I might love the nags but I am the worst punter in the entire world so will keep my counsel. All I hope is that the odds on shots can be turned over, it is in real danger of boring us all into submission. No-one cares if they are Irish or English, just having short price favourites has never really been what Cheltenham is about. I've know keen horse racing fans, for all their lives, who have never been less enthusiastic about jumps racing and the sport really does feel at a low ebb. Needs a big (and safe for the horses) Cheltenham. where the big fields and crowds can remind us what the sport is really about. |

Ha! Oh for Marti to have a Bannister, Byrne, Wegs, Spencer.... |

It's been said many times but for the club to go into the season praying that Celar would be good and Frey would stay fit was just negligence. As disappointing as we have been today, it is still worth remembering Marti has almost kept us up already with so little up front. |

I think there is more to it than that. I am with you as a win-at-all-costs kinda guy, but I still feel long-term we have an issue where we have this cycle of starting the season badly, get some loans in, improve, do better, lose the loans, start badly..... How do we break the cycle? Better loans? We only need a few more points to stay up, then it really is all about next season for me. Many people don't care about the FA Cup - well I couldn't care about our league position if it is between 7th and one place above relegation. So let's see some planning for next season now so that we get a decent start. Then maybe our January loans can be for a promotion push instead. I don't see how playing Edwards and Yang helps us in that regard. [Post edited 7 Mar 7:27]

Another Old Pauline here, but #Nourryout hated every minute of being there. Vile place. |

yes, but one we have every chance of buying. Isn't that the key difference? In the team of loan players selected above in this thread, I believe the vast majority ended up being bought and even in Wells' case we probably had some sort of chance of buying him. I guess from the club's point of view we will never get another humdinger like Kyle Walker unless we do clubs like Spurs a favour now and again. |

Never any objection to loans that clearly have an intention to buy, like Austin and Johansen. I've always hated big boy loans as it smacks of us being small fry and kowtowing to clubs we used to regularly beat. But I know the Championship has changed and I expect nearly every promoted club has had successful loans recently. I just about got Edwards because of our centre back crisis. I do not enjoy the fact we are improving him now for Soton, or that Morrison is being denied minutes. Yang, unless as a result we get him for the whole of next season or some other Spurs striker starlet, I was against from the second it was mooted. Just the sort of loan I can't stand. Never going to sign. I know we all want to win games with the best possible side, but is it going to cause us to have yet another slow start next year because we've knocked our own players out of contention this? |

Agree, Dave, actually putting me off going to the away games or making sure I get there an hour early to claim seat. I really thing the club needs to do something about it. You buy a seat, you sit there. Sure, move about if you are not annoying anyone else, but don't shove people out of their paid for seats. Luton in particular was awful, and dangerous, I thought. |

Couldn't agree more, Ned. Absolutely hate loans where there is no possibility of signing them. I couldn't care less about Edwards and even more so Min-hyeok. I get the point about keeping Spurs onside, but Southampton? And what about keeping two players in Smyth and Morrison happy and improving, especially as they were pivotal to our improvement. Loans = club and manager cop out. |

Well said. Being in a QPR away end and hearing a few morons singing "f off Les Ferdinand" made me curl up inside. In my view, these are the same people who regard lower league players who ran about like Bircham and Ainsworth as "legends" then spit in the face of the genius that was Les. Also oft-forgotten - he stayed at least one more year than he needed to, out of similar loyalty to the club as Eze I believe. So sad what has happened with him in regard to Rangers, I hope time can fix it. |

Great shout. Vile individual, totally crocked and useless, tarted about doing nothing then scores one header at Wimbledon and runs over cupping his ear. We still lost the game, you plonker. |

No way! Stunned by that, but great to hear. |

Was anyone on the QPR LIst (I think that was called) in the 90s? Involved debate....via email (!) on a private group. Think it later developed into some weird javascript chatroom or something. If memory serves, was moderated by Barbara something. I remember Dave Mc was on it. As an ignorant youth, with literally nothing else to do but follow Rangers home and away, I opined that it was great that the Port Vale 4-4 happened in front of the true fans and not the mini-gloryhunters who only turned up away for the big matches. I then got inundated with emails (quite rightly) from irate older fans who had jobs, responsibilities, families.....:-) Oops. |

Excellent finish tonight against Wrexham, good for him. He really does seem to be thriving. |

Oh well said and beautifully put. For no obvious reason, my personal bugbear with US vernacular is "back to back". No, fkcu off, it is consecutive. We put together CONSECUTIVE wins, not back to back. Never, ever used to hear this except in US golf in the 80s. |

Brilliant analysis of Eustace, thankyou. And thanks for the win prediction...just confirming staying home with the wife is the right thing to do :-) |

Agree with virtually every word. You would hope a solid finish will lead us to doing next season what we all thought what would happen this season. You would presume Nardi and Walsh are still here and that is solid enough keeping stock, with Salomon in the background. Up front, still think we lack a bit to be real top half contenders. Alfie and Rayan are the young guns and you would hope at least one will kick on nicely, Frey is a solid enough option. Don't hold out much hope for Celar, so I am sure we'll be looking for one more here. Midfield, finally I think we are in good shape. Varane I really hope will be great next season, Morgan has to avoid the second season syndrome, Sam is ever reliable. We'll lose Colback and Marti doesn't fancy EDB so perhaps one more needed. For invention and tricky wingers, Smyth, Chair, Saito (if we keep him), Dembele....no issues what that. Which leaves the defence as a major worry. We have to keep one of Dunne and Cook. Paal I think many can take or leave, Morrison should be good next season, JCS can't be relied on, so I don't see how we can lose both Dunne and Cook. Worst thing is we are unlikely to be starting next season with a reliable defence that has played together a lot. Doesn't usually lead to a flying start. But, as long as we have Marti, plenty of hope there. |

I so agree with this. Keeping posession wastes time, all the other rubbish just encourages more injury time. |

Being the wrong side of 50 I can't stand any of it and have absolutely no interest in > duels (tackling, in my day) > xG (sitters, gilt-edged chances, half chances) > low block (parking the bus) > high press (closing down) > expected saves (keeping 'em out) > completed passes (finding your man) and I have probably shown that by misunderstanding the above. But it has got me wondering, what would have some of our fab players and teams of the 80s and 90s looked like on a modern stats basis? I mean. what sort of xG would Gerry's side in its pomp have racked up? Always remember that game against Liverpool at home where we absolutely battered them, couldn't score and Rosenthal stole it in the last second? What would Super Ray's season pass completion rate have been? Assists? What would Macca's "duels" have looked like? Off the scale, surely. Or, on the other hand, Tony Roberts' expected saves, Steve Yates duels, etc etc. Can't AI go over the old matches? |
