Chest Pains 22:03 - Feb 1 with 7712 viewsBrianMcCarthy

Spent this afternoon and much of the evening in A&E after my GP referred me due to chest pains.

Full range of heart and blood tests quickly taken and sent home with the all-clear. The pains were caused by a virus, it seems.

Excellent health service - calm, efficient and friendly. Can't praise them enough.

Get checked out folks!!!

I'm glad to see that you are recovering well Brian, and Myke. I wish I had done the same as you and sought immediate treatment when I started a hacking cough and chest pains around 15 months ago. I self medicated for weeks and it didn't seem to be getting better. A trip to the doctor ended up with a 10 day course of anti biotics which barely touched it so I was given a much stronger AB for 14 days during which time the coughing subsided to an occasional spasm but much better. Within days of the course ending it was back as bad as ever so a second course was prescribed. Same result as before, as soon as the course finished the symptoms were back as strong as ever. By this time we were in C-19 lockdown and over a period of a few months I had heart and lung scans, an ECG and a MRI. I was eventually diagnosed as having a virus borne bronchopneumonia which has left me with permanent heart and lung damage and being forced onto to tablets for the rest of my life. This all coincided with a worsening osteoarthritis and patellar bursitis in my left knee which means I am almost unable to walk at times and is quite fücking depressing at times. I don't know what I would have done without being able to post on here and a few other QPR groups as I really miss the people I used to meet up with at games. I realise that I am one of the lucky ones still alive but it is hard sometimes.
TL/DR: first sign of anything nasty, make sure you get checked out, as the quicker they can get to it, the quicker they can sort it.

Hope you're okay Brian. Our Health Service is second to none. Spent 7 of the last 11 days in hospital with a suspected stroke. I had every test and scan done imaginable. All by friendly efficient staff despite the times we are in. Not a stroke apparently because all tests clear. Only downside is they haven't figured out what it is

Glad you're OK, always frustrating when they don't find anything, but as long as you're well, that's the main thing.

Hey Brian / Myke,

First post in ages - I've relocated to the Brecon Beacons and have been lying low (definitely the only R in the village).

Glad to hear you are both okay. I made my move here precisely because I was starting to fear the pressure of my job may result in something bad happening. I have less money (for sure) but amazing scenery on my doorstep.

Can't wait to get back to HQ when we are all able to - stay well everyone.

That's the kind of move I'd like to consider in the next 5 years or so - realistically unlikely before that finances wise, unless the Euromillions syndicate finally comes through. Few things to eh pay off beforehand. But the ubiquitous 'WFH' has changed a lot of things if course.

Anyway, glad to hear Brian and others are OK. I had a bit of a pulava Easter before last - briefly admitted for ongoing palpitations and pain, walked around with a heart monitor for 3 days, all that business. Seems it was related to my hiatus hernia which I'm still in the waiting list to fix.

Does make you think though - weigh up what's important and what's absolutely not.

Some good advice on here and sadly through this period of COVID there’s the tendency to keep hospitals and doctors off the priority list.Sadly l have seen the consequences of this near to home and it’s heartbreaking when you find out it’s too late and could be preventable.Good health to you all and good on you Brian for making the right choice last night.

Hello mate, Glad to hear you've made the move - hope it's going well - it's a beautiful part of the world. My wife spent 3 years in a very prestigious role at work, which was an incredible opportunity work-wise, but saw her working 12 hour days and crying her eyes out every night. It wasn't much fun for either of us. Biffed it off and hasn't looked back. Now in an unglamorous role, but loves the company and loves the work. We (probably) only get one life and it's relatively short, so there's no point fu cking about doing something that makes you miserable, if you have an alternative. Often easier said than done, but sometimes you just have to be bold. Your health and happiness should always come first!

Esox - sorry you've been having a tough time of it. A really sh it year to be going through it too. Things will get back to normal, and you'll get some of your old routine back. Spring's on the way - vaccines on the way. Hopefully your health will improve. Keep the faith.

I don't post that often but, having had a heart attack at a football match one evening in 2018 at Aldershot as I left the ground. I went with friends who drove me home after I insisted I was ok and to drive me home. When I got home I could barely get up the stairs to go to bed, my wife heard me come in as she was awake, she took one look at me and said what is wrong with you, you look as white as a sheet. Anyhow she took me straight to A&E in Dartford just after midnight, I was seen straight away, I was then driven to St Thomas's by ambulance. If my wife hadn't insisted on taking me to the hospital, I probably wouldn't be here today. I had a lot of blocked arteries and ended up having six stents fitted, surgery wasn't an option as I was full of blood thinners, and they couldn't afford to wait. So, as Brian says, if in doubt, go to the hospital, and what great nurses you have to look after you.

Depressingly, haven't really found a good substitute for cheese Steve. If you know of one PLEEEEASE let me know!

I've dabbled with Haloumi, which I liked, but it's only slightly less bad for me, so not going down that route.

I've been dabbling in trying to create something interesting out of Tofu, cooking it in 'healthier' (when compared to dairy fats) olive oil and other ingredients in the hope that some flavour might permeate the white rubbery pap. So far, a seemingly impossible task...

So it's marmite on corn cakes - an edible form of expanded polystyrene with added roughage. After a month on them, I'm coming to quite like them. There's some evidence that cheese consumption can be addictive and I can well believe it. I'm more or less off it after 6 weeks or so and find abstention increasingly less painful.

But I still get a twinge of a craving around 10.00pm for some simple Nairn's oatcakes and a slab of mature strong cheddar or stilton with my glass of red...

Just to add, I started following QPR aged 5-6 and the first player I remember was a George Whitelaw, who was a Scot. I moved to Kent in 1976 and went every Saturday until the mid eighties. I've been to a few odd games( with my son who I converted into a QPR fan) when we were last in the Premier.

Glad you guys are all OK. Just to briefly add my own experience of a heart attack 18 months ago . I really thought it was was just indigestion. Only my pulse was really fast too. Thing is, when it's happening, you go into a state of denial. I didn't WANT to be having a heart attack, because it was just so bloody inconvenient. We had 25 people coming round for a BBQ that afternoon, apart from anything else. And the drive was due to be dug up and re-paved, starting the following day. But wishing it wasn't happening didn't work, so I dialled 999 and they turned up in about 10 minutes flat, and saved my life.

I'm in Gravesend, RVP near Cascades Leisure Centre. I'm a Ebbsfleet Utd follower as well now, ironically they played a QPR X11 last night. Fleet won 1-0.

Haha, know it well. Our motorcycle group rents out one of the car parks at Ebbsfleet International 3 or 4 times year to run advanced ridings skills courses.

I'm a Tonbridge Angels follower - we've got Ebbsfleet at home later this month... :)
