I read on Twitter that a train from Victoria to Wigan had been cancelled due to 'disruptive passengers earlier'. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the scumbags too.

Yeah, saw the idiots with the pitch covers. Very childish. Do these people not realise that every time they cause an incident, home or away, it gets logged, and that's how the police decide how many police and stewards they need at each game. Surely if you are a genuine fan, you would rather see the money spent on the players wage budget than on extra policing and stewards so it makes more sense not to cause trouble? It's a shame really as they are a decent side but the small minority of fans let them down.

Sheffield United fans have always had a bit of a reputation when it comes to football related violence but one look at their supporters forum also reveals they have a overwhelming majority of decent fans who are embarrassed about what happened yesterday.

We hardly have a pot to piss in and damage to the pitch covers/ Stadium is the last thing we need. Absolutely no excuses for the behaviour and it sounds as though the Stewards/ Kiosk Staff had a rough afternoon. I must admit I was expecting more of a police presence around the outside of the ground ( mounted police) and more Stewards deployed ( maybe there was). Maybe they were needed at the Bolton v Burnley fixture down the road or in the City Centre monitoring the Boxing fans/pubs where a big police presence would have been required. All day drinking, testosterone fuelled boxing fans and a fight that doesn't start until nearly midnight isn't a good mix.

Anyway, it's not about the stewards or the police the finger needs pointing at those who can't attend a Football Match without intimidating the general public. They are the real problem nobody else.

Here are two of those decent Blades fans comments:
"Our genuine supporters have been hounded and critisized for daring to speak out about the dross that's infected our team this season. They have been well within there rights and frustrations fully understandable. However today had nothing to do with genuine supporters. The genuine amongst us acknowledged we played well first half and were only pissed off that we didn't make it count. The k***heads element were out in force today though for there big day out. They were itching for us to f**k it up and couldn't wait to sink there teeth in. They're antics and vitriol left the genuine amongst us bowing our heads and shaking them in disbelief. Whether they are good enough or not I'd like to apologise to the players and the good people of Rochdale for there actions. They weren't the actions of proper blades"

"My 12-year-old son was caught in the middle of the action today and by all evidence was very frightened and upset. The Rochdale stewards took him and his dad away from the fights and hostilities, and led him to the United dressing room, telling Adkins: "Here is one of your lads who was scared by what is happening over there". All credit to Adkins, he spent time to console him, took selfies on my child's phone, asked him who his favourite player was and fetched him (Billy Sharp) to come and say hello and give some comfort as well. Billy took the shirt off his back, signed it and gave it to my son. All this consoled my child somewhat - normally, it would have been the highlight of his week! - but until he went to bed, he wouldn't stop repeating who punched whom, what words were shouted, how hostile people came across to be. And this comes from a child who holds a season ticket and goes to away matches at least once a month! In all honesty, I am starting to think that there may be better ways to organise his weekends. And I am not thinking about the poor United scoring record (I don't think my child remembers anything different in his lifetime!), but about wanting to keep him away from some spiteful mob that I would not characterise as a 'community'. This, I think, is sad."

Although they can be tvats prior to yesterday there has never been any problems with their fans at Spotland.
A combination of this and poor police intelligence is probably why the Police and steward numbers were down....
I noticed there was no Tactical aid unit there which I thought was a little unusual for a high profile game.

You are spot on - most of the Blades are decent supporters just like us and fans everywhere else. Looking at their other posts what happened yesterday is not a one off

"Yesterdays behaviour by the yobs, morons and imbeciles was at best infantile and at worst threatening to both, players, stewards and groundstaff but, most of all the proper fans of Sheffield United FC.
They say, the actions are born out of frustration - I was equally frustrated, but didn't have to resort to behaving like a deranged, half wit who have been let out for a day and doesn't have a clue of how to behave when out in public !
I don't want to spend my time with these cretins, but my two recent away days to Doncaster and Rochdale has confirmed that, unfortunately, we have attracted this lowlife to follow our club and they are using our poor performances on the field of play to showcase their true colours ! Hopefully, there is enough cctv, police and YouTube coverage to identify the plebs ! "

"The majority were young lads with black Stone island coats on and expensive trainers who hadn't started shaving yet mixed with some older thick f****s who should know better, both willing each other on. It was so embarrassing and pathetic to people who have seen real trouble back in the day. They know they wouldn't get any opposition (only other Blades as it happens) at Rochdale, unless you call young lasses serving foot long Hotdogs and stewards who couldn't care less. If they faced a mob they would run a mile. The police had 3 of them lined up against a car near ours after the match, they looked like they were going to burst into tears, so pathetic."

"They're complete and utter morons, an embarrassment. I went to Donny and saw them first hand ripping bits off the AC unit and at Rochdale I was towards the end of the stand so could just about make out they were trying to (or appeared to be trying) to get onto the pitch to confront the players, and then I saw the video of them trying to nick the pitch cover. Absolutely pathetic. "

"I know that yesterday we were not at our best by a long chalk but I would like to congratulate the 'supporter' who stood at the front of the stand and continuously swore in the foulest manner c....,t....,b.....d,w.....r l with his equally foul mouthed mates all three of them not just swearing at the Rochdale players but our own as well.

A lady with her disabled daughter who attends all away matches was visibly shaken and distressed by your behaviour that you appeared to think was clever. So much so that she was forced to move away at half time.Verbal bullying of the worst kind.Every time a steward came near you you went silent. You know who you are in the brown beanie hat and waterproof. Well done to scaring two innocent spectators"

I think that the problem lies in the mentality of some of the supporters. Their previous games at Rochdale they have won comfortably so no agro.

A look at their messageboard and you can see a thread which states they will win 3-0. some supporters of 'massive teams' get all upset when they lose to little Rochdale. The audacity of a small club to beat them.

the little Rochdale certainly played a part.

If they looked at the game objectively, they'd have felt a bit unlucky given their first half dominance. There are some amongst their fanbase who have described their first half play as the best they've played all season, and had they gone behind in the same way to a Coventry, they'd have just dismissed it as being one of those things. But losing to little old us made it the worst display ever, and worthy of abusing everyone including their own players (Think Matty Done got a right load of abuse at one stage).

Yep. I had the grace to still meet 442 for a pint in the bar afterwards and congratulated Keith upstairs.

I have a whinge and a moan online about performances and what not, I have a bloody blog and a podcast so I'm no shrinking violet. But at games I'm never going to lose my cool over a game of football. Lower myself to antics similar to those on show at Spotland yesterday. If things aren't great I usually find humour in it. It's a well known Barnsley coping mechanism.

Dem blades play Burton next. If Nigel Clough beats them, I can only imagine what it's going to be like.

One last thing.

In our region, our local BBC radio service is BBC Radio Sheffield. And after every matchday they have a two hour show called Praise or Grumble. I'll say thanks again to Rochdale for making last nights show a wonderful 120 minutes listening.

"if da carnt beat teams like dat, den da might as well resign Sadkins"

"it's a joke dat we are losing to teams like Rochdale"

"even Baaaarnsley are above us nar den"

It'd have to be all-ticket for both fans otherwise they'd just go in our end.

I was in the ticket office yesterday and there were two blokes with Yorkshire accents (alarm bell 1 ringing) buying tickets for the Sandy Lane (alarm bell 2 ringing).

Must not forget that these covers were purchased with Dale Trust Funds.....ie walking to Accy in the rain!

Surely,if any damage is found the Club MUST bill Sheff United accordingly......any insurance claim will incur higher premiums for sure......no free lunch from them sods!

Regarding policing costs, would it make sense to make visiting teams foot the bill for policing their own supporters? Or, at least, share total costs. Might make some of the morons think twice if it was hurting their club financially.
