The Committee didn't clarify whether the full (as in if occupied) cost of hotel rooms in the 5000 bed buffer is being paid by the Home Office, or if a reduced rate is available to ensure the availability of rooms should they be needed. Either way this shows why that Home Office overspend existed. What strikes me though that politicians on all sides appear concerned to ensure that these buffer beds are good quality hotel beds, rather than beds in accommodation barges or military camps. So the overspend is criticized, but at the same time there is pressure to incur that expenditure

This 5,000 additional bed capacity has been in existence for some time, since at least June 2023 when the Home Office confirmed the arrangement. The rationale behind the additional rooms was because it was impossible to predict how many arrivals there could be, for example in one 3 day period there were over 1700 arrivals. The Home Office were also accommodating another 50,000 in hotels. I’d imagine those hotels are sitting empty, it would be pretty difficult for hotels to cancel legitimate bookings at the drop of a hat to accommodate “new guests” - but I could be wrong - it wouldn’t be surprised.
