The worse we play the luckier we get. |

Awful batting, led by Buttlers awful shot off the first ball from the spinner. Time for a fresh start and send the old guys out to pasture. |

I think it was Spain in 1996 euros that we last beat a top 10 team in euros or WC, and that was on penalties. |

England win the group of dead. Means we have to watch more of this crap. At least Scotland fans were put out of their misery. |

Yes, if the weather intervenes in either Scotlands game or Englands game then England are toast. |

No its about the big clubs offloading risk of players not working out. If they work out great…if they dont, no problem they dont have to cough up the add ons. The risk of a player not working out is left entirely with the selling club. |

Great to see a large sell out crowd watching a cricket game in New York. OK its the India effect but still a great sight. But that pitch is something else. I think they said its the groundsman from Adelaide who is in charge of that. |

Another insipid performance. We do better when it rains…at least we got a point v jocks. Interesting tournament with wins for Scotland, US and Canada. I had to pinch myself to realise it was not the curling world championships. |

Your mantlepiece must be getting full. Congratulations and well deserved though I know getting the best programme in the non league award is not something you ever wanted. |

Yes, your last paragraph is important…and that group includes piemen and publicans who kept us in the football league for over 100 years, oversaw three promotions and several cup runs. Its the character of the people running the club, not their professional background that matters. 49th seasons veiled swipe at past board members backgrounds is uncalled for. |

I struggle to support labour party leaders who were born in the south of England and represent constituencies in the south of England. Neither the current one nor his predecessor had any real exposure to traditional labour areas. You have to go back to Clem Attlee for the one before that. |

He could hang around for the plymouth job….it will be available again before Xmas after they appoint Rooney. |

Yes he played a mixture of full back and centre back in his first season (66-7) playing in every game. In 67-8 he played centre back in all but 4 games where he filled in at full back for….Steve Melledew believe it or not! Even in the promotion season Smith had played 7 games at half back before taking over at full back for Radcliffe in that Workington win. |

Aye, but we were only one point above the bottom four going into that game at high flying Workington. Something ‘clicked’ to get that turnaround in form. |

We lost at Swansea the saturday before Xmas that was 6 games without a win (8 if you include FACup) and were hovering around bottom 4. Workington was on boxing day and we won 2-1 to start a 15 game unbeaten run that took us all the way up to the top 4. We opened 1969 by butchering Grimsby at Spotland 6-1 ( Reg hat trick and Melling scored ). Then the following weekend was the game at Park Avenue and his hat trick - a natural hat trick at that. It was the first time since 1926 that we had two hat tricks in consecutive games, though Reg got two in three games in 1965. We beat Aldershot at Spotland the following Saturday with Melling scoring again, meaning in the four games since Xmas it was 4 wins with a combined score of 15-3, melling and Reg getting 5 each. On Feb 10 Melling played in a 1-1 draw at Newport. After the game Dale signed newports centre forward Tony Buck. Buck replaced Melling in the starting line up in the next game at home to Darlington. The two joined forces for the only time in the following game a 0-0 draw at Lincoln and then Melling was sold to Darlington and Buck scored in 5 of the next 6 games. Good times. |

Dennis Butler at Halifax boxing day 1970. We had lost 5 straight and at the wrong end of Table. Halifax were going great and we stuffed them 4-1. Halifax went on to lose only 3 more games all season and finish third (only two promoted). We went on a 12 game unbeaten run in the league and of course beat Coventry in the Cup. And to add to the legend…Dennis was found to have played with a hairline fracture. |
