Rochdale AFC Who's Who 1939-1973 by Steven Phillipps 11:32 - Oct 5 with 13101 viewsrobbowood

Just published and available from

Tony Brown, 4 Adrian Close, Toton, Nottingham, NG9 6FL
tel 0115 973 6086
e-mail soccer@innotts.co.uk
web www.soccerdata.com

Cost is £12.50 plus £1.50 postage

146 pages and loads of individual photos plus team photos for 1949, 1959, 1961/2, 1966/7, 1971/2

The front cover includes a team photo on a 'cold day' in January 1962 (snow on the ground!!)

Those who of us who have bought Stephen's previous books on Dale will know what an amazing amount of research he puts in - we really are fortunate as so many other league clubs get little of their history published

In this period our greatest player Reg Jenkins played for Dale and Fred Radcliffe arrived at Spotland (the Football League's youngest chairman) and appointed Harry Catterick (later Everton) as one of our managers

Our penultimate game of the 1971/72 season was away to promoted Brighton and watched by over 34000 (Nine days later at Spotland against Port Vale, for our final game, the crowd was 2475 !!)

The book really is great value for money and anybody who follows the Dale and takes an interest in its history and our ex-players should buy a copy

Volume 1 which covers the period 1907 to 1939 is still available from Tony Brown at the same price

Hopefully Steven is already working on the period 1973 onwards as I for one cannot wait for it to be published

Sounds interesting. I'll be having a copy of that. Although 'Dale have always been my second team, in the era of 1960 to 1975 ish I went to Spotland regularly and even went away to games in this area.
The promotion team of the late 60's was a great little team that played tremendous football. Happy memories of the Coventry game and that pre-season game against Everton. That was the best performance I've ever seen from a Rochdale team !

Excellent news for all us students of Dale history.

If the 1962 picture is the one I'm thinking of, it was one taken during the League Cup run and has been used a few times since. I know I provided it for one of the broadsheets when Bradford reached the League Cup Final.

Hopefully Steven's next book will contain even more photos as I've promised to collaborate with him and the publishers with images from more recent times.

front cover as above (back cover has Dale programme v Norwich City Football League Cup First leg)

tvos1907 is this the 1962 photo you are thinking of - any idea what Steven's next book is on (Who's Who 1973 onwards ?) and when likely to be published

Yeah, that's the same picture. The copy I have is much sharper than that one, so I'm wondering whether it's been scanned from somewhere.

I've emailed Steven this morning about if 1973-2014 is his next project, so we'll see what he says.

The photo on the book cover is indeed much sharper (than the one I have done using my antiquated printer scanner hence not all that 'sharp' )

Ah, fair enough.

Steven hopes the third volume will bring all the players up-to-date, but that's a future project.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't all the League Cup games night matches ? That photo appears to be taken during the daytime.

They were.

I never said it was taken at a League Cup match, but at some point during the League Cup run, possibly on the Football League's instruction.

I'm going for a snowy Thursday afternoon in February.

If its the one I am thinking of, doesnt it have a club crest on. As you can see from the photo we didn't have the club crest on our shirts at that time (and I think that was the case in the actual final games too) which if correct means its not really a replica of the 62 cup final shirt.

However, I'm of the belief that this team photo was taken after the game (and possibly at the beginning of the 62/63 season...the photo featured in the Supporters Club Yearbook). Possibly some old búgger with a good memory can confirm.

Whether used in the final or not, it stands as a 1962 replica. I doubt many would buy old TOFFS shirts if they didn't have some kind of individual club recognition on them.

*EDIT* The same photo is in the book and listed as 1961-62

Yeah,Dale took on the Everton 1969 Champions side,Alan Ball,Brian Labone,Jimmy Gabriel, etc, and won 4-3. Great match,Everton weren`t there to make up the numbers either, but Dale were more than a match for them. Harry Catterick obviously saw something in Steve Melledew as he signed him not long afterwards, but to my recollection,he only made one appearance for the first team and that was as a sub. The next week Dale played Orient (they`d dropped the Leyton bit) at home in our first game in Division 3 for ten years and got duly walloped,3-0,Orient winning the title by a country mile that season.

Sorry Dave but your memory must be going, Jimmy Gabriel had been playing for Southampton since August 1967.
Re Steve Mellodew, he had a great game that night and gave Labone and Hurst a bit of a chasing. I've no doubt Harry Catterick thought he was worth a punt and came in for him shortly afterwards.
You're wrong about him getting a game with Everton's first team, he never made it at that level.
He was selected to play for the first team in a League Cup tie against Man City but a the last minute somebody remembered he already played in an earlier round of that competition that year for Rochdale.

Featured it in TVOS when we played Everton in a more recent pre-season:

Rochdale: Harker; Smith, Parry, Ashworth, Ryder, Downes, Rudd; Whitehead, Buck, Melledew, Butler
Everton: West; Wright, Hurst, Labone, Brown; Kendall, Ball, Harvey; Husband, Royle, Morrisey
Referee: Bob Matthewson (Bolton)
Attendance: 8,349

Seems a strange decision to stop at 1973. Why not include 1973-2014?

Time and cost.

Steven has a full-time job, so this has been a labour of love to do the two editions so far. It also means each volume can be kept at £12.

I know Volume 3 will be from 1973 to the present day, so hopefully that will be completed in the next couple of years.

No I haven't got the programme but I knew Everton had their full first team out. I couldn't remember who played on the the right wing Jimmy Husband or Alan Whittle, the rest of the team I could remember.
Anybody who thought this was just a pre-season game can forget it now. Everton came to win , they would busting a gut at the end, no mistake about that. It was a real ding dong game, as I said earlier the best performance I've ever seen from a Rochdale team.
Everybody played well but Norman Whitehead was outstanding and ran Sandy Brown ragged. How Whitehead never played at a higher level is a mystery.
One thing I remember was Howard Kendall taking a throw in directly in front of me and I could see a bald patch appearing at the back of head. I felt better seeing that !
