Guess the goal from the commentary transcript
at 19:20 31 Oct 2024

Maradona’s second in the 86 quarter final. Same commentator who gave us “And the Leeds fan are going mad, and they have every right to go mad”… Barry Davies.

In the playground of the broken hearts

On that subject, I heard about an Australian singer who had a few hits as a novelty act called William Shakespeare. He had been leading a band but a producer asked him if he wanted to moonlight in a pub rock band half his life or did he want to be a star? WS had a couple of number 1s in the 70s before some unsavoury facts came out about his pursuit of under age girls. The titles of hits were a bit of a giveaway in hindsight, the other one was called “My Little Angel”.

He ended up sleeping rough in a hut at a bowls club before drinking himself to death. Still, he outlived his replacement in the band who died in a similar fashion but with a different status. Fella called Bon Scott.

History nerds might enjoy “Subject to Change”. Russell Hogg, who I believe is a lawyer not an historian, interviews writers about their books, including some big names like Frank Dikötter and David Grann as well as others as obscure as their topics. His interests overlap very nicely with mine, doomed explorers, strange religion and lots of Byzantium!

As earwax is impossible to keep out of the crannies, I don’t think anyone would appreciate the gift of a second hand pair.

A favourite of Coppola, she was in some great films like The Conversation.

Cheap no names have always failed me within a year, though times change. My Sony WF-500 airbuds don’t have noise cancelling, but they’re great for podcasts walking, running and in the gym and have lasted me about three years now without showing any signs of the battery life waning. About £40 now they have been succeeded by a newer model.

Marti might say he was trying to boost his confidence by keeping him on, but it struck me as self-destructive stubbornness. Anyone can have a bad day, but the coach has to correct his own error by taking him out.

I was scorer in a cricket match with two brothers called De’Ath. One was known as Slow De’Ath, the other Sudden De’Ath.

Just finished Series 2 of Pachinko, thank god. It’s beautifully made but it’s so slow, and the 1980s storylines are so much duller than the older stuff. The “Japanese are complete bustards, the Koreans are a great bunch of lads” mantra is starting to wear a bit thin.

Teams from before football began
at 12:19 12 Oct 2024

I went to see Everton at Oxford's Manor Ground in the penultimate game of the following season. I was in the away end with an Everton fanatic, and I was longing for them to relegate Oxford after something that definitely didn't happen a few weeks before. Everton were leading the league, but Liverpool were a point behind, they just needed to beat a team in the bottom 3 to wrap up a second consecutive league title with a comfy home game at the weekend. Naturally they battered Oxford all night but Lineker missed a load of chances and Les Phillips smashed in the winner from the edge of the area with about a minute to go. I remember being a little surprised that the league leaders had only half filled a tiddly away pen and that even before the goal they spent the whole game slagging off their own players, especially Gary Stevens ("shag-happy tvvat" among the nicest things they called him). If only they had known that the team had one more title in them (the following season), they might have been more appreciative!

We like an honest trier round here, so let's hear it for Abrar Ahmed of Pakistan. On a pitch designed to have bowlers waking up screaming in their sleep decades later, he has figures of 31-0-155-0, and for his current spell 22-0-87-0.

Forever in his debt. Never mind scoring the winner in the World Cup Final, this has to be his career highlight.

From the TV thread…

Four Kings (Amazon Prime) steals the title of the book about Duran, Sugar Ray, Hearns and Hagler for a series about black British champs Bruno, Benn, Lewis and Eubank. It’s great nostalgia, but I’m surprised how much they show of the Watson and McClennan fights, the first I saw on TV at the time, the second I’d never seen a second of. The interviews are great: Lewis is a smug prick, but fair enough with knobs on considering what he did and still has, Bruno and Benn are doing a fair job of doing it tough, and Eubank…is still Eubank, I’m delighted to report (fingers crossed).
