Next manager and reasons why... 17:17 - Aug 18 with 85054 views | Sheffield_dale | Shame it didn't work for Robbie. IMO he didn't get the team prepared for the season and unfortunately deserves to go. I can understand what he wanted to achieve with the formation but didn't coach them well enough/quick enough to put it into action. We would be too far adrift before things clicked into place. So, who do we want next. I'll throw in a suggestion. Dave Artell. Steadily built up a Crewe team on a low budget and got promoted. Not perfect by any means but he would be within our budget and has decent L2 experience and success.

Next manager and reasons why... on 11:42 - Aug 19 by Brierls | I'm not sure about his record in recent times, he was a bit of a disaster at Ipswich and Stoke. I suppose he'd be a name that gets a bit of attention. I bet we haven't had a manager that's scored against the Faroe Islands before! |
Couple of Dale connections at that game, 1 - I was there and 2 - former loanee Kevin Kyle played. For a more tenuous link…the aforementioned Graham Alexander was on the bench. [Post edited 19 Aug 2022 12:12]

No managerial experience maybe but he must have learned a hell of a lot under some good managers during his playing career.

Sorry No and not being disrespectful to Jonah but we need an Experienced Manager in and stop getting inexperienced people in.

Agree it's unlikely we'll find a Keith Hill that comes in and instantly transforms us. But a Steve Parkin type to steady the ship and improve the team over a couple of seasons.

Not too sure, he's not been in his current job at Buxton long having taken over in May, and with them having a good budget for the level, he's a reasonable shot at relative success this season. It'd be a massive step up too.
Next manager and reasons why... on 20:05 - Aug 19 with 4389 views | PassmondsBlue | I think we need to forget the idea that a youth team manager can come in and bring the next wonder kid with him so we can cash in, and ali will then be OK, What we need now is a tried and tested manager who has one task - WIN FOOTBALL MATCHES. Anyway back to the topic, last night at about 5:45pm Grant Holt was driving away from Rochdale along Broadway, happy to share the photo of him in his car if people don't believe me. Not sure if he has the experience needed but he is a winner and knows how to win football matches.

He’s got a very good job outside of football so I’d be staggered if he gave up both roles to take on a full time job that could see him unemployed if he didn’t do very well quite quickly.

On reading this thread probably best to give you a heads up on the guy. Arrived in Jan 21 with us 11th out of 12 on goal difference. Remit was to keep us up which he did. Many of us weren't too bothered about what we were watching, we knew we were in a survival dogfight. Needless to say we missed out on our top 6 split by only a few points but despite that were able to secure safety with a few games left. Seemed to buy well but late on in the summer, extended a few players who should have been released but we put that down to covid and not sure how the season would pan out. Had a not too shabby first half of the season based on results but the football was awful to watch. We nicked goals and then went 5 or 6 at the back. The talisman playmaker left in January and he was offered an extension to 2025 based on the fact we had the highest points tally in the league outside Rangers and Celtic in the calendar year. Then the rotten run and "tombola" selection. 4th at Christmas we didn't win in the league until April, 11 games without a win but we inexplicably qualified for the top six as those around us couldn't get any consistency. In a feat still a surprise to us we got European Qualification. Players in form were dropped, many who did well sidelined only for their replacements to not justify their gametime. It was demoralising for the support and players. It was ugly, uninspiring stuff, we scored 3 goals or more in 1 league match and once in the league cup against a lower league team. However he fulfilled his remit (on paper) and went into the new season. We got Sligo in Q2 of the ECL and were beaten 1-0 at home and 2-0 away, a lost lucrative next game and suffered a major upset. He got the jettisoned the following day. We were unprepared and lacking decent transfer activity. Rumours have since surfaced the board withheld funds as they wanted them for the next guy. Make of that what you like. During his tenure he was secretive, autocratic and froze out many players, including the club captain/international. The talisman playmaker made a point of saying training at his new club was more "focused". His brand of football will make your eyes bleed and I fear we'll be a few months to undo what he did to the dressing room and un coach his dire tactics. I don't think many of our players enjoyed going to work for the majority of his tenure. [Post edited 20 Aug 2022 0:40]

Thanks for that, unity in the dressing room is something that we definitely need. I also think experience will be key to our next appointment, we don't have time for a rookie manager to start learning on the job because if we hit a bad run over the next month or two we will be up sh'*ts creek without a paddle and a manager with no experience of turning it around, what do we do then? I expect a reaction today from the players and i don't agree the game is a free hit after losing all four on the spin, today is a very important game. If we suddenly start winning games ( new manager bounce) and witness a different style of play then condideration must be given to Jim keeping the job but to my mind that would still be a massive gamble, our last two managers have been new to management and look how we have suffered. From a financial perspective Jim would tick the boxes but i hope those in the Boardroom aren't swayed by that. A manager who has dealt with pressure and knows how to turn around a losing run, deal with disruptive players and has experience in the transfer market would be my preference. I think the January transfer window could also be vital, somebody who knows how to shape shift and call in favours etc would be massive, for a rookie manager all that would be a new experience, it's all too big a gamble for me because that period of the season could be crucial. Stockdale was a nice fella but it didn't mean anything when it came to winning football matches. It's going to be a interesting couple of weeks. If Jim smashes it then everybody at the club wins, good luck to him today. [Post edited 20 Aug 2022 7:52]

Sorry TS, but if you could clarify from that: if Big Jim gets the team organised and starts picking up points, are you for retaining him as manager, or not? A 'free hit' game (or shot in cricket) is where you have nothing to lose. There's a difference between that and not expecting an immediate turnaround in form. That's me clarifying the point i made yesterday. Are you expecting that to happen?

If Big Jim hits the ground running and we start picking up points then he suddenly has to come into the managerial equation, at the moment i understand why he is caretaker manager but apart from that i don't see any other credentials apart from the fact that he seems like a really nice fella. We've witnessed shocking defending for the last few years and Jim has been part and parcel of that he has been no better than anybody else. I'm trying to take emotion out of my thinking because this next appointment is probably sh*t or bust regarding our time in the EFL, that's how serious it is. If we see a upturn in results, a different style and mentality on the pitch then yes give Jim the managers job, he would have earned the opportunity. I still think it would be a massive gamble though but one that the decision makers at the club could justify and i would fall into line with that. To just appoint him as manager and not expect a immediate turnaround in form as you suggest with a free hit wouldn't be right. Swindon just like us are in poor form, i'm expecting to see a big reaction today, especially if the players want Big Jim to get the job. They should be wringing sweat out of their shirts at the end of the game, that's not too much to expect surely, a bit of effort? We don't have time for 'free hits' and we have three big points to lose today so no i don't agree with that. There is enough experience in the squad to go to Swindon today and pick up our first point. I'm not anti Jim, i'm more interested in what is best for the club and i've had a bellyful of waiting for rookie managers to stop trying to re-invent the game with ridiculous tactics and formations. We gave Stockdale the benefit of the doubt and he stil continued to complicate things. I hope that's gone some way to clarifying things for you, if not then we can agree to disagree. Yes, i'm not expecting anything on Tuesday except a battling performance and spirit. The lack of effort and desire at Stevenage and in other games is something that can't be condoned anymore. I'm assuming Jim has been involved in coaching under Stockdale so he must have seen the things we've seen, that's why i'm expecting a big improvement today, just busting a gut to win would be great to see, that's not expecting too much. I'd echo that. 433, rarely won the midfield duel. Often outclassed and Turpin'd many of our points. Our striker is Kevin van Veen who you may know from Scunny can be class one minute then you see nothing of him for 3 games. We switched to 5 at the back almost as a last throw of the dice when out of ideas and actually started to play football and make the most of our international captain who plays far better as a wingback over a right back. It was all a bit different from when he first arrived, he was quick to make changes and often drastic ones. At the end subs were left far too late to influence probably because the amount of players that were in his good books was small. He's divisive and rubs people up the wrong way. He also holds grudges. HIs man management is appalling. He did probably enhance a few players but also stagnated and regressed a few too. The biggest heads gone moment was at Ibrox, 2 nil down looking like its gonna be a cricket score. The three subs he made at half time were crazy. However we pulled two back and contributed to them realising that the league chase was probably beyond them. That game for the guys he put out and the result will be forever an enigma for our club. Gary Neville has since conveyed he shouldn't have sacked him at Salford. We all wish he hadn't too. If you want more of a feeling, steelmenonline is one of our forums, Alexander has a 31 page thread dedicated to the man, the myth, the legend.
Next manager and reasons why... on 13:58 - Aug 20 with 2866 views | TomRAFC | Alexander has a good win rate but was clearly divisive at Motherwell. I don't know if he was the same elsewhere. As a club, I don't think we can afford a divisive character at the moment. I know Artell got a few touchline bans but seemed to be very club oriented. Certainly sways me more towards him.

Next manager and reasons why... on 14:29 - Aug 20 with 2791 views | SuddenLad | Please stop suggesting Graham Alexander. Please. Dale isn't a good fit for him. He seems to be a manager who has cliques and is divisive. We don't want that. Simon Gauge has just said that we have had over 100 applications, including former Championship managers, some from people already in a job and some from former L1 and L2 managers. Let's take time to sift through the applications and select carefully. The next appointment is the most important in many a year.
