settle him down a bit. He's done everything but stick one in the back of the net so I think it will come. (Unless I'm forgetting one he has)
Monk keeping Gomis happy.. Taken him off a few times.. I personally wouldn't have benched him yet, he has scored 4 goals this season.. Like siggy, I think monk wants him to play himself out of a dip in goal scoring form and we haven't got the luxury to just drop top players like that.
How do we know Ayew will have the same chemistry with Eder? Knowing where each other are going in the box is something Gomis and Ayew have and Ayew benefits a lot from Gomis pulling defenders a certain way.

Gomis runs around far more than Bony did.

I think the jury is out because he has fantastic games and abject games. Fair enough really.

Yeah definitely fair enough and I tend to agree he's been frustrating last couple of games, just that 'he does nothing apart from score goals' sort of mentality gripes me a bit. Did when Scotland was here as well.

I remember saying at the time that it was a shame that the ref gave us the pen at Southampton instead of letting Eder's 'goal' stand as it could well have kickstarted his season.

This.

All but the very, very best strikers need games to be fully match sharp. Judging Eder on the odd cup game or cameo from the bench is unfair.

Although having said that he appears to have more about him than most of his predecessors.

To be fair Doc a traffic cone was more productive than his predecessors

How many of you know what DP stands for?
