I believe QPR squads are traditionally unfamiliar with centre forwards as they are trained on a separate pitch.

Back three, change of shape

Not a bad idea, gets Dembele and Chair alongside each other.

Nine matches now and we haven’t been the better side in any of them.

The midfield hole
at 20:29 21 Sep 2024

I’m not convinced we’ll ever get the three behind Frey right. There’s something about it that asks too much of Championship players, particularly behind the three.

I’d like to see us play to the strength of our best players. Dembele should have a free roll behind Frey not stuck out wide and wasted.

We looked best last season with a two from three in Field/Colback/Hayden so Field and Colback still makes sense in front of the existing back four.

Chair still to come in, where you fit the bundle of other midfielders I’m at a slight loss but there’s plenty of them and whether that’s in a loose 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 I’m at a loss to know. We need to simplify it down to round pegs in round holes, and I’d say we can do that in 8 out of the 10 outfield positions. Let the others fight over the spare spots and concentrate on getting a team out playing in their best conventional positions.

In short, I’m technically and tactically worn out, just give us something I can understand.

Good Keeper, defenders and front man but aside of Field, midfield are skittles.

Not an issue having one or two in there, you need playmakers, but four?

The defence has been very good, but the nature of these games is going to result in a lot of wear and tear if this carries on.

Start losing them to injury and we’re in trouble again.

Like a few of the new players but when you use analytics is there a button on the keyboard that analyses what they’re like against big ugly fckers who love to get stuck in a bit?

Our whole defence should be commended for the performances they’re putting in.

What a great run by Frey, timed so perfect it gives Dembele crucial space before playing a pass.

Once again, thank you Birmingham.

Not sure how we’re level but it helps having a Dembele and a Frey.

I think Watmore may be wearing an invisible kit which only we can see.

I believe that reference point emanates from his performance in the last game of the season dead rubber at Coventry.

As a rule of thumb, ignore dead rubber last game of the season performances, in fact, as a guide to what you’re going to get next season, any games against opposition who have hit the beach metaphorically.

It’s the first 40 games where you shift the wheat from the chaff.

Indeed, he’s a very good player.

Couldn’t understand the stick he was getting. Sure he had a few dodgy games, who wouldn’t in a lower half championship side, but he shows up every week, puts a shift in and, dare I say it, able to stamp himself on the game without a certain someone having him doing blind runs all day long.

On the basis of the languid style he had about him on field, he could use the ‘personal consumption’ plea in defence.

15000 witnesses can’t count for nothing.

Genius Eze inevitably wraps return narrative – Report

Enough about the League Cup, I need to know whether Eze’s signed shirt and picture frame made it onto the team bus and did it find its way onto his living room wall in one piece.

Yes that 5 minutes to go play confirmed my worst fears, what was he thinking?

Offers nothing, no wonder Marti wrapped up Frey in cotton wool last night.

Ha ha magic. I wasn’t aware that Alfie Lloyd hadn’t come through our youth system, actually thought they may have got something right for a change. I should have known better.

Utterly Sick of It

League cup games don’t get a manager sacked, bad league form does.

I also feel this season it’s different to previous seasons. We now have a second string, or large parts of it, that are good enough at this level. In the past we’ve thrown in kids who were never going to make it.

There’s been four or five potential bench sitters in this cup run that have proved to themselves that they can step into the first team. That’s got to be a major step forward.

This is a piss poor league this year, we need to aim everything at it, even if it’s only a stepping stone this season.

Impressed considering we only fielded half the first team.

Varane is interesting. Looked like he really enjoyed playing against midfielders who are good enough to play football. Somehow someone persuaded him to have a crack at the Championship, a league of heavy breathers, when he could have been in umpteen European leagues looking particularly good. I hope he breaks through.

Masden is another one. Still doing that disappearing trick but with the ability to change a game with the kind of cross Smyth could only dream of making.

Saito getting better with each game, Ashby a bit wayward with his passing but looked a real asset for championship football.

Enjoyable watch all round.

Great report.

The ‘That shit is everyday life’ paragraph and what immediately preceded it couldn’t have summed up the downside of modern life better.

Big up for Alfie too. Whatever happens that’ll be my goal of the season.

Commentary is a dying art in football, I’d be perfectly happy to watch Rangers playing to a Benny Hill soundtrack.

It might even put a bit more pace in the side.

I’ve watched that goal ten times now and I’ve come to the conclusion that Alfie had a spare ball he dropped out of his pocket and the real ball is still in the 18 yard box somewhere
