Always looked the better team and controlled the game for most of the time. Great performance away from home you would have thought it was at St Mary's!

Really impressive performance from everyone, my one negative is Tadic was never in the game much.He seems to be much better coming of the bench. Really liking this set up Bertrand playing in the back three with Targett pushing forward.
Austin already paying of a big chunk of his transfer early, looks a steal at 4.5 mill.Coyr.

Officials were taken in by United once more,missing a pen., against Long then another by Smalling on van Dijk. Southampton looked assured,strong and business-like. The game was there to win; United being very poor. We deserved the win.

Ah, savour the moment! A sweet victory. Overall we were strong, organised, well disciplined and played as a unit, with a game plan. Downsides were Mane,. He really needs a goal and Tadic. Pretty ineffective on the pitch. United were poor and I'm delighted we took advantage of them on their home turf again. Another clean sheet too.

If we can keep this consistency going, hopefully we can finish top 7. Austin, 1 attempt on goal and scores.. that's what we need. Top marks to Shane Long. Worked his socks off today. Would like to see him and Austin starting together next match.

I have been ranting since the summer to get Austin in specifically for this- he is the type of player that gets that last minute goal that breaks teams hearts! Ron must be delighted-he may have just got Van Gaal sacked.

Not much in this game really both teams struggled to create. Saints looked in control for most of the game and in Charlie Austen we have a guy who given a chance will finish. Could be the bargain buy of the season.

good first half played tempo pressing game...Poulter did well took his goal well...Should really have scored a second. Lost the plot second half ran out of steam....Their goal was very lucky....but Smithies produced several good saves......Should have won it at the end great set up by Connor and Chery should have buried it....bit lucky with handball claim against Hall who again was class

Entertainment wise this really was not a classic, but tactically it was a masterclass and Koeman must be delighted to beat Louis Van Rental on his home turf two years running. The first half in particularly was pretty dull but all the attacking play there was came from the Saints forwards which had the 'natives' increasingly restless and booing their team off at home time (but wouldn't you if you'd flown in from Dubai/China/Portsmouth *delete as appropriate*) Fonte was outstanding and had Shrek in his pocket all afternoon and Forster's mere presence alone has a Gandalf esque none shall pass effect. Manè missed a golden chance but at least ran his socks off, fab favourite Tadic did very litre whereas the much criticised Clasie was my man of the match, chasing down everything and forcing errors from United all over the pitch. Finally, Charlie Austin...what more can you say?First touch first goal, exactly where to be an has clinical finishing we have missed since Lambert left. What a day to be a Saints fan, is there any victory sweeter in the Premier League!

Someone had to say it, and the Observer report doesn't disappoint - "Austin Powers in to raise stakes for Van Gaal".

What fine reading that makes. I agree with other posters that this wasn't a classic game but who cares? Would we rather be Norwich, losing by one goal in an exciting match? I think not.

Don't get carried away though - still a long way to go - but its moments like this that make the painful times worth suffering.
