London Mayor Sadiq Khan 20:23 - Jun 10 with 31462 viewsDwightYorkeSuperstar

London mayor Sadiq Khan promised today that he will begin the process of pulling down ‘inappropriate’ statues around London — after Bristolians dumped the statue of slave trader Edward Colston in the river at the weekend.

To investigate London’s landmarks, Khan has created a ‘Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm’ which will review statues and street names in the capital to make sure they reflect the diversity of its people. Khan said he expected the commission to find that it’s ‘not appropriate to be memorialising, or to be celebrating’ certain figures, especially those with a racist past and links to the slave trade.

In 2018, he proudly unveiled a statue of the suffragist Millicent Fawcett — the first-ever statue in Parliament Square of a woman. At the time, Khan declared that ‘from the very first week of my Mayoralty, I supported Caroline Criado Perez’s campaign to put up a statue of a woman in Parliament Square, and I’m so proud that the day of its unveiling is now upon us.’

But while Fawcett is mostly celebrated today for the campaign for women’s suffrage, less well-known is her ardent support of the British Empire. Fawcett was such a fan of Empire, that in 1901 she was commissioned by the government to lead an investigation into British concentration camps in South Africa during the second Boer war, after high mortality rates and appalling conditions were reported there.

When she arrived, Fawcett thought the camps were deeply necessary for the war, and her eventual report said the commission had a ‘generally favourable’ view of them. She also suggested that many of the deaths were caused by the ‘unsanitary habits’ of the Boers. Around 28,000 Boers died in the camps.

Fawcett didn’t have much thought for the participation of Black Africans in society after the war either. In 1899, she wrote that after the settlement of the war;
‘I hope we are too deeply pledged to the principle of equal privileges for all white races to abandon it.’

Do you think Sadiq will include his pet project in the list of 'inappropriate' statues he intends to tear down? It begs the question as to whether he is engaging with this exercise simply to boost his personal popularity, considering he proudly unveiled such a statue himself less than two years ago.

The man is a colossal hypocrite.

If someone is pissed off because the statue was torn down in a display of public disorder I’m pretty certain that doesn’t make them racist.

Agreed. I genuinely wasn't implying that, but rather responding to the emboldenment of people like Stephen Yaxley Lennon and Farage. They're like flies to sh*t and no friends of any of us who think racism is unacceptable.

I was only talking about racists. Racists aren't the victim and I'm quite happy for them to be abused too (preferably locked up).

I'm very clear and happy to not be on the side of racists. They don't need to be considered, they don't need a voice and there should be no place for them.

There's no need or room for balance when it comes to racists.

Now this is why the argument is roo complicated for emotional, knee jerk responses, specially when projecting our values into the past.
Churchill was, at least I believe he was, a racist. How would the world look if he was denied his voice and removed from his place in time?

Now lets see, lets make up a scenario....right, someone comes up with a 100% effective vaccine and cure for Covid-19 but they are outed as a proper white power racist, do we refuse the discovery?
I know it's unlikley but what I'm trying to say is we always need balance. Wirhour balance, without a willingness to sometimes compromise we culd make things worse.

We can stop celebrating bigotry but that alone won't make it go away. If we concentrate instead on the future, on improving education and removing ignorance it will be a step in a better directiom. There is too much hate going around and to quote Angelou

" Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in this world, but it has not solved one yet"

I have made many mistakes with many more surely to come but I am 100% certain that every decision I made which was driven by hate turned out badly for me.

I am constantly having to revise/update/alter my opinions because new information is coming through all the time. It's the same for all of us. Take my recent comments about Anthony Joshua, it turns out I may well have been a tad previous. I've now seen a story where Barry Hearn presents a different angle, an angle that has me rethinking what I posted.
An opinion shouldn't be a fixed, immovable point. We all have much more to learn than we ever will.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I see Sadiq Khan has been stirring up trouble again on LBC today warning right wing extremists not to hijack this weekend's demonstrations. They are in fact ex-service offering to defend the cenotaph from the left wing anarchists.

The demonstrations have already been hijacked by the extreme left. It is time for Khan to go before he inflicts more damage on London.
As mayor he should be upholding the law and democracy not mob rule.

Nope.

He said that there would be far right demonstrators. Not that all demonstrators are far right.

Every Tommy Robinson demo to date has been packed with ex and current service men. They’ve also been packed with the far right. There is some overlap.

Does Khan believe in Ohlocracy? He who controls the mob...

Then again it depends on what he thinks of democracy, maybe he agrees with Thomas Jefferson,

“A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.”

I very much doubt Khan, or anyone else, knew anything about this woman's views on the British Empire. So, uninformed, maybe, but a hypocrite, no.

The Spectator is an unpleasant right wing pamphlet, staffed mostly, I imagine by ex-public schoolboys who are paid to grub about in the dirt desperately seeking some sh*t to smear in Khan's face.

This site has become unbelievable in the last few days - absolutely taken over by rancid threads and posts from right-w(h)ingers.

Ah my little shadow. I clearly think it did, and am certainly not the only one.

Now remind, me wasn’t there something in EU law about it being about how the victim feels

Always amazes me how people who pretend to find discrimination objectionable, are sometimes the ones who love to group and abuse people.

Similar to those who deemed black people stupid, lost in their own ignorance and perceived superiority

You seem to have been a little one sided in your repeated demands for all sides to be considered. One might almost think you not as balanced as you like to present yourself. Perhaps you need to analyse all down arrows.

What I'm seeing is posters like Cat have gently dipped their toe in, at the start of all this, then as the up arrows and favourable comments follow, they get more and more overt about their opinions.

Posts generally go along the lines of...

"It's awful what has happened to George Floyd.......BUT"
"I agree that slavery was wrong........BUT"
"I agree with the BLM protests..........BUT"

Edited because I've just seen it, I would expect nothing less from you. Why just you don't call me a racist and be done with it.

Maybe what you missed though is the 1% that have taken our rights away for decades are the rich and powerful? It wasn't a reference to BLM or those protesting in Bristol.

Like I've said, I hate all racism, wherever it comes from and whoever it's directed at but that's never enough for people like you.

Like I also keep saying, people will believe what they want to believe!

Edited agin just to say, at the end of all 3 of those statements would be "but I disagree with the violence"

You can’t say anything on here that’s true anymore for the likes of Humpty,Lisa etc to start calling you a racist or troll.
There was a video on here two weeks ago of a female, black, right wing Trump supporter saying that George Floyd once held a gun to a pregnant black womans stomach to keep her quiet whilst his chums ransacked her house.
She spoke the truth, the 100% truth and she got some incredible abuse for speaking that truth.
They were all kicking off here,Humpty was going radio rental even though he hadn’t even watched the video.
One poster across the pond even said she’s called an Aunt Jemima in America, apparently a dreadful racial slur.
But like I said she was speaking the truth the 100% truth.

A few weeks ago on Twitter I laughed at Diane Abbott saying Lebanon was in Europe. A poster off here replied to me saying “don’t be a racist.” and even when I asked him the following day why he was abusing Priti Patel he said “that’s different.”

It’s all a bit sad really with no balance anymore,I’ve said for years on here that I can’t work out this left v right bollox and I’m usually right.
It’s disgraceful what’s happening but some people just love to make it worse by stirring it up.
