Yes those old wooden racquets were not easy to play with, much smaller heads and smaller sweet spots.

Max ply. Imagine what Laver, Rosewall,Hoad,Emerson,Sedgeman would have have done with modern racquets As for Margaret Court, nobody would be able to return even her serve .

Good point. They would have had to change their stroke play to a modern forehand and probably backhand. All the coaches start the youngsters with a two handed backhands, which has become predominant in the game. Top spin is so important in the game now, especially with baseline play. However they would have been trained earlier from a young age on how to hit a ball.

Rosewall in particular had what was described as the perfect backhand and hecwasxsuperfit. Both the youngest and the oldest to win the Australian Open, not been beaten and never will .

Andy Murray, greatest British sportsman of all time? on 18:09 - Jan 18 with 1052 views | Cleddau | It's hard for me to look past Daley Thompson. For all his world records, Thompson was only the current holder going into one of his gold medal championships in that 1980-86 period (2 x Olympic, 1 x World, 2 x European) and that was the last one, the 1986 Europeans. Back then, the Europeans were the equivalent of the other two in terms of quality. He consistently overcame rivals who had superior performances going in. Thompson was the ultimate competitor who always peaked when it mattered. To have such regular consistency in a ten-event discipline over a seven year period is quite remarkable, when just one slip-up can effectively end your competition. [Post edited 18 Jan 2023 18:11]

Andy Murray, greatest British sportsman of all time? on 04:04 - Jan 18 by Kilkennyjack | Andy is a Scot. The greatest Scottish sportsman is Olympic 100 metre gold medallist Alan Wells. Or Fergie. Murray is top 3. |
Alan Wells won a gold in Moscow which was boycotted by the USA West Germany and others he also never held a world record, Fergie was never capped by Scotland so was nothing special as a footballer so neither can compare with Murray who won 3 grand slams against the very best in the world. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Andy Murray, greatest British sportsman of all time? on 16:24 - Jan 18 by britferry | A few more slams? Frederick John Perry (18 May 1909Â — 2 February 1995) was a British tennis and table tennis player and former world No. 1 from England who won 10 Majors including eight Grand Slam tournaments and two Pro Slams single titles, as well as six Major doubles titles. Perry won three consecutive Wimbledon Championships from 1934 to 1936 and was World Amateur number one tennis player during those three years. Prior to Andy Murray in 2013, Perry was the last British player to win the men's Wimbledon championship, in 1936,[4] and the last British player to win a men's singles Grand Slam title, until Andy Murray won the 2012 US Open. Perry remains the last English player to win a men's singles Grand Slam title. Perry was the first player to win a "Career Grand Slam", winning all four singles titles, which he completed at the age of 26 at the 1935 French Championships. He remains the only British player ever to achieve this. Perry's first love was table tennis and he was World Champion in 1929. He began playing tennis aged 14 and his tennis career at 21, when in 1930 an LTA committee chose him to join a four-man team to tour the United States. In 1933, Perry helped lead the Great Britain team to victory over France in the Davis Cup; the team's first success since 1912, followed by wins over the United States in 1934, 1935, and a fourth consecutive title with victory over Australia in 1936. But due to his disillusionment with the class-conscious nature of the Lawn Tennis Club of Great Britain, the working-class Perry turned professional at the end of the 1936 season and moved to the United States where he became a naturalised US citizen in 1939. In 1942, he was drafted into the US Army Air Force during the Second World War. Despite his unprecedented contribution to British tennis, Perry was not accorded full recognition by tennis authorities until later in life, because between 1927 and 1967 the International Lawn Tennis Federation ignored amateur champions who later turned professional. |
Let’s be honest, if Perry was around today in his prime, he wouldn’t be top 100. Murray would destroy him in every possible way. He played in trousers and wooden racquets where serve and volley was the order of the day. Same goes for Margaret Court, I can’t stand Serena but Serena would destroy her when both in their prime. Wouldn’t even be close.

Lets put this to bed, the roster when Perry was playing was a fraction of what it is today hence less players to compete against that is the main reason why historians very rarely include Perry at the very top in any all time sporting greats list and logic tells us it is indeed a valid reason, and of course the open era of Tennis did not begin until 1968 which again dims Perry legacy as the best British sportsman also his back hand was so poor it would by highly unlikely he would be anywhere near a top player going by today's standards.

Nobody said he had a world record. Have a ponder on this from wiki …. Allan Wipper Wells MBE (born 3 May 1952) is a Scottish former track and field sprinter who became the 100 metres Olympic champion at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.[1] Within a fortnight of that, he also took on and beat America's best sprinters at an invitational meeting in Koblenz. In 1981, Wells was both the IAAF Golden Sprints and IAAF World Cup gold medallist. He is also a three-time European Cup gold medallist among many other sprint successes. Olympic 100 metre sprint champion alone is amazing. Fergie. Nobody said he was an international apart from you. You even got that wrapped around you. ‘Ferguson's only involvement with the Scotland national team was during an overseas tour in 1967. For many years none of the tour matches were recognised by the Scottish Football Association as full internationals, and so Ferguson was deemed to have never played for Scotland. A BBC Sport article in June 2020 identified him as one of the best Scottish players to have never played a full international.[22] The SFA announced in October 2021 that some of the tour matches would be reclassified as full internationals, which meant that Ferguson was belatedly awarded an international cap.[3]’. Please try harder.

Zero chance. The game has moved on by a thousand miles, barely recognisable as the same sport. It’s a completely different skillset.

It was the three Americans who were missed at the Olympics, the West Germans and other boycotting countries had no-one of significance in the sprints. Wells accepted an offer to face the three Americans who qualified for the Games in Germany just two weeks after the Olympic final. He beat all three while winning the race. He beat all three again the following season, as well as the emerging Carl Lewis. Though people like to degrade his Olympic gold, he proved he was world number one in the 100m over the course of the season. But I'm not saying Wells is greater than Murray. Linford Christie faced similar criticism of his 100m Olympic Gold in '92 because of the absence of Carl Lewis.

I'm with you on this , my favourite sportsman of that era and a gent with it . To be consistently top in ten disciplines for so long and when the competition was so good takes some doing In 1980, after setting a world record in May with 8,622 points, Thompson dominated the competition at the Olympics in Moscow to win the first of his gold medals. Particularly strong in the shorter distance runs and jumping events, Thompson twice set world records in 1982 and placed first in the 1983 world championships. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Thompson successfully defended his title, equaling the achievement of the American Bob Mathias, who won Olympic decathlon gold medals in 1948 and 1952. Although Thompson’s total of 8,797 points fell one point short of the world record, when the scoring tables for the decathlon were adjusted in 1985, his Olympic point total was changed to 8,847, and he was awarded the world record"

His is of course more than happy to live in his luxury £5 million mansion in Surrey. Last time Iooked Surrey was not a Scotland. Murray by his action has shown he is British.
