Cifuentes and Dunne Nominated For Monthly Awards on 09:29 - Jan 9 by gazza1 | That is why most 'stats' are a load of old crap...... |
Indeed I hate stats. They can mean any thing that anybody wishes them to mean. That's how I knew Beale was a crock of shit when most people were still worshipping at his feet

Cifuentes and Dunne Nominated For Monthly Awards on 10:51 - Jan 10 by Paddyhoops | Poor Jimmy can’t get a game for probably the worst Ireland team in generations. He’s criminally underrated at the moment. |
Well to be fair Dunne is on top of his game right now but that hasn't always been the case. As Clive mentioned in his recent New Year's preview, this time last year he was chronically out of form. Also when fit, Coleman was going first choice RB and when not, Chedoze has been used as a wing back to great effect. We also have very strong CB's playing at a higher level or higher up the Champ than QPR. If you look at Ireland's results (England excepted ) they don't concede many. So the defence is not the main issue. If Dunne played in any position further forward , he would be a shoe in on current form. [Post edited 10 Jan 13:49]

Should have been Marti or Rohl at Sheffield Weds. What they are both doing with limited resources is fantastic compared to the resources Farke and Parker have at Leeds and Burnley

I expect the cows have seen the stats on how many Americans are shot by Americans and are just getting their retaliation in early.

Cifuentes and Dunne Nominated For Monthly Awards on 09:48 - Jan 9 by BrianMcCarthy | I use them a lot. I love them. But they're only as good as the input, same as opinion polls are only as good as the questions. Worse, putting stats into an algorithim to calculate a match score for a player can be dangerous. I want to know how many passes Gazza landed correctly, and the stats tell me 63. Job done. But if the stats tell me that he lost possession five times and they don't tell me whether all five were in front of our own goal or whether all five were excellent crosses that were very well defended, then that's my fault because I didn't ask the stats to tell me that. So the algorithim takes a bashing, and Gazza gets a totally unjust 6.4. In the Luton game, the stats say that Morgan landed 31 passes and misplaced 10. That doesn't look great and it bashes the hell out of the fancy algorithim, but it doesn't tell us how many of those passes were good forward passes that were just well defended. A good analyst goes back over the video time and time again and chats to management, and then chats to Morgan and most likely tells him to ignore the stats in this case and to keep playing positive forward passes, and maybe remind him that Ray Wilkins was a superb passer and he never hit 100% either. Defensively: I doubt Paolo Maldini's match ratings would have been accurate either. When he played, so often the oppo midfielder looked up and saw Maldini covering his man expertly and decided not to pass there. Job done by Maldini yet again, but the fancy algorithim takes another bashing, because we didn't ask the stats to record great marking. |
I think Wilkins played three misplaced passes in his time here. Each was accompanied by a collective sharp intake of breath.
