We get those possession stats up by staying in our own half. The closer you stay to your own goal, the fewer opposition players you have to contend with so the easier it is to keep possession. Sideways and backwards passes are easier to make than forward ones, where there are defenders waiting to intercept them. Our priority is to retain possession, not score goals. Under RM we continue to play this slow propaganda football with the vast majority of our possession in our own half and most of it near our own penalty area. Football is all about creating chances and scoring more goals than your opponents. To do that you need to progress the ball forward rapidly and with a purpose and get players between the lines as this will put pressure on opposition defenders leading to panic and mistakes. Until RM gets this he will be content to watch his side mount up the possession in areas that matter not one jot. He is a snake oil salesman and a fraud hiding behind this negative possession football which will get us nowhere. We are not suddenly going to find the holy grail under him and start creating and scoring for fun. This is the norm until we try a new manager with more tactical nous who brings some smarter coaches than RM's basic lot. | | | |
