Southampton And Tottenham Negotiating Player Plus Cash Swap Deal
Sunday, 23rd Jun 2024 19:05

The latest news on the transfer front is that Saints and Spurs are in negotiations to do a swap deal with a player going in either direction plus Southampton will receive a nbalancing payment in cash.

The two players in question are Joe Rodon who spent last season on loan from Spurs at Leeds United and played against Saints at Wembley and Carlos Alcaraz who played the first half of the season in the Championship before joining Juventus on loan.

tottenhamhotspurnews.com are reporting that the deal could be close, with Rodon valued at around £10 million and Alcaraz at £30 million.

This would mean that the Argentinian would join Spurs and in the other direction would come Rodon and £20 million, although it has been said in the past Saints have a £38 million transfer clause in Alcaraz's contract.

This would make sound business for Saints Charly Alcaraz has undoubted talent, but it won't flourish at a club like Southampton, he needs to be at a bigger club.

Rodon joined Spurs from Swansea in October 2020, but in his first two seasons could not break into the first team and after playing just 15 Premier League games, joined Rennes on loan in 2022. It was not a good time and he spent most of it on the bench, but last season he was a rock at the heart of the Leeds defence and now Spurs are looking to offload him for around the £11 million they originally paid.

The Welsh central defender has also played 44 times for Wales.

Disagree strongly (bigger club ???), we should welcome him back.

Seems good,if it happens

But I thinkSaints need to try and rehabilitate Alcaraz back into the team, if possible.
He clearly has talent, and we are going to need a lot more to survive at this level.

The price point we are buying at, everyone is going to be a bit of a punt, but in Alcaraz, we know we have a potential gem. I'd keep him, if he would stay- but I think thats really the issue- he probably wants out.

I like Alcaraz too, but I just get the feeling he isn't going to work at Souhtampton. I would happily take £30m for him - not sure about Rodon (but haven't watched him much).

I'm sure many supporters will disagree but for me this looks like a good deal all round. Alcaraz has loads of talent but isn't disciplined or mature enough to alter his game to suit RM's style of play. Whilst his flair and exuberance are a pleasure to watch it is also frustrating to see him lose possession in key areas.
Rodon offers almost the opposite in being a mature, steady influence less likely to give away possession. If we want to win games then Rodon is a better player to have in the squad.

I think highfield49 is probably right. But I'm concerned that we will have a lot of solid hard working championship players without the flair that Alcaraz brings to potentially win tight games.

Rodon just isn't good enough.

Sadly, would take the £30m for Alcaraz :-(

If Alcaraz needs to be at a bigger club, why would he be considering Spurs? I know a bit tongue in cheek, though Its not like they got into the Champions League. So other than a bigger pay packet, he's unlikely to get much more by way of experience, facilities and so on

If Tino Livramento was worth £35m, as a Right Back, its hard to see how Alcaraz as an up and coming Argentine International goal scoring CM can be worth anything less than that

Alcaraz is a genuine attacking talent, keep him at all costs.
