In all those games he has looked like scoring just twice, last night he had 31 minutes on the pitch including injury time, he did not do anything that suggested he should start a game

Similar to Adam Armstrong really..no real threat at the top level, neither our prem players.
Still no start for Onuacho on 08:34 - Oct 30 with 992 views | saintwizzler | I don’t think any striker will succeed with this style of play at the level we play at. Archer was none existent last night. 6 touches. No shots. He isn’t a player who plays with his back to goal. Che Adams was. He’s not been replaced. It took a reserve Right Back who was playing at Left Back who ‘dared’ to actually have a shot from outside the area to save our blushes against a Stoke Reserve side starting with two 17 year olds. Onuachu cannot play in this system. He needs balls in the box. We do not do this.

If you don’t get the ball into areas which create opportunities then no striker is going to score. We seem to have a phobia about early crosses into the box. Everyone sees it apart from Martin.

Yes but just like last night Nick the delivery to him from the wide men has been non existent. You could see his frustration last night. He was getting into the type of goal scoring positions that are alien to Archer and Brereton Diaz but the ball never came in. It was being played horizontally across the pitch to get our possession stats up He’s a proven scorer and this was exactly the game to start him What was the point in starting Armstrong. We know he can score at Championship level and can’t score at Premier League level already As for Archer, Sky showed his touch map. I think when he went off he’d had 5 touches against a championship relegation threatened side full of fringe players when we had a high possession percentage. That is absolutely inexcusable and we have to try an alternative or we’re relegated. He’s proven this season and at Sheffield Utd and Villa that he just isn’t good enough in the PL The problem is Onuachu doesn’t fit into our style of trying to score the perfect goal by walking the ball into the net

You are quite right the amount of possession that we have and the number of touches that we had in the Stoke box was appalling Archer only having 5 touches showed how we failed to get the ball into the box for him or with the chance of getting into the box. I don't think Onuachu got into many scoring positions other than being in the box, the one chance he did have was a header that he put about 10 yards wide, it wasn't an easy chance but he should have done a bit better. Armstrong has scored in the Premier League, but I agree he is not going to be a 10 goal a season man at that level, however he can play a part with his hard work. You make the excuse for Onuachu that he was getting no service, but that was the same for both Archer and Armstrong. Onuachu is a wild card, he can score in Belgium or Turkey, but the overall standard is a couple of teams aside in both leagues worse than the Championship. He has had his chances to show he can score both 2 seasons ago and now, but he has yet to really do anything that warrants playing him. Onuachu getting game time shows that Russell Martin is clutching at straws, as has been pointed out his style doesn't suit our game under Martin, it just highlights that his tactics arent working

Armstrong had two decent chances that he fluffed. The first one he should of been crossing to give Archer a tap in. Hes just not good enough at this level and his record screams this out. Onuachu was berating one of the wingers for the poor quality crosses that were being put in.

Armstrong is a schoolboy footballer. He never looks up when he's got the ball, he's totally unaware of what's going on around him, he just runs in straight lines making it so easy to defend against him. When he does get a shooting chance he snatches at it wildly in a hit & hope fashion. Yes he's scored plenty in Championship but will never cut it I Premier lge. As for Archer & Onuachu & there lack of touches, I feel for them because we just dont get the ball into the box, we play everything across the face of the box, even Haaland wouldn't get any touches or score playing for us.

Yes he was giving Cornet a complete roasting. You could clearly see him saying he wanted the crosses whipped in The only crosses he got were floated crosses which gave him no chance just like the Armstrong cross against Man City. Those types of crosses are really difficult to generate any power with particularly as with last night where the two crosses he did get were even too high for him

I disagree with some of your points Nick. I don’t think Archergot into goal scoring positions. There were a few good low crosses from Sugawara and Fernandez I think where Archer hadn’t anticipated and was yards back rather than being in the kill zone so to speak which is where Tall Paul positioned himself but the ball never came. You’re saying Archer’s lack of touches was because of the delivery but Onuachu had far more touches in the 20 odd minutes he was on I’m not saying Onuachu is the answer, I’m saying Archer, Armstrong and Brereton-Diaz aren’t

We need to get behind the opposition & pull the ball back so that our strikers are facing the goal, NOT loft it in diagonally, those sort of balls don't give our strikers any chance because they are receiving the ball with their back to goal. It's basic stuff guys, keep it simple.

Hi Matt,Onuachu when he came on sent Stoke into panic mode, defenders(and defending is what they spent most of their time doing) do not like a big man in their goal area. You could see he was getting frustrated at the quality of crosses. I also don't say Onuachu is the answer but if you play him play to his strengths. Nick saying he started 4 games wow! how many were together? Hes used as a miracle sub brought on when things have gone wrong late in games and expected to wave a magic wand and score . Hes played under 3 poor managers. How many players form has gone backwards, the problem we have is off the pitch not on it. [Post edited 30 Oct 11:16]

Hi Grumps, hope you’re well. Totally agree. I think we have to give him a run of games. The odd start or sub appearance here or there is not going to work If you look at his goals he actually scores more with his feet than his head and he has some good skill for a big man but if you look at his goals you also realise he got much better delivery than he has had at Saints I’m not sure what the answer is but I’m convinced it ain’t Archer or BBD

This is true, and when we do get the ball into him it balloons off his head into space. But it is also true his height scares defenders. Paul with an Archer* could bamboozle the opposition. *I mean Cameron Archer not a Robin Hood type figure. [Post edited 30 Oct 13:48]

'balloons off his head into space' So he has to bury in the net any crosses sent to him,is this a joke? Name me Centre Forward who scores with every cross sent to them? I watched him come on last night and you could see his frustration at the few crosses that were sent into the box, most of the time he was watching the ball going sideways in front of him. Onuacho may or may be the answer to our woes but don't blame or ridicule him when we play the way we do.
