And The Band Played On Saturday, 5th Dec 2015 11:03 Ugly Inside Co Founder Clive Foley asks whether the show of defiance by those Saints fans who stayed to the bitter end on Wednesday was a turning point or just a hollow gesture ?
If there was one positive thing to come out of The League Cup defeat it was the spirit of the fans who stayed to the bitter end. At four one there was a bit of a mass walkout and then when the fifth and sixth went in more followed. However those that stayed suddenly found their voices as "Oh When The Saints"', boomed out from The Northam and Kingsland North.
It was a show of defiance as if to say no matter how bad it gets we are going to stick by the team. In fact it reminded me of The Band on The Titanic who bravely played on as the ship sunk. I make no judgement of the fans that walked, you pay your money you take your choice. Yes it was a shocking defensive display and like many I felt kicked in the guts and the thought of a warm bar and decent pint was calling loud but its times like this when the team needs us more than ever. All that really matters is that all fans come together and give it some against Villa. Don't expect to win because they are at the bottom of the league as if I was in their shoes I'd be thinking this is our big chance. Saints fans can make the difference in lifting the team and putting an extra energy into our game. Lawrie Mac once said when they win in The North they dance in the street but when Southampton win you dance in your kitchens. Well its time to get out the kitchen and show your passion in the stadium. Is the ten minute non stop singing of "Oh when The Saints' at the end of the game just a gesture or is it a turning point that sees St Marys finally become intimidating for visiting teams?

Fair play to them. They deserve something to shout about. Hope it starts today.

One thing I would say Clive, I stayed until the 5th goal myself, then went. Like many a supporter and season ticket holder ( just behind Nick I. ), I don't live in Southampton, but Basingstoke. I had my sister with me,from Thatcham side of Newbury. Even going early,(which I probably would have done anyway, unless there was a pen. shot-out,) left me getting in after 11 p.m. Had I left at full time...add about an hour! That start time was down to T.V. coverage, nothing else. I have to think seriously about the Boxing day fixture as, if I have my sister going (I'm sure she will want to) means getting in at gone 11o'clock once more, plus sharing the road in & out of Southampton with Arsenal supporters! Bang goes Boxing evening!

We in the Itchen stayed solid to a man and woman. Some of us even applauded the players at the end. Look you, how many turned up to watch Saints on a cold Tuesday evening in December when we were relegated to League 1? Not a trick question - about 12,500 - or about the same number that stayed to the end on Wednesday. Tells you everything about our new loyal fanbase doesn't it?

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Crystal Palace Polls |
