Peter Thompson RIP 10:47 - Jan 1 with 2670 viewsmingthemerciless

I see from today's paper that Peter Thompson has died. He was a flying winger in the 1960's , first with Preston and more famously with Liverpool. He made the training squad for the 1966 World Cup but was unluckily left out from the final 22.
I saw him play several times and he was a very clever player with a terrific change of pace. A real pigeon catcher.
He later played for Bolton.

RIP Peter you were a class act.

Great player and one of my favourites of the era. There was a brief 5 minute tribute to him yesterday on TV, amongst which was a story about Shankly saying that Peter Thompson was a tricky, pacey, winger who could beat a man with his burst of speed, athleticism and power. However, said Shanks, what set him aside from other wingers of the era, was that Thompson could do it with the ball at his feet. Typical Shankly, but Peter Thompson was certainly a special player.
