Growing Old Part 704 - Coffee 09:58 - Oct 11 with 4805 viewsBrianMcCarthy

One cup and I'm:

a) Wired. I mean seriously wired. I go on a big babble.
b) Dehydrated. Think 'animal carcass in the Sahara'.
c) Unable to sleep for 12 hours.

Anyone else? Is it an age thing?

If medicine is improving so much, how come I can't eat or drink anything I like any more.

Have you changed coffee types? Maybe your beans are too darkly roasted or something?

I'm planning on buying a new coffee maker next week. Rock & Roll.

I don't drink it at home, Bklyn. Just buy one if I'm out and about. I know nothing about coffee, really. 'Tis far from coffee I was raised! :)

Didn’t start drinking coffee until I was 49. Now got a nespresso coffee maker (for the smaller pods) and a milk frother attached. Best kitchen toy I’ve ever bought. Start the day with a flat white and then another for breakfast. Went out with my other half yesterday morning and ended up in Costa having an Americano with an extra shot. Drink for the flavour, the more bitter the better. The caffeine doesn’t seem to affect me, although prior to liking coffee I did drink a lot of tea which evidently has more caffeine in it than coffee. Tip for a line who has a nespresso machine that takes the smaller pod, but them in Lidl’s. 20 pods for £2.79. Have a variety of strengths as well.

Think you're right Brian, it is definitely an age thing.
Can no longer drink coffee before a round of golf as I can stand over a putt and feel my hands shaking from the caffeine.
And as for all the things I can't seem to eat any more. I get wind just from looking at some of them.

One cup a day, first in the morning, does for me. But it has to be Fairtrade whole beans, ground by myself, filtered using water just off the boil, without milk or sugar.

Consider your water to coffee ratio. If you're sensitive to caffeine but still want to drink coffee try a filter coffee, lighter roast, something Ethiopian perhaps? Avoid espresso based coffees.

I'm on a massive health kick at the moment, off the booze, gym five or six times a week, healthy eating etc, lost about 12 kgs in a few months. The one thing I need to address now is the unholy amount of coffee I drink, about 6 strong cups a day.

When I was drinking I realised that quite often I'd get a terrible headache the day after, not from the drink but from caffeine withdrawal, because I never drink coffee after drinking, I guess because of the dehydration.

Coffee is like a religion here in Australia, especially Sydney and Melbourne. I buy at least one every day.

I hope I don't get the the stage where I can't enjoy it any more, but if I do it will at least save me money 😃☕

‘…how come I can't eat or drink anything I like any more..’

I felt exactly this way when coffee started having similar effects on me.

However a lot of cafes & restaurants do very good decaff versions of their various coffees (Cappuccinos, Lattes etc) if you ask.

So you can enjoy the taste without the side effects.

Growing old and get not so subtly introduced to Acid Reflux. Talk about how to put a halt to enjoying one of the finer things in life, eating. Bastards!

Coffee and me do not agree. Something to do with your DNA not liking stuff apparently. Picky eaters nonsense.

Coffee addict - minimum three double espressos a day but four is probably the average. Partly because I like it, partly because cocaine in the office is frowned upon and partly it’s a good hunger suppressant. Cut it out entirely when I had bad insomnia for many months and it just made me more miserable. Now sleeping well even if I have the last one too late but tend to have one after lunch at 2-3 and all good. The volume of soft drinks people get through they probably don’t realise how much caffeine they’re putting away in the evening.

Coffee addict too. Any Danes out there might be amused to know that i have 12 packets of Irma Blue Kaffe shipped over from relations every 4 months or so - nothing else comes close.

And to Brian's post, aged 60 i'm not getting that effect you are. I start the day with two cups of real coffee and then move onto instant (Clipper) until lunch time and then water thereafter until beer/wine o'clock.

Love coffee - always have one first thing. Thankfully caffeine doesn't have a huge effect on me but I am trying to have more decaff through the rest of the day.

Although I must admit on the face of it, coffee doesn't really taste that great if you think about it. And you could say the same for alcohol. Funny what our taste buds get conditioned to eh.

Now 76 I've almost kissed off coffee for good. It's effect on my bladder is way too powerful and potentially embarrassing.

I'm more partial to a strong cup of tea but usually have at least one coffee a day. Even when I've drunk multiple cups, I've never really noticed any effect.

I remembered an article that I read about differing caffeine levels in various coffee chain drinks:

"A new study has found that high street coffee chains have “huge” differences in the amount of caffeine served in popular drinks.

A medium cappuccino at Costa Coffee contains a “massive” 325mg of caffeine, almost five times the strength of the Starbucks version with a modest 66mg.

By contrast, Greggs and Pret A Manger also use significantly less caffeine in a cappuccino of the same size, at 197mg and 180mg respectively. Caffè Nero had the second lowest levels of caffeine after Starbucks in this drink specifically, containing between 110mg and 115mg.

The study also found that one single espresso from Pret A Manger contains 180mg of caffeine, or six times as much as its Starbucks counterpart. Pret’s filter coffee also contained the highest caffeine levels at 271mg, compared to 225mg at Greggs and 102mg at Starbucks.

The variations aren’t solely caused by the number of caffeine shots used. The two main types of coffee bean – Arabica and Robusta – have differing caffeine amounts as well as variations in tastes, with Arabica containing approximately half the quantity of caffeine.

With such a large disparity from one chain to another, customers have little idea how much caffeine they’re consuming. This can cause problems for people who are sensitive to caffeine, pregnant people or patients on certain stimulant medications.

The maximum recommended caffeine allowance is up 400mg per day. Pregnant people are advised to consume no more than 200mg, and children no more than between 45mg and 100mg per day."

My (2nd) Tassimo is on the go all day.

I was part of the 6 man R&D team that took the Tassimo from concept to global production and along with my normal mechanical design input I had to learn about coffee and what affects the end product in your cup.
Some tips I discovered along the way include keeping your beans in the freezer to prevent oxidation, and only using enough to produce a days worth of drinks. use 100% Arabica beans for the best balanced flavour, fine washed Brazilian Arabica is one of the best readily available.
The grind can have a profound effect on the extraction so if you have a bean to cup machine, experiment with the grind and note which settings give you the flavour and strength you prefer. The finer the grind the stronger the flavour, approx 1mm for espresso, 1.5 for for regular coffee.
Water temperature is very important to a good cup of coffee, it should be brewed between 80º-90º C and a dilution rate of around 12:1 gives a strong flavour, 20:1 a more rounded flavour.
From a personal viewpoint, I don't suffer from caffeine surges but I DO get strong headaches from staying away from coffee for more than a few days.

The grass is always greener.
