It’s almost unbelievable , when considering the sh*t we’re now in that some of our fans what to sl@g off a very very good player who even now should still be plying his trade on a higher level than we are at present. It’s like looking at your battered Ford Focus and saying the Mercedes you used to own was crap.

He’s a decent goal scorer and with more able players quicker of thought and deed he’d have had a lot more goals for Swansea. He has a good goal scoring record pretty much wherever he’s been, except here. His days here commenced with the start of the Swans decline.

He made quick intelligent runs off the last defender. If the ball is played at the right time , he’s in on goal. He had an awful MF behind him . Rose tinted glasses? Perhaps you need new ones? The control in this experiment is how he fared at clubs with better midfielders- very well.

Against crap opposition most of the time. He could not live with the Prem. Yes he made the sort of runs all good strikers do and then he walked back and got caught offside when we continued to attack. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

7 of his 13 Premier League goals (from 36 starts) came against big 6 clubs. Career 0.45 goals per game mainly in Lique 1 with a couple of seasons in the PL and one in Turkey. Sh1t he wasn’t.

He scored 20+ goals in France the same season more French teams reached the latter stages of the Champions League than English ones. The "lesser opposition" stick was often used to beat him with but doesn't stand up to much scrutiny. Most people are quite right. He was a good striker wasted the way Monk wanted to play. We frequently used him as a targetman FFS.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

That’s a slightly misleading fact. It’s not the quality of the top three of four teams that matters as much as the other sixteen or seventeen when you’re looking at goals over a season. Scoring 20 goals in ligue 1 is not the equivalent of doing so in the PL. Having said that, we definitely didn’t play to his strengths. In fact for the few games we actually did, early in Monks first full season, he was quite prolific. His runs were quality and when he had Shelvey on the same wavelength as him threading long through balls, he often got on the end of them. With players who didn’t spot the chance as quickly as he did, he was often offside, when he’d actually made a very good run but the pass had come too slow. His finishing, on the whole, was pathetic, though he did score a few screamers and though he certainly wasn’t a target man, he had the physical attributes to make a much better fist of it than he did.

Best post on this thread. Gomis, through no fault of his own, is a focal point in our regression from the way we played and recruited to the shambles we became off the pitch and the run of the mill team we became on it. It’s what you get when you replace a series of forward thinking managers with Garry Monk.
