Blockhouse is great, the garlic bread they serve is still my favourite. A good quality chain thats originally from Hamburg. |

the last bit is not strictly true is it? All you have to do is look for opinion pieces by people like Ferari, Hartley-Brewer, Oakshot etc about how smokers, drinkers etc (whoever theyre directing their ire towards that given day) should be refused treatment for the burden they put on the public purse.
"we will now cross to Steve from Portsmouth who thinks drunk teens should be refused the use of an ambulance"
I'm not sure whether the practice was ever adopted but there was frequently talk of the NHS not granting treatment to people before they lost weight or kicked habits like smoking or excessive drinking. [Post edited 10 Jan 2022 17:01]

A friend of a friend (bit of a t0sser really) from Kilburn used to constantly bang on about how proud he was of his heritage and how great said countries were. He was half norwegian and half australian, according to him some of the most romantic countries on earth (he wasnt being ironic!). During a birthday party at the Pavillion we had a disagreement which ended up continuing outside, which led our friend in common to give me updates on that chaps life from time to time.
His mother died and he found out that he wasnt Norwegian at all, his mother was part of Germany's Red Army Faction (aka Baader—Meinhof Gang) and had gone on the lamb in England. He subsequently found loads of family in Germany he never knew he had.
A year later his father dies and he finds out he wasnt Australian either but English. If youre ever drinking in Kilburn and bump into some pillock banging on about how great it is to be German and English thatll be him.
I just enjoy this type of stuff so much as it hust goes to prove that in the great scheme it means bupkis. |

where in Jozi were you??? its not that bad if youre in the northern suburbs.
central jozi can be pretty hairy at times, walking from Park station up constitution hill on news years eve was up there. we ended the night amongst the hillbillys in the east rand. From one extreme to the other [Post edited 10 Nov 2021 14:58]

I dunno, my wife taught in west acton which is pretty much ealing and she had a few rangers in her class. the previous teacher left a load of rangers posters etc in his desk |

When I was a child living in Hamburg I never really appreciated how close the wall was (about an hours drive), we did at times have sirens go off in my neighbourhood which were there in case of the Soviet invasion.
My Mum had friends in the Army based in West Berlin and going to visit them was a real pain in the backside, all of the checks etc.
My grandmothers family fled to Germany from Poland to the North of Germany, once the wall came down and we visited her old town she was in tears looking at what had happened to the place. I remember seeing loads and I mean loads of Red Army soldiers milling around the streets smoking fags and drinking with seemingly nothing to do. Some looked pretty underfed too.
I know a couple that managed to escape the old east not long before the wall came down actually. This is quite the story:

In Budapest I met a Romanian from Transylvania who spoke perfect German and Hungarian, when I asked how come he had such a good grasp of both of those languages he mentioned that his family were ethnically German and Hungarian and that the Treaty of Trianon trapped his family in Romania. |
