Saints Finally Get Their Man
Saints Finally Get Their Man
Thursday, 11th Jul 2013 19:12

In one of the most on off transfers of recent times, well since Gaston Ramirez, Saints finally get their man.

Victor Wanyama was announced as a new Saints signing on Thursday evening for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £12.5 million pounds, the second signing of the summer he is an undoubted asset to the squad, however just where he will fit in and at whose expense is a debate for another day.

Able to play either as a central midfield player or as a central defender his versatility will be valuable to the team next season and it will be interesting to see whether he plays in midfield or in defence.

Hopefully he will live up to his billing and will hopefully alongside Dejan Lovren prove that Saints have finally started to get their transfer policy strategy together, ironically coming on the same day that Saints sold their last signing Vegard Forren back to his old club for a fee that although reportably not much less than what we paid for him, will almost certainly have cost the club over a million by the time that wages, signing on fees and agents fees are taken into account.

So welcome Victor Wanyama, its taken time and if you show the form that the supporters hope that you will, then the traumas of this transfer and the on off nature of it will soon be forgotten.

I for one am pleased as a business colleague of mine is an ex Celtic player and he says he is not worth £12m (but thanks anyway) but if SFC get hold of him in the same manner as SRL (he loves SRL) Wanyama will be a top EPL player for us.

Last season defensive mid field was indeed a problem, the guard dogs too often off chasing rabbits. MP reorganized them into a better unit but non had that "presence" that some players have like David Luiz or even Lambert has. This guy seems to have it from what the little I've seen. Congratulations to Reed, Cortese and the team -you've pulled off a real coup.

This article demonstrates you know nothing atall of wanyama. The guy would be completely wasted at centre-back and will completely dominate midfields this season. Morgan, cork and victor at the base of a 5 man midfield with two wide-men and 1 up top. Good strength in depth with davis and jwp able to slot in.
I believe there will be one more midfielder joining also shortly, together with a CB and a striker. Expect to see a 21 year old argentinian right-back join soon too.

The Forren transfer is very baffling. I can't understand why he wasn't even given a run out when we had secured safety, against Stoke perhaps? I wonder whether there was a trigger in payments once he had made a first team appaerance.

If we have bought a midfielder to play centre back i am very concerned.

Not suggesting we should have kept Chaplow - really wish the bloke all the best - but if Wanyama brings Chaplow's level of commitment to go with his alleged ability he should be quite a player. Good luck RC you did us proud.

A few million here, a few million there, a million or so wasted on a player that doesn't play - easy come, easy go - life in the premier league. Clearly we are rolling in it. I could never relate to the premier league and I am increasingly unable to relate to the club I have always supported. Watch as the seats fill with even more fans who go to watch a game and highly paid stars but not necessarily to support Southampton and the atmosphere increasingly at home games is limited to the small noisy band of supporters in the away corner - as happened in the season just passed.

I'm apprehensive with regards Luke Shaw. Today he was supposed to sign his professional contract :S
