| News Comment | Southampton At Bournemouth The Verdict at 10:01:48
I do wonder what happens in training between matches. And also what happens with scouting. I think Sports Republic are the problem as much as Martin. Maybe working at Staplewood is like being in an episode of The Office. Cornet and the Chelsea loan player are both carthorses without a first touch. The same has to be said for Diaz. He needs six yards to turn with the ball. One reason why the defence passed between themselves was because they could not see an outlet and knew that a clearance would just come straight back at them. The team had no shape in the first half. Poor Sugorama (sp?). He looked like the new Ivan Golac at the start of the season and now he has been reduced to doubting himself and his team mates. As Australians would say, we are a sh#tshow and Bournemouth outclass in every way, bar their stadium. Brighton are stellar by comparison. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Leeds United The Verdict at 10:36:44
Is it true that Leeds fans stayed to the end and afterwards to cheer on their team despite successive home defeats and the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion? According to Nick, saints fans didn't do the same last week? I am which set of fans deserve promotion more? Which set of fans feel entitled? |

Thank you SaintEPW for reminding us what's involved. Could i add a fifth point? The fifth one is that the other clubs are all scouting us every week picking at individual and team weaknesses. And those other teams arrange their tactics accordingly. We then have to evolve again to cope. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Watford The FA Cup Preview at 11:13:56
What a lovely article. And a lovely reference to Voltaire. Perhaps the lesser importance of the FA Cup resulted in more meditative writing... |
| News Comment | Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict at 12:13:16
Am I wrong, or has Che Adams suddenly turned into a two footed striker? I can't remember him shooting with his left foot before this current run let alone scoring. Now he's scored three in a row with his left foot. I guess he may have had some very focused coaching on that standing leg. Well done to the coaches for making him and enabling him to change his ways. Put me right if I am wrong. COYS. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Millwall The Verdict at 12:38:56
All good stuff. I just want to mention something disappointing. For all the talk about Southampton being a great club for developing players, there was only one home grown player in the entire match day squad. And that was Smallbone. I thought it worth mentioning as this is is an aspect that still matters to some fans. This season it was also disappointing to sell Tella leave as soon as he started fulfilling his potential after years of patient support from the club and its fans. These stories help make a club to be something special rather than just another business. I know that this problem is part of a trend that has been going on since football became big business. And there will be other fans that probably don't see this as a priority. But, it deserves a mention. After all, it does render match results less meaningful for anyone with a connection to the city. I hope recent changes under the new owners can get that conveyor belt going again. Other wise, I think indifference will spread. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Bournemouth The Verdict at 18:26:57
I remember from the start of this season, numerous references on here to us having 'a better squad than last season'. Now we know that the squad was even worse than last season. This is quite a feat given how much was spent. Perhaps only Forest did worse with their spending. The wretched state of our squad and also the feeder teams that produced zero players for at least five years running, is only disguised by how poor the neighbouring teams are. We have an appallingly low number of points. The occasional flash in a pan during the season does not disguise the inadequacy of the playing and coaching squad. Football is about winning or at least not losing. Maybe partly what has got us here is the idea that somehow Saints are special. That somehow we are always just one or two jigsaw pieces away from being in the top ten. And that we took our 'eye off the ball' which is literally the next match and the next team that has to be played. The truth is we are only special to Southampton fans. We may in the past have been pioneers but other clubs have copied what we did and some have over taken us. Look at Brighton which is actually owned by a fan who is a world class professional gamber. When I read that we are only two players off being a good team, I am only reminded that love is blind. Here's to an injection of some experience and common sense into our poor club. Cheers |
| News Comment | Saints Have To Storm The Palace On Saturday at 11:10:09
As football fans we tend to be hopeful. Looking at the facts, Palace is a team that scored 5 away from home against a resurgent Leeds. Stopping them from scoring is going to be tough for a team like ours. And with the need to protect our defence trying to score will be even harder. Let's hope some magic is in the offing. It's now or never... |
| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester City The Verdict at 12:25:20
Re our team each of the three parts are poor. Defence, midfield and attack. And they don't fit together. So the whole is less than the sum of the parts. Although I have to say I thought that at least on TV, Bazunu looked good. We don't have a physical hard edge aside from maybe 3 players. We don't have a goal poacher. Our defenders and midfielders can't score from our corners or free kicks. And our goal threat is so poor that in the last part of the match city were camped in the last quarter of the pitch. Last but not least, at any level a football team needs 2 or 3 star players and aside from WPs free kicks and the other WPs dribbling, we have none. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester City The Verdict at 12:12:07
Hear hear, you're spot on about City fans. That's why they are called Citizens. I've got friends from their time in the third division that set up a twinning with Torino fans who live in the shadow of Juventus. And you are spot on to ask what would be a step too far for Saints in terms of ownership. The elite that run football at the highest level are careful most of the time not to go too fast with commercialisation so it's a continuous series of small steps. So, I suspect most fans will just suck it up. It might take a major global event that would end globalisation as we know it, to enforce a change. This has already started with China shutting down on Chinese owners of foreign clubs. In the meantime, who will be allowed by the Premier League to buy Manu? |
| News Comment | Southampton Likely To Move Quickly To Replace Jones at 10:27:22
Our owners are very stats oriented and they will focus on the fact we have 48 points to go for in 16 games. And we are only 4 points off safety. This is thanks to the World Cup break. The right manager with the new squad which everyone in football agrees has a good number of quality players would save the club from relegation. So, I think any talk of preparing for the championship is off the mark. The owners should go for a manager who can actually set up a team for each of the next 16 matches with whatever tactics are required. Including changing the our shape and making substitutions mid game as we are accustomed to under Koeman. Maybe they will appoint a foreign manager as the new boss that Selles can work with. If Saints appoint one dimensional Marche we deserve they deserve to go down. |
| News Comment | Southampton Likely To Move Quickly To Replace Jones at 10:20:19
Jesse March is maybe too one dimensional. I think we need a good tactician as many of our remaining games are against the top teams and we need to be able to put a team out that can pinch draws and wins rather than gloriously lose 4-3 like Blackpool did when they came up. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Newcastle United The Verdict at 11:54:15
Maybe we should have gone to a 3-5-2 formation after their second goal. It might have solved many of thr issues mentioned here including problems on the wings in both defence and attack. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester United The Verdict at 14:35:24
Pundits reselling our players is just more click bait to keep the wheels of the gravy train turning. And a good chunk of fans leap on this lazy content because they are either juveniles or of juvenile mind, wishing their own club to spend with gay abandon. That's enough metaphors. Ed. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester United The Verdict at 13:37:57
Just to put this match in perspective, United's salary spend for this season is estimated to be just over a quarter of a billion pounds. Saints' salary spend is just under £44 million. Nuffsaid. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict at 06:43:24
Hear, hear. Just want to add that Perraut with his puffed chest, strength, buccaneering runs and piledriver shot, reminds me of one of our greats from the 70s... Ivan Golac. |
| News Comment | Wonderkid's Father Hints Southampton Deal Imminent at 15:51:51
Cheers PaleRider. We are planning on the next table being for La Liga Primera. It makes sense to put the Championship on the list too. Thanks for the suggestion. We are also planning on doing a weekly results list with the ratio for salary next to the score. This gives us fans another angle to digest what really happened in a game. |
