| News Comment | Southampton V Plymouth Argyle The Verdict at 08:58:27
Another great performance by saints.. totally dominated. Plymouth had zero interest in pressing the ball high up the pitch.. They played very defensively the back line was very high so it was great to see us trying to play long passes out to the wings and balls over the top. It would have been nice to have seen a few more goals and be more comfortable but I think we have to get used to teams turning up at st Mary’s and parking the bus now!! Top performances all round Charly was excellent always gets the ball turns and drives forwad, which creates chances. Defence was solid THB looks some player. It’s a weird felling heading into the stadium and expecting to win… what a difference a year makes… roll on 2024. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Blackburn Rovers The Verdict at 12:19:43
I thought this was a top performance from saints. Blackburn will come and have a go was the indication, they will go for the win… that never looked likely from minute one we pressed and push forward all the time. I would love to see the average positioning of our two center backs.. I reckon the majority would have been in the Blackburn half. Sometimes fans are just never happy. Sure the goals came late but we had 22 shots and 15 corners I think… complete domination. Let’s enjoy the good quality football as it’s been a while since we have seen that at st Mary’s! Finally flynn got subbed because he missed the last two games and had a yellow card. Makes sense to use the squad when you are comfortable in a game. Plus Fraser and Mara in particular had a great impact. Keep this unbeaten run going and the teams above will feel the pressure. |

Completely agree with hythepeer. I went to the game and whilst we weren’t exceptional the team created plenty of chances. Armstrong hit the bar, could have had a pen, Aribo shot just over was in the second half, loads of corners.. one cleared off the line I think. Sometimes the ball is slow to shift forward so there does need to be some work put into runs and quick balls forward. The benefit would be keeping the opposition guessing at the moment they know exactly what we are going to do. I also liked the way both teams were going for the win at the end. Finally the playing out from the back is amazing… so much pressure but all the players are calm. It’s scary but fantastic to watch. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Queens Park Rangers The Verdict at 15:15:17
Enjoyed the game yesterday. Yes we were a little lucky in the end but passing style and possession based football is certainly a better watch than the disaster that was Jones! I remember when we played forest and did not have much of the ball or a shot on target!! We will have to get used to teams playing like QPR, so many players behind the ball and five at the back. They did not even want the ball. Other than a spell directly after half time there only strategy was hit it long.. Special shout out for Adam Armstrong who was immense.. not only his goal but his pressing and chasing back is something to behold… and to Charles who looked so clam in both positions. Also thought downes looked good and composed… The off the field transfer mess definitely does not help. Perhaps an idea for sport republic now you have generated over £150m in transfers and spent just £10m, now is the time to stop putting price tags on our players and say no more sales.. only incoming players from now on! (surely the books are balanced for at least a year!). |
| News Comment | Southampton Confirm Departure Of James Ward Prowse at 10:34:31
As you say a sad day for saints fans… What a legend though, he rescued us on multiple occasions. I will always remember watching saints and the anticipation that came with every free kick around the box… everyone knew what was going to happen even the keeper and a lot of them could not stop it! The best of the lot I watched live at wolves last year. There was no way he was going to score from there! What a goal. Even had some of the wolves fans applauding!! I feel privileged to have watched JWP play for all these years.. I also think he will do well at West Ham, with less defensive responsibility. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Norwich City The Verdict at 13:08:22
Only watched highlights of the game but after seeing the first two games of the season there is a common theme with the goals we are conceding. Our team are set up with the zonal marking which is leaving players completely unmarked … You can add as many quality central defenders as you like if they are told to play that way a decent ball will always result in a chance. This has to be a coaching approach. Got to change to man marking and at least challenging for the ball. There were lots of chance and goals at gillingham where either the player was unmarked or just match up players incorrectly in height… Surely RM and team can see this? On the plus side the attacking play is something else creating lots of chances we will score some big totals against teams this season. |
| News Comment | Saints Sign Luton Defender But It Is Not The Signing The Fans Want at 12:08:59
This signing makes no sense. Firstly Nathan Jones said in a recent press conference right back was not a priority. Secondly him covering at Center back is just not needed, with JB back and ABK returning from injury we have five center backs! If the argument is we need cover based on the delayed return of tino I don’t get that either. They have just given Lewis Payne and extended contract… signing this chap from Luton just blocks his way to the first team.. we are going to have a lot of youngsters with amazing potential looking for other clubs soon. And last but not least we have needed a quality sticker for the last 3 transfer windows and looks like stretching into a fourth!! but the club have failed to bring one in… why waste time and money on utility players we don’t need. |
