Let's put this to bed...
at 16:22 2 Jan 2025

Totally agree.

Smyth has improved but this is based on a very small sample size. For some perspective: Dembele achieved the same assists and goals as Smyth, in just 10 league games, which is hugely impressive for a novice in this division. Yet the consensus held by some was that Dembele wasn't quite ready yet and needed to be rested, prior to his injury.

Dare I say it, but Paal is only one goal assist behind Smyth in the league, so I take it that he's also not having a bad season either.

Let's leave aside the comparisons to Chair, Sinton, Thomas et al, as they are just fanciful.

Interesting how the same/similar levels of contributions, from our players in the league, can be perceived so differently.

Keep it up Paul.

I wouldn't be loaning out Walsh at all. Nardi has been on the deck recently, but yesterday, he was simply feigning that he had been impeded when Watford scored a valid goal from the corner.

Arsenal have infringed and fouled goalkeepers far worse in corner situations, than anything Watford did to Nardi. We got away with it yesterday and Nardi needs to come up with a more convincing counter measure than going to the ground when barely touched by an opposing player.

Luton will test him sternly in such situations on Monday, I'm sure, as that moment will not have gone unnoticed by future opponents.

I fear that we could lose Walsh at the end of the season because for mine, he's already as good as a number of goalkeepers in this league and deserves more game time, which he won't get here.

Respectfully, you need to watch that particular passage of play again. Smyth mis-controlled the ball whilst Ashby overlapped. Watford exploited the space left vacant by Ashby and broke on us to score with the aid of a deflected shot. To level all the blame on Paal beggars belief.

I thought Ashby played well today but we were leading 2-0 at the time and there was no need for him to bomb forward in advance of Smyth at that stage.

I suspect that if that incident had arisen on the left side between Chair and Paal, your willingness to absolve Ashby would not be so forthcoming in the case of Paal.

We, yes the whole team, played well today against a decent Watford side. Yet it would appear that certain players are blamed regardless, even when the source of the fault clearly emanated on our right side.

Well played the entire team today.

Werder Bremen!

They're seventh in the Bundesliga and a few points shy of a "champions" league place. Ganzer Unsinn.

Totally agree with you. I didn't know that our squad was replete with such an embarrassment of riches. There's many an embarrassment in that squad that are far less capable than Paal and largely get a free pass: abject Andersen for starters, who's doubtless earning more than Paal.

Be careful what you wish for. Him and Dunne will both be hard to replace on the budget we now operate. Both played their part in that back four under the MC last season, which formed the bedrock of our recovery to avoid relegation. The way some on here, and at least another thread, denigrate Paal, we've clearly struck a deal for the signature of an Andy Robertson calibre left-back who will be coming through the door imminently. I'm all agog.

He's as good as most left-backs in this league.

Really! You're jesting

An incredible 172 premier league goals in just 268 games for Liverpool, alongside over 80 goal assists, would seem to suggest otherwise.

I think most will agree with you, and in the not too distant future, those three behind a striker may come to pass, with Saito and Smyth also being under consideration. That would make for a very creative and potentially potent attacking line-up, that could do some serious damage.

In the meantime, three goals as a novice forward in just 4 actual starts (3 in that position) and 4 appearances off the bench, is testament to his undoubted ability to adjust to playing in that role. For mine, he is now an integral part of this team. He also has two goal assists.

So pleased for him.

Well summarised. That has happened in the last few games and Saito has been dispossessed way too easily. He's still a talent who will get better and I hope he's with us beyond this season.

However, there are levels and he's not at Chair's level yet. Chair also dropped deep on a few occasions, when he came on, to receive a pass and got a shot off, which their keeper saved and then thwarted Smyth's effort going in. In addition to the instances you mentioned, that's some involvement in just over half-an-hour's play.

We have definitely missed Paal too, who that miss aside, had a good game and enabled us to use the entire width of the pitch. They dovetailed well down the left-hand side.

Smyth,s Goal?
at 12:01 16 Dec 2024

The wonderfully gifted Dave Thomas who could cross effortlessly with either foot. The best winger I have seen at QPR. A player who played at the highest level for the majority of his career, with England caps to boot. Comparisons, directly/obliquely, are being drawn with Paul Smyth, really.

And yes, Dave Thomas would get past defenders and deliver accurate/inch perfect crosses at a rate of frequency that Smyth can only dream of achieving. Achieved on pitches that most of the time resembled quagmires.

Totally this.

Amazes me that some of us seem to think that we are a better team without him. He was only on the field for about 15 minutes, but in that time the ball was played to him in tight situations/areas and the ball stuck. That never happened with Saito, yesterday, who is very talented, but yesterday's game showed to me that he still has a lot to learn.

When Paal came on, for the first time in the entire game, the left-side linked up effectively: correctly weighted passes played to feet and then running off the ball to receive the return pass and actually move forward into space with some purpose.

We'll need him for the remainder of the season as he's better than all of the other attacking midfield players at our club. The MC's rallying call, post-match, that the club isn't lulled into thinking that we've turned the corner, was telling as well.

I keep reading that he's young. He's 23.

Novice in terms of the number of starts at any level of proper competitive football, but he's not that young.

Delighted that we managed to get an undeserved point today. I would argue that the referee's performance today, was far better than our team's. Worst performer of all being Andersen.

The referee's decisions in the first five minutes had no bearing on our poor performance. What did you think of last week's referee, was he a homer too. For we were the beneficiaries of some favourable calls, which if awarded against us, could have changed the course of that game.

Love his effort, honesty and physicality, but agree totally with your summation re: lack of touch, technique and the ball hardly ever being under his control when running at defenders.

Different position, but he was still a lot better than abject Andersen.

He's been unbelievably poor all season and unbelievably, manages to get a free pass from many of us, as fans. He has to be replaced. Change shape and play Morgan, who should have started ahead of Andersen.

He only looked good last season because of Willock and Chair being the opposition's focus of attention.

I'm supporting him alright. However, Morrison isn't playing on his preferred side, yet he is capable of using his left foot and is comfortable in doing so when required.

It's a basic skill which Ashby, coming from a premier league background, should have been able to master. There are no excuses.

Very good signing in my opinion. Can't stop thinking what might have been, had we been able to capture him instead of him going to Notts Forest and playing a huge part in their promotion.

I hope we re-sign him, as all sides need experienced heads amongst the younger nucleus of players. Morrison is a good prospect and has performed well to date, but will have dips in form. It happens to virtually all young players.
