4-4-2 on 19:08 - Jan 1 by kropotkin41 | Harry himself said that we left ourselves open in the Second Half!! It's nonsense - Donny scored in the first half!! I mean for gawd's sake how many more times do we need to see the same frustrating game plan get us nowhere fast? |
It got us to the top of the league!

4-4-2 on 13:21 - Jan 2 by stansleftfoot | No! Our lack of pace throughout makes 4:5:1 almost unworkable... just with 10 minutes of Hoilet and 80 minutes of Phillips shows that you just have to have Pace.... Harry didn't put this squad together with 4:5:1 in mind, I think he thought he'd have Zamora, Austin, Johnson to pick a 4:4:2 for. I think he needs a Midfield player who can get about a bit and a quick mobile striker....I think he'll get Carlton Cole and he should be buying Shane Long, i think we will continue to carry Niko Kranjcar and we need a player on loan like that Abdoun who played for Leicester who can put himself about in Midfield. |
Disagree with that, all his recent signings have been exactly with 4-2-3-1 in mind. Carroll, Kranjcar, Oneil, Benyoun etc none of these are 4--4-2 players, he would have known Zamora was a crock from last season and he tried to flog AJ on deadline day. Everything points to trying to build a team around Carroll and Kranjcar we started the season 4-4-2 and as soon as deadline day passed we switched to 4-2-3-1 only its not an attacking exciting one like we played under Warnock its a dour defensive one. As I said before we have been as bad and boring playing 4-4-2 and 4-5-1 the biggest problems have been the injury problems and form of Hoilett, and the failure of Kranjcar to be the next "Adel" which he is not. How long its taken Phillips to make an impact and Onhuras injury which has left us playing an old and slow centre back pairing and therefore the whole team is playing far far too deep

4-4-2 on 19:12 - Jan 1 by baz_qpr | We've been as bad playing 4-4-2 as 4-5-1 this season, its also a bit of an issue if you can't keep two strikers fit. For what its worth the difference second half was that finally the back four pushed up high which meant the midfield could get forward and support and the wingers could get further forward. In addition HR must have put a rocket up Bartons arse and told him to stop saving himself for Everton and start playing properly |
Your right playing a high line gives the midfield options to support the front two, just a shame they cant shoot very well, the amount of times i wish we had a Rowlands running on to the ball ive lost count.

4-4-2 on 17:24 - Jan 1 by YorkRanger | We were very open second half though. We rightly changed it and needed to press on but not sure whether 4 4 2 is the right answer. |
Were we ? I seem to recall being opened up much more in the first half than the second. Green only had to deal with one long range effort in the second half. What formation were we playing with our biggest win this season ?? Plus we havnt lost playing 442 this season.
4-4-2 on 14:40 - Jan 2 with 535 views | DylanP | Funny argument this. People are saying we were wide open in the second half playing 4-4-2. But the facts of the game don't really support that. Donny scored in the first half. Not only that, but they created a load of chances in the first half. They could easily have been 3-0 up at half time. In contrast, the did NOT score in the second half and their chances we limited. With only Austin up front, the Doncaster LB and RB were pushing up the field we spent long periods pinned back in our own half. When we did have the ball, we didn't have the speed to get back in time to respond to their counterattacks (which was how their goal was scored). In a 451 formation, Austin can come back for the ball, but he cannot go wide as it leaves the middle of the park empty--our midfield simply doesn't have the speed to get there in time. In the second half, AJ was linking up wide, drawing defenders with him and leaving space for Simpson, BAE, and Phillips to make mischief. We had much more space and time to operate and as a result had more chances. It is not a coincidence that both goals came from overlapping runs and crosses from our fullbacks given space to operate in by AJ's movement. True, AJ probably doesn't have the legs for a full 90 minutes. So, as others have said, play Hitch in the first half and AJ in the second half (or the other way round). Or bring someone in during the transfer window to partner with Austin. [Post edited 2 Jan 2014 14:54]

4-4-2 on 15:50 - Jan 2 with 512 views | derbyhoop | There is nothing wrong with playing 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1, per se. And I'm not sure AJ contributed that much for people to claim that we played better because it was 4-4-2. When 4-5-1 is played and midfielders go past the lone striker, it can be an attacking option, built on a solid base. When you have a team packed with 30 year old midfielders, who never had that much pace when they were 20, then you're going to struggle to play it effectively. And, if you are going to play 4-4-2 you need 2 fit strikers, plus at least 1 back up on the bench. We've got 1 fit striker and 2 other players who make up 3/4 of asecond striker.

We're more of a passing side under HR and quite a lot of it is very laborious. Warnocks team was more direct and put the opposing defence under more pressure.
