Spurs Name Their Price For Kyle Walker Peters ! Wednesday, 22nd Jan 2020 08:58 Saints have been reportably interested in Tottenham Hotspur right back Kyle Walker Peters for some time now, a loan deal was touted but it seems Spurs are willing to sell.
The rumour mill is saying that Tottenham Hotspur are willing to do a deal that would see Kyle Walker Peters leave the club on a permanent basis and that both Saints and Crystal Palace are interested in signing the right back.
The price quoted is £15 million and that seems reasonable given that Matt Targett fetched in £17 million in the summer when he joined Aston Villa.
However it should be noted that Walker Peters has very little actual experience at first team level, so far he has started only 9 Premier League games plus another 3 as sub with exactly the same total spread across the Cup competitions.
That is far less game time than Targett had for Saints or indeed out on loan and Jan Valery has more than that.
So at 22 Kyle Walker Peters is at a crossroads, his reputation is far more than his actual record of playing games, this season he has started 2 Premier League games one of which he was subbed off on the hour mark and this is his only league action.
So given that he broke into the Spurs team at 2 1/2 seasons ago you have to question why he has failed to add many other appearances to his name as he approaches 23 in April, whilst of course he has had competition for the right back spot he really should have played more.
So from this perspective £15 million looks a lot of money for a player who has yet to fulfill his potential or more pertinently actually been given many chances to do so given the number of games Spurs have played since his debut in all three cup competitions they have entered.
Whilst there can be no doubt that we need a right back with Cedric leaving at the end of the season or indeed this month if we could sign Walker Peters, it would be a big slap in the face for Yan Valery who a year ago looked to have a glittering career at St Mary's ahead of him, ironically enough one of Walker Peters starts was against Saints last season when we came back to win 2-1 a game in which Valery starred, something is amiss with Valery who this season seemed to fall out of favour quickly with Ralph Hasenhuttl and since then has made sporadic appearances and then apparently been ruled out by a succession of mystery injuries and virus's suggesting issues off the pitch rather than on it.
We will find out soon whether Saints are serious in the pursuit of the Spurs man or whether this is more of a stalking horse to deflect from our real transfer needs which lie in the centre of defence not to the sides.

So we sell Matt Targett for 17 million, and buy another Matt Targett for 15 million.

I think you're on the money, Nick. Why pay £15m for a squad player RB (if we look past the actual outcome of the dross signed by Ross Wilson)? Yes, Valery needs competition and a bit more focus but I think we'd go for a player with more games and look to put more of our budget into other positions. I bet Walker Peters goes to Palace and we pop up with a lower league option. Like the Forest RB I saw rumoured this morning. Levy happy to use us to get his price tag out there, whilst we're happy with the distraction

Typical Levy, sell big and buy low. No way player is worth that at this time. Think club would be silly to buy at that price

Keep Cedric and then we have Valery as well, don't need him.

Is Cedric actually leaving his recent interview seemed fairly ambiguous. Along the lines of 'at the the of my last interview my contract was due to end with no renewal having been offered, so I said I was leaving' He is in really good form at the moment and should still be able to perform at this level for a few years. Admittedly he is a bit short for a modern RB. A move would be his last payday though. If a new contract isn't signed soon I guess that means Cedric will go and we will be looking for a new RB. £15 million seems a lot for a Valery mk 2. However we seem to pay about that amount for players with potential to grow in value so this could be a goer.

I still think we should try and tie Cedric down to a new contract (2 or 3 years) he's still only 28 and arguably at his peak age for a player. Surely a new contract for someone performing well at the moment is better than spending £10/£15m that could be invested elsewhere? On another note, do we not have any other RB options from the U-23's that we could blood into the first team?

Keep Cedric he has been in really good form at the moment, just hope that was not a bad injury last night. I would sooner get in a good centre half.

Cedric is in good form as he is playing for a new deal. He has blown hot and cold for a while and TBH i think its a time for him to move on. We need players that are hungry to perform for saints not just themselves. He is probably on good wages and feeling like he needs a big last payday. We cant/wont offer him that. The guy from Forest seems like an option IF we can get get him reasonably .. we wont pay £15m. Maybe at the end of season when promotions are dealt with we can get a reasonable price?

£15m would be better spent on a holding midfielder.

Over several decades Spurs have sold us a series of "duds", whilst "cherry-picking" the likes of Chivers, Alderweireld and Wanyama from our squads. I've no doubt that the lad has some talent, but I can't believe that if Pochettino couldn't see something in him, he's not right and that he'd suddenly become better with Saints. IF Cedric leaves (unlikley now that he's injured)...then I'd get in someone with experience -even if it is at Championship level. I don't mind being wrong in my assessment , but £15 million is becoming a hoodoo price for Saints - maybe better to leave this one.
