Wasn't just for athletics.Hosted Speedway and greyhounds. You could get a really decent atmos with only about 5,000 in there, great acoustics. And you could watch R's getting laced up midweek whilst munching on steak 'n chips up in the restaurant.
I think the whole site, old stadium too, became available for about the same price of our then record signing.
A lot of money in perspective but why oh why was it not done? Land is land is land. Close to central London, on the A40 etc etc, what's not to like? Same mistake by not buying the land behind the school end when it became available at a good price. Though it does now serve a good purpose.

"The team was involved in a failed attempt in the 1924—25 season to play Austria's first night game on a field lit by torches and flares, and playing with a ball covered in lime to make it more visible" Those was the days

Strange, I never heard of them and they still exist. Mind you their history is no more remarkable than our very own in terms of winning trophies. One of those clubs that just muddles along week in week out.
There aint half been some clever bastards.

Despite my crappy username (I had a bee in my bonnet and needed to register quickly while still angry/laughing/can't remember) I actually only saw QPR once at White City. The players were little figures in the distance and, for that matter, so were the other spectators. My memory is of a vast, dark, empty concrete canyon.
Then again, I got a buzz seeing it in a seventies Steptoe and Son film on tv a few months ago.

At the time when First Vienna were champions (1931 and 1933), the Austrian national team was one of the best teams in the world, and one of the favourites for the 1934 World Cup: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wunderteam

That's true,it was a vast canyon of a place, but they gave you cushions to park your arse on the cold, cold concrete terracing.

Ahhhh well I never.
Would be great to be in both 'flesh' and 'flash'
Did you know Blob, Brian Blessed Won a Metal Hammer award this year! Talking of 'flash'.
Yeah?Brian Blessed is brilliant and well worth the award - great OTT performances.....the one I remember was in Blackadder 1 where he launches into a speech about "I ride at once to rebellious Stoke, where I will bare my broad backside and say I Value You Most Highly",throws his scabbard to the floor after unsheathing the sword and nearly knocks over some old biddy extra sitting behind.Should get a knighthood - well deserved.
I didn't think I ever contributed to an appeal, I remember one with milk bottle tops and Landrovers or something.
I did however do a sponsored swim to help our swimmers to Auckland 1990 Had my pic done with one (not Sharron davies) the sort of plainer 'other' one we had. (I think we only had two or 3 decent ones back then)

Tell you who also was a bit of a goer,Katie "'allo Luxembourg" Boyle.
My claim to fame is, I ran the mile at White City and also did the triple jump, among other stuff. I did all this while a schoolboy at Christopher Wren and Lillian Board, what a stunner, presented the prizes to the winners.
I also watched France v Uruguay at the '66 World Cup there, plus various R's games, so all in all the White City has quite a history for moi !!
