Worse than Poortvliet? 11:07 - Sep 26 with 2239 viewssaints__fan__73

This stat made me laugh.

Remember the Championship relegation team from 08-09? The one where the club was heading hopelessly towards going into administration? The one where we were having to play players like Ryan Smith and Jake Thompson as we didn't have two pennies to rub together?

If we/when we lose to Leeds on Saturday we will have a worse points total after 9 league games than that team did.

We'll smash L2 with our last year of PL parachute payments.

Paul Wotton...Now there is a true leader of men..a proper defender ....God he was crap.

If you get relegated straight away from the Championship, do you still get the parachute payments in the following year??

Yeah, it's 3 years no matter what so we'll get the last one in L2.

In many ways this season reminds me of that season, loads of people ranting on the internet that a man who had played in a World Cup final was clueless about football

Poortvliet had an excuse. We had the worst squad in the league.

This season we have one of the best.

Re Paul Wotton he was POY and Capt at Plymouth and in one paper he was suggested as 'The One To Watch' for Saints.
Never lived up to that suggestion.

How was Bobby Moore’s managerial career?

Who said Poortvliet was clueless about football?

Maybe clueless about winning games of football as a manger but he did have a poor squad.

Martin has no such defence (pun intended).

Clearly not.

He was a very fine player, but not a manager.

As with Poortvliet.

My point was not whether Portvliet was a good manager or not, but whether he was clueless about football, good players may know a lot about the game, but that doesn't make them good managers.

In his case Poortvliet who was a good coach at youth and lower tier level in Holland was brought in to manage what was actually more or less a reserve side at St Mary's, he had no chance of success, his job was to get the team and club through a tough season so they could get debt off the books and regroup the following season.

There was no point in sacking him from this perspective no one was going to keep us up , although with 28 points from his 30 games in charge he wasn't doing a bad job,

You are saying Warnock would not have kept us up, after instilling some proper defensive discipline?

A highly questionable assertion if so....

There was no point in sacking him? Really?

You would have been happy to start out 1st L1 season with him as the boss then?

You really are losing the plot!

There was no point in sacking him mid season, by the end of the season we would either have escaped administration or been wound up, there was no point in spending money paying him off
