A lot will depend on where we are in January, if we make a mess of the games next month then we won't be signing the likes of Defoe as we'll have a new manager
Even if Arry is sacked, 'Uncle Tone' will still be chairman....
Defoe may turn out to be a pile of shite, or he may turn out to be signing of the season. But why risk it.
If we sign him (massive if because most transfer stories are shit) no one at QPR will have learned their lesson taught to us by Park, Bosingwa, SWP, Barton (yes, I said Barton), Ferdinand that QPR should not be a retirement home for overpaid has beens.
The only role I can see for Defoe is the impact sub, what Kevin Philips used to do.An expensive exercise though, rather like filling your bath with champagne. I hear Lukas Podolski is unsettled at Arse - would prefer a sneaky loan bid for him,if he doesn't get the nod against anderlecht tonight and scores of course.
Anybody care to tweet Tony with a link to this thread?

Find me on twitter @derbyhoop and now on Bluesky

Thus proving there are other options. Fancy being a scout for QPR Mr B ?
If only me and my poor older Brother could afford to go to teh game against Man City. We love QPR and Uncle Tony sooo much but there's just no way we can justify the cost what with having to feed our (QPR and Uncle Tone supporting) kids. If only there was some magical way we could get hold of two tickets...
My first reaction as I unfolded the ES on the Westbound platform tonight was.... FFS! But then I remembered I actually would've taken him all day ahead of Borini back in August... But the money! Fook me the money!!!
I expect him to be here on bundles Along with Andy Carroll And Crouch
And we'll burn in Hades for our sins
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

What's more likely to get a reaction: 1. Standard posting that we're interested in Defoe if he comes at a reasonable price 2. Standard posting that we're interested in Defoe for excessive-and-made up amount
#2 generates more sales, more clicks and more discussion. Truth has nothing to do with it.
Why don't we just sign a decent striker that we won't have to replace at the end of the season? They're all out there, you just have to go out and look for them. I'm sick to death of seeing stop gap signings with no sell on value draining the club of its foundations. I think Defoe used to be a decent player but we already have a couple of players who can do his job better.

If they're out there you can be damn sure somebody else has them on the radar or has signed them and farmed them out.Good thing about loans is the parent clubs often lose track and interest, vulnerable to a cheeky bid.Trouble is if you show an interest it reactivates the parent club attitude and the price goes up.Apropos that £9m for Vargas is a bargain, but maybe that was "yesterday's price" It's all a monumental gamble whatever you do.

I suspect the conversation goes something more like 'why should we scout and hunt around for players who may be no good when I kniw a lad, worked with him before, great eye for goal, we can buy?'

Defoe. Money aside is a great to fair addition as depth to our strikers..this same crowd vilified management for not getting a striker in august. Defoe can score goals in the prem. If Austin is ok, I doubt he starts.
On the flip side I agree that I might want a young hungry striker, but where is that guy? And can he score in the prem? Luckily Chaz has 5 and Vargas 2.....despite never having scored one at this level before.

West Ham,Southampton and Swansea have found these sorts and they're paying less than us. Its always a risk but so is signing a 32 year old suffering frequent injuries. Defoe is a good pro with a decent record however paying a substantial transfer fee and wages for a player who may not cut it for much longer is madness. Its all a gamble Blob but the sort of gambles we've taken have been so obviously doomed to failure. Loft 1979 i agree with what you say but at these prices there is far better value to be had. If we do sign him and his goals keep us up we will have to spend another fortune to replace him in 12 months. I just want to see us change our philosophy and start looking for rough diamonds who will improve us and expand the clubs assets.

Defoe. Cost of Defoe is not going to be the media price. For me, I bring in Bamford, but last year we saw what a crap shoot it is. Maiga, Kane and Doyle were clearly inferior to Chaz and BZ.

This isn't Defoe of 2010 you teary eyed fools! This will be the Defoe of 2015. He MAY still have something (recent injuries suggest not) but he may have nothing, in which case this is a very expensive exercise in stupidity.
How about we don't sign anyone unless we get an injury?? And if we do, have to sign someone, how about we follow the lease if our most successful recent signing (and all those great buys in the 80s and 90s) and go for someone from the leagues below. It worked fantastically with Charlie, why not try to replicate that?!
Rhodes Gestede Deeney Wood (not the league below....but!) Assombalonga
There's loads more.
Yes, they'll cost some capex up front, but their salaries will be half of £90k at most AND they may appreciate as an asset rather than completely depreciate (like Defoe, Crouch, etc).
Then there's the fact they're in form, have a career on an upward trajectory, have good fitness...it's a no brainer.
Disagree Antti, Defoe can still do a job for us , a partnership with Austin with vargas behind would be very good and would help us stay up if we are looking to sign a player who hasn't played Premier league/English Football in the January window its a gamble, a gamble which might not pay off , players like that need a pre season January transfers are quick fixes and that's what we need a striker who knows where the goal is and knows the league, going back to your point on Proven Rio is finished, and was a stupid signing I agree Park - only those behind the scenes, (fergie) and the player himself knew he was finished, the rest of us were saying it was a great signing Boswinga- I never rated and thought Meh when he signed Defoe was on the Bench as AVB thought Soldado was better he was on the bench when Arry was there as he played 1 upfront with Van der Vart behind Adebyour
Defoe is 32 , has never been a crock, he is deadly in the 6 yard box, and we need options I love Austin as a player and think he will go on to be a great player but if you gave that chance when he was 1 on 1 with the Liverpool keeper a couple of weeks back I reckon Defoe would have scored and that's the difference in staying in this league
Austin has scored as many goals in his last 2 PL games as Defoe managed in his last 30 for Spurs. Quit living in the past. 5 years ago, yes. Even 2 years ago, maybe. Now? Like the rest of the 'Golden Generation' he's finished. Why on earth do you think he's in the MLS otherwise? There's only one reason Redknapp would sign him again, and it's got nothing to do with goals. How on earth can you think Defoe wouldn't be a gamble? He hasn't been a force at this level for 3 years. Just got a few goals against League One level sides in the UEFA Cup. AVB gave Defoe loads of chances, he had loads of starts under him, but he didn't score goals. It's just a fact.

A lot of clubs at our sort of level are of the opinion that it may take too much time and investment trying to polish these rough diamonds - they would rather someone else did the groundwork and then use their financial clout to attract.I've lost count of the number of non -league and lower football league players I've seen who I personally thought would make it.I could see where Assombalonga would improve from his Wealdstone days but it took a bit of polishing at Braintree and Sarfend before Watford continued the process.Have you got the courage to short circuit that business and sign the guy?You could end up with any number of Troy Hewitts. God,it's so difficult.

It would be a gamble , of course it would . But no more of a gamble than relying on someone who has never kicked a ball in this league .
Redknapp got pelters last year for not signing cover for Charlie (even though he had been trying all month)and paid for it when he got injured in the last week of Jan ,confirmed as long term on the 31st .... we ended up with Keane and Maiga and the playoffs. .
It looks as though it may happen , it may be a done deal . He is going to play in a hooped shirt so I say get behind him until he shows you different , he hasnt even got on the plane yet .
I could reel you off a dozen names of decent players whos form dived under AVB.
