How was that allowed to happen ?

I saw him with his mate Alan MIller another conspiracy loon in golden grove.

How embarrassing for the club and owner (present today) to see this political nonsene outside the club door.

Many jobs are important and farmers should pay their taxes like everyone else.

Joiedevivre, the suggested amount to be raised over five years by the increase in employers N I is £25 billion ie £5 billion a year.

Total annual government income in 2024 was £1.1 trillion, therefore by any sensible metric what they are about to achieve is indeed a minor tax adjustment.

Out of interest and by way of a comparison. It’s suggested that raising the basic rate of Income Tax by 1p would have increased government annual revenue by £8 billion.

Reference emigration to Sunnier Climes. I suggest most people who take this route are retired and even if they remained in the UK wouldn’t pay N I and nor would their previous employers.

Of course, raising income tax by 1p would have been an infinitely more sensible solution.

Employers would still have given pay rises and would still have been looking to recruit.

But Starmer and Reeves decided the political embarrassment of doing a blatant U-turn from their manifesto was a bigger crime than tanking the economy and bringing on inflation and a recession.

They have of course instead done more subtle U-turns.

"No increases in tax for working people".

Sainsbury's have used the Employer NIC increase as a convenient hook/excuse for getting rid of a business that has been losing money for several years.

Unless you shop in Sainsbury's you're not going to go there for tea/coffee/pastry/breakfast etc.

It was, as you full well know Pat, mentioned as a comparison and not as you suggest an alternative solution.

There’s an old expression which goes something like “ To govern is to choose “ and that’s what the incoming government ( that you say you voted for ) have done.

They have chosen to increase employers N I contributions and I’m afraid that going forward, it’s simply something that you are going to have to accept.

Much like the rest of us your only option now is to wait four odd years and express your displeasure by voting for someone else. That’s how the system works my friend.

In the meantime, as I previously suggested to you, there is next to no chance of the sky falling in or the world coming to an end caused by Reeves making a very minor tax adjustment.

We will still be able to go to the pub, eat out and waste our money following the Saints.

SO if employers would have given pay rises (assuming income tax increased and not em'er NIC) why would that have been more affordable?

Wages and tax and not drivers of inflation. They are products of the economy and they get measured in terms of RPI etc, but are not in the arithmetic of inflation.

Recession is a product of more than one quarter of economic stagnation or retardation. etc will be a factor there (higher wages means higher prices) but it is one of thousands of items and on its own not likely to move the dial.

And Council tax is not a tax - it's a duty or impost because it comes from legislation which permits local and not national control.

I'm not quite sure how you can say wages are not a driver of inflation.

As a key cost for businesses, it's obviously a driver of inflation.

If wages go up, then as sure as eggs are eggs, prices will go up. It's a simple rule of economics, as you yourself have said in your 3rd paragraph.

The increase in the National Minimum Wage in April is highly inflationary, as to keep pay hierarchies in place, businesses will be under pressure to pay similar percentage increases to staff higher rungs up the ladder.

And when this doesn't add up, it will be those at the lowest end who lose out.

Of course, Mark, my friend, and as you well know, governing involves making tough choices. It is essential to critically evaluate the impact of those choices on everyday people like you. We must consider the repercussions for both businesses and employees, potentially affecting economic stability and public service funding, as well as wages and job security. You mention waiting for the next election to express dissatisfaction. However, it is crucial to voice concerns now, as ongoing dialogue can influence future policies and decisions. We must avoid the five-year parliamentary and economic yo-yo cycle, bringing boom and bust, a microcosm of which being Hollywood56's shreddies up and down on a five-minute cycle at the docks, bringing an untold number of bums and busted nuts, and also best avoided.

Wages are not part of the official calculation and whilst, yes I agree that higher wages fed into product prices, will drive inflation, they are not actually an official measure.
