The Pitch 19:59 - Jan 22 with 53200 views | kiwidale | This time last year a decision was made to dig up the pitch and lay a new one it seemed at the time a bold move but a proactive one. Today its becoming apparent the pitch is a write off or is it? no communication from the club leads to speculation. Ive only seen the pics you have seen it close up so is it worse than last year? is it worse than it looks or better than it seems? will it be played on again? [Post edited 22 Jan 2018 20:01]

The Pitch on 20:10 - Jan 22 with 13009 views | 442Dale | First game after all the sand was put on was against Lincoln in the Checkatrade. As badly as we played it was almost secondary to the pitch which was one of, if not THE worst I've seen at Spotland. It could have been a one-off but it played as badly as any surface you could choose to mention. Nobody there that night can proclaim to be an expert, but it was unanimous about poor it was. Who knows, maybe there is something that can be done to it, but it would take some remarkable plan to not warrant ripping it up.

So the pitch now is worse than last year? if so why no communication from the club if only to acknowledge what is apparent, no news adds to the despondency many feel. Behind the scenes contingency plans may be underway but why the secrecy?

Cause that's what Rochdale do when problems a raise, they hope if they don't talk about it might go away. We are only the paying customers, so we don't have a right to know #headinsand. [Post edited 22 Jan 2018 21:17]

Making a comment or statement about said problems then accepts there maybe some blame attached

The Pitch on 22:28 - Jan 22 with 12534 views | rafc1977 | I'll post something I overheard which at the time sounded like another gobshite who "is in the know" and laughable! However the more I have thought about it, and well with all the doom & gloom around, maybe just maybe there is some truth? Not word for word but I got the points. "the game was never in doubt, as it was never going to be on" "for some reason we haven't had to pay southend expenses and that's why no local ref checked Fri or early Sat morning" "The request for help clearing pitch was token gesture, a case of we tried but weather beat us blah blah" (though no significant bad weather, certainly not enough to put a playable surface unplayable) "The ref was requested to inspect late on to give the notion that it had been playable early on, but had suddenly got worse due to weather" Now normally I'd laugh inside at such rubbish, but all things considered does it really sound that unreasonable? You'd like to think so.
The Pitch on 22:30 - Jan 22 with 12527 views | Molly | Last year when the pitch became a quagmire the club "threw" tons of sand at the problem which blocked the drains and led to the need for a re-lay. Why oh why did we put tons of sand on the pitch this year, expecting it to solve a problem. Oh gosh we seem to have blocked the drains again. Wonder why that happened ".Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein.

Correct. Water cannot travel through sand. It's probably why God invented beaches!

The Pitch on 11:11 - Jan 23 with 12066 views | 49thseason | I wondered if the rain covers had been put down on top of a wet pitch. I imagine they would create a vacuum and prevent water getting away if there was already a wet surface. Its time the club invested in a complete rebuild of the pitch and raised it a foot so that the water can be properly drained away or put a trench around it to take the water. The local weather dictates that a different solution is needed rather than the off the shelf pitch renovations that work in less wet places. Add to that an inflatable pitch cover and maybe there would be no need to relay the surface every year, over 10 years this might even be a money saver. Time to remortgage the stadium?

Of course water travels through sand, this is the reason why turf is often laid on sand. The pitch last year was laid on sand, you would have to guess the factor here is the lack of expert maintenance of the pitch. That, with the poor weather have provided us with a crap pitch. We never had this problem with that Olly fella, maybe we should offer him a couple more grand than he’s on at his present employer and get him back?

Without pointing the finger too much the pitch has NEVER been worse from my memory,it does seem to coincide with Ollie leaving too,the weather can't have got much worse and we've never spent as much on a bloody patch of grass!!!!

Think it depends on the size of the sand grains, if they are too small they clog the drainage channels through the soil and prevent water running away. The problem is that if the grains are too large everyone comes off the pitch short of skin on their knees. There is a fair amount of science involved in getting a pitch into shape , the fact that the club seems to need to consult "experts" fairly regularly tells its own story.

are we wrong to expect something from the club? or just moaning sods? What about the local media surely this is a local story worth covering? has anybody from Rochdale online or the Ob rung the club and asked for a comment?

That's the story I heard. The sand used wasn't ideal for the purpose.
