Sir Keir Starmer PM
at 23:55 5 Jul 2024

Starmer was the CPS - he was the Director of Public Prosecutions but he had no involvement in the Saville case - it’s on record. The decision to NFA the case was made by a regional prosecutor at a much lower level.

I’m no overly keen on Farage, but we live in a democracy and he has every right to articulate his views as long as they are legal and do not constitute criminal offences. The guys who heckled him have a right to protest and be heard, but there has to be decorum and they went well beyond what’s acceptable.

In terms of Birmingham, again it’s completely unacceptable, threatening and intimidating is not on, the police need to prosecute the offenders in all the instances where offences are being disclosed.

There’s a groundswell of support in the Conservative Party to move further to the right which I’d have thought would preclude Hunt from the job. Last night, a couple of the commentators thought Jenrick could get the job standing on a right wing platform before moving towards the centre as a unity candidate. That surprised me tbh, but it could make sense.

The Lord Frost’s of the world are still pushing the right agenda, but lots of the Conservatives think they need to move more to the centre ground where the bulk of the votes are. They also highlighted the polling demographics where the Conservatives have a very poor supporter base amongst the under 65’s, one Tory big wig said if they don’t change that demographic they’ll do even worse next time out as in 5 years time a proportion of their supporter base will have died.

Sunak's Resignation Speech
at 18:32 5 Jul 2024

I agree with you, the grass roots tories still love Boris, but the general public loath him, and the less said about Truss the better. Sunak is far more savvy and knowledgable than his predecessors.

It’s difficult to make comparisons, like comparing apples with pears!

It may be Reform is the protest party and people are expressing their dissatisfaction with the main stream parties, if Reform hadn’t stood then it may be that Labour would have gained a lot more votes.

What’s done is done and we have to hope we’re under good stewardship for the next 5 years.

Whatever happens, Gething and the Senedd must be scrutinised and held to account.

Saville was nothing to do with Starmer, Boris accused him but had to retract the claim and one of Boris’s top aide’s quit in protest at his accusations.

No Tories in Wales
at 18:08 5 Jul 2024

I picked up on that last night, the Labour vote appeared to be down by around 5% almost across the piste, the result that really caught my eye was Llanelli where Nia Griffith only beat Reform by around 1,000 votes. I suspect the issues at the Stradey Parc Hotel have pushed people towards Reform as has the debacle around the 20mph limit and Gething’s expenses. Plaid Cymru increased their vote share.

If Labour have any sense, they’ll have identified these issues and will act on them.

Interestingly last night, Drakers said last night that a Labour government in Westminster would benefit Wales. He explained that when Rhodri Morgan was in power here and Blair and Brown were in power in London the lines of communication were open, he then gave the example of when Cardiff tried to phone London regarding the issues at Tata and potential loss of 3000 jobs they never managed to speak with anyone - nobody up the line was interested.

Labour less popular now than under Corbyn?
at 17:47 5 Jul 2024

Prior to 2000, GE turn out was always over 70%, since then it’s fluctuated between 59% and 67%.

Whatever our thoughts about popularity, we have to hope that our new government is more capable and sensible than its predecessor.

Robert Buckland went off on one last night, and had a right pop at certain individuals in his party, Braverman was apologetic today and claimed the Conservatives had failed while Badenoch took a completely opposite view and was bullish.

I expect the conservatives to continue with their infighting in the short term before reuniting behind the new leader. Be interesting to see the dynamics between them and Farage.

Sir Keir Starmer PM

I was listening to Radio 4 this morning and they several guests on the show who talked about how well he’d done restructuring and improving a fractured and disjointed CPS after his appointment as the DPP. They gave the impression of him being a nuts and bolts kind of guy who understood how things work and the need to go in to detail to get things done.

You mention manifesto and other commitments, only a small number of the 2019 manifesto commitments were met. There was a commitment to reduced immigration, but clearly that hasn’t happened and I suspect is the driver behind Respect’s surge in popularity. Rees Mogg specifically mentioned immigration in this mornings interview.

I’m sick of bull@@@@@@‘s to be honest, I’d rather have someone of substance who gets things done and sorted than a slick liar who promises the earth and delivers nothing. If Starmer turns out to be someone who gets things done I’ll be happy.

The main migration we’ve had is legal migration which is controlled by the government, there is nothing the opposition parties could do about that, the conservatives had a majority in parliament and the conservatives have to own that - end of, no ifs or buts.
In terms of the illegal migration, we’ve been let down significantly and the government have to carry the can.

I’m hoping Starmer grips Welsh Labour and gets rid of Vaughan Gething and tells the WG to build a new road around Newport. If they don’t listen, then bring pressure to bear.

Not long until the liars are out.
at 21:53 4 Jul 2024

Well Lord Daniel Hannan, Conservative Peer in the House of Lords, former Conservative MEP, who writes for a plethora of conservative leaning publications is hardly going to come out with an article which favours Labour.

Starmer has moved Labour firmly to the middle ground, if he wants to stay in power he has to maintain that large base of voters and he can’t afford to @@@@ off the electorate. The reasons the Conservatives are in the mess they are at the moment is because of Boris, the rot started under him with the parties, fines, wall paper finance issue, the sleaze, corruption and pincher business to name a few issues. People don’t, by and large forget. Chuck in the Trusster and Sunak had a massive hill to climb, one he couldn’t manage even with a NI give away bribe.

Starmer needs middle England, he has it at the moment and he cant afford to lose it.

Solar Panel Funding
at 21:34 4 Jul 2024

It’s defo worth speaking to a few people and looking at the different options. Solar panels are really cheap atm, but the cost of fitting etc isn’t going down as it should as there is a lot of profiteering, commission being paid etc.

My brother in law is a plumber,, he reckons a hot water system or a programmer which will heat your hot water tank ( if you have one) is worth looking at.

One thing you really need to look in to is whether you can actually export the electric to the grid because in some places the infrastructure can’t deal with the extra loading. I’ve been told that several houses in our area have been disconnected from the electricity grid because the contractors cracked on with the job without getting all the paperwork in order - the reason they didn’t get the paperwork sorted was because they knew they wouldn’t get permission!! They cracked on anyway and it ended up with the homeowners being cut off.

The redevelopment/new bus station also includes office space, shops and over 300 apartments. I’d suggest that is where a significant chunk of the money has been spent.

That’s decent value compared to Bristol where it’s a minimum of £6 for 10 mins.

There should be a free of charge window to allow for people to be picked up, it should be part of their licensing conditions. After say 5 or 6 mins, a charge would be fair game.

Will Reform win a single seat?
at 18:40 3 Jul 2024

We had the chance to vote on the introduction of an alternative system a few years ago and rejected its. FPTP has favoured the Conservatives, the recent boundary changes also favour the Conservatives as does the introduction of voter ID, so I suspect they may not do well tomorrow but they aren’t going to get the kicking everyone thinks they will.

I think we definitely need to review FPTP, but it will probably consign us to years of coalition governments whereby parties work together to govern the country.. There are definitely positives, but equally we could be beholden to a group like the DUP a la Theresa May. Being totally cynical, someone like Starmer could hold on to power and if there were signs Labour were losing power due to unpopularity, they could introduce PR and hold on longer working in coalition. 😳

He may well be finished off once and for all during the next parliament if Labour win. I’d imagine there’ll be a shout for a couple of investigations, Lebedev, maybe some of the other stuff that hasn’t quite been bottomed out could also resurface. Without allies in No 10 he could experience a bit of grief.
