I was aged 14 and spent the whole afternoon chopping up firewood for my pensioner next door neighbour hoping that my good deed would be rewarded by a result at Maine Road. I would be happy to do the same again today for a similar result. Whenever "The Saints Greatest" are listed Derek Reeves is never mentioned, despite scoring a record 39 goals in the 1959/60 season helped, of course by two terrific wingers - Paine and Sydenham. He also has the honour of scoring all 5 goals against Leeds in a game at the Dell where the floodlights failed several times. Imo the team that played at Maine Road was the most exciting the Saints have ever fielded despite coming down with a bump against Watford in the next round.
When he arrived at the Dell he was a forceful dominant goalkeeper who had full control of his area. He was very popular with the crowd. A very sad end to his Saints career.
IMO he is most like Kevin Keegan. He creates his own chances from tight spaces inside the box, make opportunities for others and works hard for 90 minutes.
I understand SFC had an agreement with Celtic but Forster was not happy. Clearly he wasn’t prepared to give up his current very rewarding contract. Nothing to do with “fighting for his placeâ€.
George O'Brien was one of our most influential players ever. A superb penalty box man. Tough and in the same mould as Jimmy Greaves. Kept out of the Scotland team by Dennis Law.
The problems are not confined to the pitch. There have been too many dismissals and resignations of non playing staff. It is very unlikely that we can change the manager because we have no money and nobody on the Board at the club has any knowledge or experience of football. We are in a mess from top to bottom. This can only end one way.
