Leroy Fer loses 4k 02:49 - Sep 24 with 7885 viewsFredManRave

Sounds like he's chomping at the bit to get back playing after his Sunderland "dissapointment". Great news for us as a fit and firing Fer could and should do some serious damage in this league. On form he'd be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Bench on Friday, impact sub to kill the game off...

Totally agree. He's only in their because he takes responsibility for moving the ball forward. Henry for example will pass sideways or backwards out of fear of losing the ball. The fact he's highest in the league is probably not great but he's adjusting to the level and looks likely to improve with experience.

I think fer should replace Henry and hold. With his experience and physical presence he should be able to adapt to that role.

Is this a joke? Fer in place of Henry? They are totally different footballers and play totally different roles in the team.

Fer would be terrible in the defensive midfielder's role. The role Henry fills is tackler, breaker-up, general disrupter and defensive midfielder. Fer is good at carrying the call forward and has a wicked shot. He is rubbish at tackling, falls over all the time, has no mettle, no bottle, and is scared of getting in there and mixing it up.

Nothing in what I saw of Fer last year makes me think he would be a good fit in the role that Henry fills. Sandro would, but certainly not Fer.

Dylan, you'd be a half-decent replacement for Henry the way he's playing at the moment.

Bare bones.

Whilst this may be true (probably is on current form), Fer had proven himself on countless occasions to be awful in a 2 man central midfield.he simply doesnMt have the discipline or work rate to track back properly...which leaves is wide open. Playing him there away from home would be a huge gamble! You're better served dropping Luongo deeper and playing Fer at no. 10. But Luongo's only weakness is being a tad lightweight so there's still risk attached. Sandro or Doughty need to play with Faurlin and then it's 3 from 4 ahead of them.

Although Fer is not interested in scrapping and the defensive side of the game in general, he can tackle.

No joke, just an opinion. Most of this message board were moaning that we're too defensive at home, this would address that.

I'd play Faulin/Tozer as the defensive midfielder with Fer alongside with a bit more license to get forward. Luongo shouldn't be moved to accommodate Fer and as far as I can tell he's not done anything wrong so either Fer gets on for Henry and he adapts to suit that role or he can stay on the bench. Fer has probably played several times in a central role and been asked to tackle etc so don't see what the issue is, it's hardly the most dramatic transformation for a player to go through.

Its Fer or Luongo I dont see either being able to adequately contribute elsewhere or being a better bet than Sandro alongside Faurlin. Appreciate I might be in a minority of one but I am not as enamored with Luongo as others. I think he is one paced a little bit lazy defensively (but then again so is Fer) far to easily knocked of the ball and seems weak in front of goal. On the plus side he is busy in the final third and forward thinking.

I would be inclined to pick Dutch international Fer in the number 10 role - sorry

As long as Luongo comes back in two games later when Fer and Sandro realise it's a bit rough in the Championship and they're better off sitting it out until Jan then that's ok.

if Fer is to play then it needs to be further up the field in the hole behind Charlie. He is far more use in that area and trying to get forward, proved good support with a great shot on the few occassions he got to play there and in this league should be more effective.

i think Luongo could drop in alongside Ale at home and do a sufficient job there. he often nicks the ball and gets around the pitch well, at home we should be on the front foot with the players we have and that isn't helped by KH recycling the ball back to Ned, who under pressure kicks it straight to the opposition.

hence why we seem more effective away and using KH then might make more sense.

with an attacking line up including Charlie, Chery, Phillips and Fer we should be going for it at home and bollox to what the opposition put out against us.

Not sure I agree with those that say Fer can only play 'the number 10'.

Fer’s been with us over a season now but I don’t think anyone can say with any certainty where he can or cannot play, other than that he probably shouldn’t play on the left wing.

When he arrived he seemed very undercooked to me, poor fitness and seemed to struggle in the centre of the park a result. Then we went through his left wing stage which although wasn’t as bad as some say, probably wasn’t the right position for him and he struggled a bit at times. And finally we had a few occasions where we got to see his flair side playing off the front man in the ‘number 10’ role where he looked pretty decent.

In a 4-4-2, from what I’ve seen, I think he’d struggled in the middle of the park but in a 4-2-3-1, I’m not in the camp (yet) that thinks he can’t play as one of the deeper lying midfielders. Away at Everton, playing deep with Vargas as the lone front man, I actually thought Fer played well. Excellent touch and seemed to help us set a good tempo with sharp, crisp passes out wide. I think the games moving on. To be a deep lying midfielder doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be able to throw yourself into tackles, not be very good with the ball and win a lot of heads Karl Henry style. You can be a defensive presence without being a destroyer. That’s especially the case if you have a deep lying player alongside you as part of the 4-2-3-1 system.

So what I’m basically saying, injury, being part of an underprepared team and being played out of position on the wing, has made judging Fer the footballer and where best to use him, a tricky one. I still need to see a bit more.

I'm with Simmo here. Luongo was bought as one of the deeper lying midfielders, it is where he played in pre-season and v Charlton. He gets stuck in in defence, and has the legs to go box to box. Faurlin next to him pulling the strings and Fer just ahead. Like others have alluded to, it is extremely attacking. I'd happily play a fit Sandro next to Faurlin, and Luongo higher up should we struggle or come up against the top teams. Horses for courses and all that.

The team has looked good with Ale as the deep lying linking midfielder. We have won 3 and drawn a ought one away with him in that role. Why mess with that?

I am not sure that Toczer has settled yet and haven't been overly impressed with his few games so far.

To me, Fer and Luongo bring similar skill sets to the team. Neither seem particularly suited to being a defensive midfielder.

On the other hand Henry, Sandro, and Doughty all fill that role. Why would we shoe-horn Fer or Luongo into a role where we already have options?

Fer is a quality player. I remember towards the beginning of last season, he played his best game for us in the middle and scored. Then we stupidly moved him to the left, where he was not suited whatsoever, and people would critise him for not playing well. The fact is that in most games that hes played in a central role (barely any games), he has been a huge player for us and has shown the quality he has and the asset he cam be to our side. I think behind Austin he would be much more effective than Luongo attacking wise, and I would move Lungo back further where he is also a very good player on the ball. Lungo looks great, but he wont give the goal threat that Fer has

The system requires of the two deeper CMs one to be a deep lying playmaker ( the number 8.) And one to be the destroyer (the number 4) I dont see how Luongo or Fer can play either of those positions and be better than what we have. Its a scrap between them for the 10 role and only that role, trying to shoehorn them into the same team would be a mistake.

Why is Luongo exclusively a number 10 all of a sudden? He's done well there, but that's because he's a very good and versatile player. He can attack and defend very well. He passes, he's tenacious in the tackle and has the legs to get up and down the pitch all day. That system with the deeper lying midfilder works just as well with a box to box midfielder - albeit more attacking but we have the personnel to steamroll teams if we wanted.

Luongo has also played that more central role through his career including doing very well there for Swindon, there's no reason he can't go there. He's already shown that purely attacking attributes are not his strongest so I would suggest we have better out and out number 10's, Fer chief amongst them.

I don't necessarily think it would be shoehorning them in to that position. Luongo played as a box to box player for Swindon, rather than a number 10. It would be extremely attacking, not having a destroyer in there to break up play and redistribute the ball, but as we have seen with Henry, at this level they are not as vital. Henry shone in the prem because we were under the cosh and needed someone to do the dirty work. When we are playing on the front foot he becomes significantly less effective, evidenced by how little influence he had in the play off season.

Furthermore, playing Ned and Angella/Hall as opposed to Dunne/Hill gives the defence more pace allowing it to push higher up the field. This negates the need for a single holding midfielder to occupy that space just in front of them constantly. I would certainly like to see Luongo deeper, with Fer in. Not saying it will definitely work, or that we won't recall Sandro/Henry BUT I think it could work and to discount it out of hand is rash.

Fair enough Dylan, but I'll just reiterate the point that a fit and firing Fer should be playing but he has to earn the right, as you say, hopefully starting on Friday...

I obviously can't comment on Luongo and Chery as I've hardly seen them play and when I have it's been from my armchair, however, the article below doesn't make for great reading for Luongo although I suppose it depends on how much you actually want to read into it;

Well according to that Article, Charlie Austin should also be dropped as he is the 3rd most dispossessed player in the league.. shame he is also top scorer, which basically rubbishes the importance of that stat. If you don't have possession you can't be dispossessed for a start.

I'd be more than happy to try Fer in the defensive CM role. I think his strongest position on the evidence so far is attacking CM but if it's more beneficial to the team for him to play the defensive role then so be it, got to be worth a try.

Fer and Sandro should walk back into the team; they are both classy and, in their right positions (Sandro Defensive Mid next to Ale) and Fer (one of the 'floating' three instead of Chery) HAVE to be picked.

I know its not the message we want to send out to Chery as one of the summer recruits, but Fer is better there. Their national manager thinks so and so do I.

So there...

Suppose it's just because he's looked a helluva lot better in the #10 role than when he's played further back for us. I haven't been as much as usual this season, but at Charlton Luongo didn't play as well as he has since (bit of a mangled-up sentence but I can't be arsed to re-write it, you know what I mean!). He didn't play badly exactly, showed nice touches etc, but he's looked far more natural and useful to this team played further forward.
