70s discos and clubs 11:42 - Mar 3 with 15505 viewsdmm

I worked in discos and clubs in the 70s and wondered if anyone knew of these three venues, all long gone of course.

Thursdays, a disco on Kensington High Street.

Maximus, a disco in Leicester Square.

No Noise, a 'blues' club on Ladbroke Grove. I didn't work there but would sometimes end up there after finishing work at 3am.

I think it’s now called The Red Room but was Club Azur before that.

Club AreYouSure aka The Dungeon…… oh my life what a place. Too many memories of that gaff!!!

Did you used to get in Bar Salsol that we all christened The Sausage Bar? Thank Christ there was never an emergency in there, place was a death trap. I DJ’d in there twice and nearly got the gig as the regular but sadly never happened

How about the So Bar in Richmond? Cracking gaff. Also went Park Avenue a bit back in the day, not bad at all.

Loads to go on about. So sad that clubbing and venues in shorter and shorter supply for da yoof these days

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Went to a club called Circles , vague memories, might’ve been Stanmore, Kingsbury🤷🏻‍♂️

Honeypot Lane?

Queensbury really, big old estate pub, long gone.

Came unstuck there once. Bit of an unsuccessful Wembley take over.

Poll: Thank God The Seaons Over.

Boston,
Depending on your age it was probably the one called Baileys or Paradise Lost or Qudos (and has since had dozens of further name changes).....

It was Baileys.

Wardour Mews anyone?

Heavy Dub.

Cans / tinned beer.

Drugs

Through the back door, down the alley into the 24 hour 'diner' when the Old Bill raided.

Poll: Thank God The Seaons Over.

Anyone remember a small club in Ealing. Just opposite Ealing Broadway station. A stairway down to the entrance, next to an estate agents. Must of been early 80's. Might still be there, though I doubt it.

I think that was Madocs or something like that?

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Only clubs I’ve ever known in Kensington High Street were The Park or The Roof Gardens (unless you want to include “our Terry’s” gaff in Squires!!!)
The Park was a good gaff early 90’s…. MattyB a regular and I went to the attempts to re-launch Shoom…. Sadly it never really took off.

Maximus was on the Hippodrome side of the square IIRC? Love Ranch there plus also a night called Spank???? A gaff where anything went and quite a few trannies used to get in there - quality music and quite a laugh.

Ladbroke Grove one means nothing to me but if it was blues then not one that would be on my radar.
Why do they sing the first line of any blues track twice?
I said, why do they sing the first line of any blues track twice?

No Noise was a West Indian after hours 'blues' club - reggae, dope and curried chicken. I once saw Malcolm Allison in there completely off his head.

No idea why they called it a blues club. Rupie Edwards 'Ire Feelings' was on the decks all the time.

The Burlington in Chiswick / Hammersmith Grove area.

Basement club.
Fella called Brian (?) on the door.
Fairly edgy gaff, low ceilings and very dark. Loads of reggae, house, soul and plenty of the Mary Jane in the area with “other stuff” going on.
Always a good few QPR in there so some may remember it

How about Le Dodo in Ealing Broadway?

Tony Roberts and Darren Peacock had to be separated outside there one night after they had a fall out and started rucking with each other.

Often christened “Le Don’t Dont” it was a proper 70’s/80’s disco nightclub with mirrored walls, disco balls and chrome handrails. Plenty of shiney suits and pencil ties for ages until
It got totally left behind early 90’s. Then became The Priory for a long time which wasn’t too bad until they decided to allow rap and grime nights in there and the licence soon lost due to all the issues that come with that shoite.

Lblock talking of mirrored walls reminded me of a small after hours club just off Piccadilly Circus that was entirely walled by mirrors. I cannot remember its name. You could always tell people new to it as they'd be walking into walls all the time.

Loads of club staff went there after work and it had the classic dodgy entrance down a back alley. You knocked on the door, someone looked at you through a peephole and hopefully let you in.

Anyone remember Le Scandale Berwick street? Wall to wall mirrors.

I used to work for a DJ that had a night there.
The receptionist told me for School disco they had 800 in a club licensed for 200.

I was chatting to Louise when there was trouble inside, the bouncers told me to do the door aged 17 and I didn't work for the club! The mid 90's were so much fun.

Beer and Beef has made us what we are - The Prince Regent

So a few more from the 90's

Gardening Club - Covent Garden, did my 18th there with Jeremy Healy DJing

Milk Bar - Down the side street nest to Astoria Danny Rampling used to have a night their in the early nineties

Zatopeks - Warehouse (literally in the backend of Battersea

Iceni - 3 story club in Green Park / Mayfair

Mass / Bug Bar - Brixton, met my wife on the dance floor in the Bug Bar basement venue in St Stephens Church with Mass being the main upstairs venue

Cafe De Paris - Went to the opening night there a gay / mixed night called "Sex" one of the wildest parties I've ever been to, with people of all types just getting down everywhere, Jean-Paul Gaultier got kicked out for blazingly smoking weed, Naomi Campbell kicking off. Spent at least an hour (off my tits) sat around the table in the ladies loo (lets say the Gents was quite occupied) with a handful of the most stunning fashion models, including a pair of identical twins. I was 18! - Happy days

If we're going 90s then my regular jaunts out clubbing we're SW1 Club, Satellite club, Camden Palace, Bagleys, The Cross, Chunnel Club and Club UK .Leisure Lounge
First time out up in London I went to Cafe De Paris from my hazy memory it was very similar to SW1 Club in terms of layout and that old theatre decor. ?
The golden years for me spanned from 93 to 98. Regrettably missed the Acid House 88 era. Too young. After 98 either clubs changed a lot or I did .

Occasional providers of half decent House music.

The Sausage Bar............ I think the lady who owned it was called Nadia or something like that?

She had a NY party for the regulars once and it all got shutdown within a couple of hours as loads of gate crashers came in via the back entrance.

Park Avenue used to be a Thursday night jaunt for my lot.

The Haven was a great Thursday night as well, my mate DJ'd their a few times during the Rave period.

I just remembered Magnums Wine Bar in Richmond, that was a nice little venue.

More ‘my end’

Cinderellas in Kingston ( student night on a Monday)
Jackson’s in Staines
21s or Oliver’s in Egham
Pantiles in Bagshot ( now a care home)

When I was working in Camberley in the late 80s, one of my colleagues was a massive shark and was often to be found down at Pantiles. He needed to use a van for work purposes but apparently had a mattress in the back of it.

There was a nightclub near Aylesbury, The Rectory, which was located at a farm. Well, we were out in the shires, bloomin’ yokels that we are.

I was there one night when my mate said he was going to have to go and speak to one of the staff. We asked what was up and he said: “Erm, I just found this lying over there and I don’t think this establishment is the best place for it”.

It was an axe

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Yes, off that stretch of King Street between Hammersmith and Chiswick, opposite Ravenscourt Park, proper dodgy, think it was closed down after fella got stabbed to death in the toilets, how desperate were we to go to places like this just to get an extra hours drinking in!
