| News Comment | Spanish Club In Negotiations For Southampton Midfielder at 16:54:25
No Prowsey hasn’t done much….apart from putting us 1 up at Spurs and is currently a joint top scorer. Anyway, hopefully Oriol will stay for another season. The guy is quality and has been an excellent servant to the club. We talk about experience and he has it in spades. Would be a good mentor for the youngsters and can still put a shift in on the pitch. |
| News Comment | Jack Stephens Linked With Move To Watford at 14:11:58
Stubborn Ralph? Don’t we have a recruitment team responsible for transfers? Haven’t we already shipped out Verstergaard and brought in another CB? I expect, if he had his way, there would be a number of other changes. We still have monetary constraints and have some deadwood that it is hard to shift. With all due respect to Jack Stephens, he was fine as a bench warmer but we need better. If he goes to Watford good luck to him and I expect he is better suited to the Championship. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Leeds United The Verdict at 10:31:01
With 5 subs were are going to see a lot more of thirty people of squad use. The best starting eleven will be more of a team to keep things tight until the second half and our better players will appear when the opposition are getting tired. The trick is not to concede goals before you bring on the big guns! |
| News Comment | Southampton V Crystal Palace The Verdict at 11:44:04
Fair summary I’d say. The trouble is that when we used to play the ball around sideways and backwards we get frustrated and want to play forward. I agree that is hasn’t been a bad season overall but we have just dropped off since the West Ham game. Fair play to Ralph for trying to find a winning formula, but little seems to be working at the moment. |
| News Comment | Irony Not Lost As Le Tissier Steps Down As Southampton FC Ambassador at 14:49:20
Who’s decision was it for him to stand down? Was he sacked or did he take the decision himself. The problem is, in the role such as his, he was there because he was a highly respected player for his whole career. Rightly or wrongly his outspoken comments have called his integrity into question and in many eyes he has become the objection of derision. How does that square with someone who has been given that particular job because of the respectability? He said he had decided to stand down, a decision we should respect under the circumstances. If the club asked him to do so, we should also respect that decision. I am not saying that he is as ridiculed as David Icke (yet) but can you imagine Icke being a club ambassador at Coventry City given the way people view him for his opinions? Freedom of speech is one thing. Suggesting that the media might be lying to us when there is so much evidence, including civilian eye witnesses, of rape and murder of men, women and children probably wasn’t the brightest thing to do if you want to remain credible and respected. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester City The FA Cup Verdict at 10:48:19
We are not a sh1t show and Ralph is not a bad manager. He has done well with what he has but we are an average team who, on our day, can compete with the best but we don’t have the resources to have the quality in depth to find the consistency to step up. Just look at the players City had on the bench yesterday. We are nowhere being the best but we are also not the worst and for a club with our resources that is all we can aspire to. Whether the new owners make a difference in the future, who knows, but given the investment in the squad in recent years, avoiding relegation and some good cup runs is the best we could expect. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Swansea City The Verdict at 10:58:36
Lots of debate about whether it was a foul or not but Valery should not have given the ref a decision to make in the first place. It looked to me a blatant foul and a yellow in real time. The replay showed that perhaps he went down too easily (although they may have been a clip apart from the hand) but with no VAR to review Valery’s rashness cost us dear. Just like Salisu, once he got an early yellow I could see him ending up with a red. As it turned out it didn’t effect the final result, but with Brentford on Tuesday we could have done without extra time. Sounded a bit harsh about Bednarek putting the ball into his own net. It came in at pace and there wasn’t much he could do about it. We had some excellent chances to make it 2 before they equalised which would have won the game in normal time. For a CB Stephens is poor in the air. How he put that far post header wide only he will know. Excellent performance from the captain who is back to his best and a shout out for Diallo who looked good when he came on. Romeu is not looking his usual solid self so perhaps a change there coming soon? Finally a big pay on the back to Shane Long who came off the bench and changed the game. |
| News Comment | Ralph Hasenhuttl Welcomes New Owners To St Mary's at 19:41:40
Such good news. At long last we seem to have owners, a board and a manager who are all singing from the same hymn sheet. As Nick said, now that Ralph has the shackles off, hopefully we will see him flourish and the time to judge his true abilities will be once the new people have bedded in. |
| News Comment | Happy Birthday Mike Channon at 14:13:27
Ron Davies was my first Saints hero, closely followed by Mick Channon. I remember in his early days he used to fall over a lot prompting many a groan from around The Dell. What a terrific player he became though. I can’t remember when and why the windmill celebration happened but it was certainly a later addition in his career. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Chelsea The Carabao Cup Verdict at 22:42:01
After that performance tonight I would be quite happy for Lyanco to replace Bednarek on Saturday. Can’t fault the commitment tonight and it’s a shame the pressure didn’t pay off at the end. With an important game coming up perhaps it was best that we didn’t play another 30 minutes but we could well have won it in extra time. |
| News Comment | Leeds Win Makes It A Solid Start For Saints at 13:52:21
I wasn’t expecting us to get anything at Goodison so the only real disappointment this season for me was the Wolves match. Hopefully now we have got this monkey off our back and have Stuey back we can pick up a few more wins and focus on that instead of wondering when Eddie Howe is going to take over. |
| News Comment | Southampton Still Have A Central Defensive Crisis at 11:03:53
I’m not fussed about age but speed and mobility would be useful in the system Ralph plays. Bednarek is slow as was Vestergaard and we were constantly done for pace. Cahill was not the answer. Let’s hope we finally get someone in who can make a difference. |
