Singing "We hate Nottingham Forest etc, a staple for all football supporters bar Forest in the 70's & 80's it seems to have died out at some stage, good to hear it being sung again

Me and @ ShirtNumbers sung this in the last couple seasons of the Itchen. PatfromPoole may have possibly joined in, most didn’t.

Hating mustn’t be saintly.

I will sing anything that isn’t a Scousers song.

Hence no chapel in 1885 nonsense will ever be muttered by me.

Our group brought this back pre covid mostly to deeply confused looks from younger fans who couldn’t work out why we hated Nottingham forest.

This wasnt a scousers song as you so eloquently put it, no one knows who actually started it but it was sung by every club bar Forest back in the day.

I agree, Nick. In the 60s and 70s especially it was, along with You'll Never Walk Alone, the most popular song for fans of nearly all clubs, including Saints. It wasn't that Nottingham Forest were particularly unpopular in the '60s, but just a case of their name having the right number of syllables to fit the song. Forest did have their own version of it. They used the name of another team. I think it was West Bromwich Albion.

One of the high points at the Dell was when the whole ground held their scarves aloft and sang You'll Never Walk Alone at the Mick Channnon Testimonial. Of course we also sang it, along with the Nottingham Forest song, when we were at Wembley in the 70s.

Nowadays though, one of the most popular songs at all clubs, except Pompey, seems to be OWTS. I've heard Liverpool fans singing it and It's even sung at Serie A games. Italian fans also still sing Yellow Submarine, which I've never found particularly inspiring, even when we sang, "We all live at the back of Milton Road."

Most of the football songs sung today started on Merseyside: a tradition which goes back to the 1960s.

A scouse involving song:

Take a bow-legged chicken from the Liverpool Kop,
And he walks with a wiggle and walks with a hop,
With a hand grenade and a walking stick,
We are the Milton Boot Boys

You may have misread this. I don't think Pat was calling that song a 'scousers song' but rather the new 'Allez Allez Allez' sh1t that has unfortunately emerged.

Matt Busby said to Berti Mee,
Have you heard of the north bank highbury?

Bert said no, i don't think so,
But i've heard of the Milton
Aggro...

Hi Pat. Many clubs have their own version of this song as well . Does it really matter which fans started it ? We moan when we don’t have any songs and we complain when we get a new one which thousands of other fans also sing for their respective clubs. I don’t see a problem with it tbh.

my main problem is that it's factually incorrect, the chapel wasn't added to st mary's church until 1886, a year after Southampton football club was formed.

So therefor it was started in a boys club associated with the church and not the chapel, making the entire song TECHNICALLY WRONG, and as we all know veracity is the most important part of football songs.

I suspect that, as with one or two others on this esteemed forum, I am becoming more curmudgeonly in my old age.

Besides, FranniesTache has just rendered the chant illegal on the grounds of false statements.

I actually have a working theory we're partly responsible for it sadly, and as much as i hate the use of the scouse song it definitely borrows from us moaning on social media people didn't reference the clubs history enough.

I did have a chuckle though when we played Spurs and our fans sang "we sing our songs", then instantly followed it up by singing Allez Allez.

Self awareness is not a strong point in THE NORTHAM WAILING WALL

My issue with our "one song" is that every other team seem to have nicked it, particularly Spurs, but now it's turning up everywhere!
