Team selection for next match 10:15 - Jan 26 with 929 viewsnumptydumpty

Nardi

Paal Cook Edwards Dunne

Colback Field

Saito Kolli Smyth

Lloyd

Think time to rest a few.

Varane and Morgan on bench for next one.

Chair and Frey also benched for me, think others are currently in better form.

Saito Colback Kolli Lloyd from the start.

I would get Cook in from the start myself also. Fox done nothing wrong but Cook is our leader and we need him back.

The fact Dunne and Paal are always selected when for me both also would benefit from a game on as sub too, but we have zero cover at full back.

And how regularly do we never have cover either full back. Very strange but I see several changes for the next game.

It's a full week to cover and not much travel so I would drop Chair and bring in Kolli to see if that works better with Frey BUT I would change that up shortly after half time if it's not working and try Alfie Lloyd instead of one of them. That's three very different types of threats to deal with across 90 minutes and if one of the combinations/relationship works, I think it's a good model for similar games.

I don't think you can change the midfield so much and hope that we can do the job of 3 with 2, especially where one is Colback who isn't 100% fit. We've tried that and failed baldy until we switched systems. I think Colback's role is now more of a late sub for game management IF we are ahead and not chasing the game like yesterday.

Who plays on the left at CB ? Both Cook and Edwards are primarily right sided and I think Edwards plays well there (RCB) when next to Dunne but I don't think I have seen Cook or Edwards at LCB yet, only Morrison (and JCS & Fox).

So, if we want Cook back, I would start him at RCB with Morrison at LCB and maybe bring on Edwards for Cook if he's short of fitness. Fox for Morrison on the left as a sub (or vice versa if Fox starts).

So:

Nardi

Paal Morrison (Fox) Cook (Edwards) Dunne

Field Varane (Colback) Morgan (Colback)

Kolli (Lloyd) Frey (Lloyd) Smyth (Saito)

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

I'd like to see Cook and Morrison back in defence. Cook brings leadership and Morrison is our most promising young defender. Chair needs games to find his form so I'd start with him but have subs ready earlier than we did v Wednesday.

There will not be wholesale changes for the Millwall game.......

Looking at the game yesterday where we did OK but not enough to win the game and depending on fitness of players I would pick the following team.....

Nardi, Paal & Dunne (FBs), Edwards & either Cook/Morrison(CB's), Varane(DCM), Colback, Field, Smyth, Chair(??) M) & Frey/Lloyd(F).

Millwall an intimidating place to play, they are big & strong, we need some brave players in the starting 11. We have enough in the team/squad to beat them.

Not sure defence is really an issue. Think you could play 2 from Edwards, Cook, Morrison and Fox. Doubt there would be much difference. However, Edwards has to start for me.

The issue yesterday was we looked tired and we were up against a big physical side. I hope/expect we’ll see more energy next weekend.

Question is whether Edwards can play on the left. I think we need Cook back because the on-field leadership yesterday was poor particularly in the back line where we needed to be more direct as our tactics through the press were not working.

Chair is an interesting conundrum. He gives us so much. more defensively. But the 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 formation does not suit as he needs someone to help him get into space to be effective. Morgan is going to the right. Field to the left. The whole left side from Fox, Paal, Field and Chair struggled to get Chair into the position to be an attacking threat because none of them are particularly good passers (missing JCS there) . Not helped by a poor display from Frey. In the 4-2-3-1 or the 3-4-2-1 Chair has better passers and a 10 to play off to work the space. Chair will be more effective IMHO with Colback and Kolli on the pitch but not sure that is right for Millwall

I'd expect Frey to start as it's Millwall but he wasn't great v Wednesday. He couldn't make to ball stick and didn't lay off to others effectively. Might there be an argument for starting Kolli and trying to play to feet a bit more?

I have to say I'm not up to speed with Millwall's current style under Neil, although his sides are usually pretty physical.

I didn't think we were bad yesterday, quite an even game and first goal was always going to win it, I wouldn't be changing too much, thought Edwards was excellent again, would stick with him and Fox
