3 days away, but could there be a threat to the Oldham match on Saturday? It got to -4c last night and with 3 more sub zero nights to come, including Friday night, the grass will be getting a little solid.
I addition to that a potent low pressure system swings in early on Saturday with the possibility of a couple of hours snow before it all turns very wet. A Met Office warning is out for that. Even if there's not much in the way of snow, a lot of rain falling onto frozen or semi frozen ground isn't going to drain away that fast.
To add to that, there's increasing likelihood of snow overnight Thurs/Fri, and amounts will possibly be more than we had Mon/Tue. Anything that falls will hang around all Friday as the temps will just get above freezing.
Fingers crossed it doesn't play out like that, but potential problems are there. Hopefully they are being dealt with.

Our six-fingered friends are out in force on their forum, apparently we didnt want the game on because we took the covers off yesterday as our 1st choice goalkeeper and striker are both injured.... this of course means we are tinpot and a range of other descriptions and unfit to be a football club...The Biffos are certainly living up to their nickname today....
Of course, Oldham Athletic will never have had a match postponed because of the weather. That would be so tinpot.
It really is brilliant how RAFC can conjure up five days of sub-zero temperatures that affected the nation and created a storm that arrived on precisely the right day, just to spite a non-league club with a deluded, Neanderthal fan base. How do they do it?

Their stupidity is stunning.
Our biggest payday of the season, sold out hospitality, Sir Peter and his family apparently attending the game, and all the other benefits - but we didn't want the game on!
Seems as though The Ogdens aren't only our saviours, they can influence weather conditions as well.
Bottom line is, most of those Oldham fans are annoyed because they wanted a day out on the ale where they could also act the goat. The match is incidental to them.

Going forward in the close season next year a major overhaul of the pitch done properly along with vast improvements to the ticketing system will pay dividends. I know today's game is was buy tickets by 5pm the day before but had it been a more standard fixture, with other games being called off in the area. Some folk might have chosen a trip to Spotland for their weekend footy fix.
It’s a perennial of a problem, Rochdale being the wettest large town in England. This weeks double whammy of cold then very wet is going to be problematic for all but Premier league pitches. Scotland has embraced plastic pitches, which given our weather would be sensible, but would preclude us being a league club again. The alternative would be to install a modern hybrid pitch with advanced drainage and under soil heating, cost would be £1.5 - £3m. I’d suggest we are going to have to continue to put up with the occasional postponement.

If we invested in the best pitch covers that are rated to minus 10 degrees with under soil heating along the side of the pitch sheltered by the main stand. Sort the drainage system out, properly. Then there would be far fewer postponements.

That did make me smile. Even Backburn Rovers up the road with significantly more resources than we have couldn't get their game on today. When it rains on semi frozen sub soil, it doesn't drain quickly.
Our pitch is pretty good for a non league club. It has had more than £1m spent on it over the past 5 years. Owdum have had similar investment but theirs came from the council. We haven't got an open chequebook and to be fair we don't have many postponements anymore. We have to suck it up and move on. Pity this couldn't have been a Sunday 1pm kick-off with hindsight.

Given the forecast this week leading upto the game this was always going to fall foul of the weather. Only chance was the weather not being as bad as forecast but seems this was pretty much spot on so no surprise it’s off. I suspect if we’d been playing a normal run of the mill team it would have been called off yesterday but it was given every chance to go ahead because of it being a local derby. Last season a call off like this would have been disastrous given our finances. If the game had gone ahead there was a chance it might not have finished as conditions haven’t improved and that would have resulted in a much worse situation with a destroyed pitch and players expending needless energy. At least now players will be fresh for Tuesdays trip to Gateshead and the pitch will be in a better state for upcoming games. Id be surprised if Oldhams pitch would have been in a fit state to stage the game given this weather.

With the rain we have had today, I doubt the game would have been on at 3, it as poured down all day and the river in the town was extremely high. It will be interesting if the game at Gateshead is on, come Tuesday, because the weather predictions for next week are not sounding good.
But we must remember according to some of the deluded Biffos they are a massive team and don't get games postponed, and if you read the forum, we cannot afford pitch covers, are scared of them, the pitch is rubbish, etc and one topic on their forum is classic, they regard City and United as their main rivals in the area, because that is how big a team they are.

Oldham Athletic are a non-league team. Some of their fans pretending they are a "massive" club, claiming imaginary rivalries with two of the biggest clubs in the world is irony beyond hilarious.
Rochdale away is their biggest game and they know it.
No wonder the BIFFO acronym sticks.

Joking about the silly comments from the Oldham contingent aside. Travel arrangements will have been made, some may have booked time off. Others may have made hotel/guest house reservations, some all three.
Have seen on Facebook that someone has travelled from Australia with this game on his "to do list". He has my sympathy, happened to me on a visit in 2018.

Oldham did have their "day in the sun" in the Royle era, and I do not begrudge them that. I am sure several Dale fans at that time transferred their loyalty. However, it should be noted that when this happens, the net effect is an increase in the average IQ level of both sets of fans.

Your wit has been missed
Wit? Nah, not my wit, as I just adapted a quote from an ex PM of NZ, Muldoon. Used to have a business in Oldham. We did some work for OAFC, and never got fully paid, so any chance to wind them up suits me.

Copied from an Oldham social media page. I thought he was joking, but then he bollocked me for laughing.
"And I still can't figure out how West Bromwich Albion's ground in the Midlands is higher above sea level than Oldham Athletic's ground further north? Surely the more north you go the higher above sea level you are? it just doesn't make geographical sense."

By far the thickest fans in football.
Talking of which - realisticdale hasn’t posted for a few days. It’s almost as if he only appears around the times we play the dimwits.
