Match Preview: West Brom (H)

Blackpool will look to make it back-to-back victories at Bloomfield Road when they take on West Brom on Tuesday night.

The Seasiders continue to fight for survival in the Sky Bet Championship as the Baggies remain in the mix for a play-off place.

Stephen Dobbie picked up his first win as Interim Head Coach against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

One to Watch - John Swift:

The former Reading midfielder was bound to make an impact with West Brom and he has done such with five goals and seven assists. One of the most talented midfielders in the Sky Bet Championship, Swift will no doubt remain a pivotal figure for the remainder of the campaign.

The Manager - Carlos Corberan:

After staging a remarkable play-off bid with Huddersfield Town where they eventually lost to Nottingham Forest in the 2022 Sky Bet Championhip play-off final, Corberan resigned and took charge of Olympiakos. An unsuccessful stint in Greece saw him return to England with the Baggies where he has taken them from relegation candidates to a top-half side.

The Referee - Stephen Martin:

Martin has taken charge of 18 games so far this campaign, mainly in the Sky Bet Championship, handing out 70 yellow cards and three red cards in the process.

The official last took charge of the Seasiders in the 1-0 win over Swansea City in March 2022.

Team News:

James Husband is likely to miss the game following surgery on nerve damage suffered in the victory over Wigan Athletic. Tom Trybull, Rob After and Marvin Ekpiteta returned to training on Monday. Gary Madine and Jake Beesley will miss the remainder of the season through injury.

Match Preview | Blackpool v Albion

West Bromwich Albion will go in search of a second consecutive away victory at relegation-threatened Blackpool on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm).

The Baggies came from behind to win 2-1 at Stoke on Saturday - a result which boosted their Play-Off hopes heading into the final five fixtures.

Blackpool gave themselves a survival lifeline by beating bottom side Wigan Athletic 1-0 at Bloomfield Road, meaning they're now four points off safety with four games left.

Albion won the reverse clash 1-0 at The Hawthorns thanks to Okay Yokuslu's late strike on a night which saw Carlos Corberán claim his first triumph as Baggies boss.

Supporters inside and outside of the United Kingdom can watch Albion's match with Blackpool live on WBA TV.

Regular WBA Radio commentary duo Gez Mulholland and Andy Johnson will provide kick-by-kick coverage of the crucial clash from the Bloomfield Road press box.

Video passes can be purchased here for £10.

Regular updates will also be posted across the club's social media channels throughout the night.

Our opponents

Blackpool have had a difficult season in the Sky Bet Championship but are still in with a shout of saving their second-tier status.

The Seasiders, who sit four points adrift of safety, have four games remaining, starting with the visit of the Baggies on Tuesday.

They play two games at Bloomfield Road against the Albion and Millwall, while also facing Birmingham City and Norwich away from home.

Blackpool's 1-0 triumph over Wigan at the weekend was just their second league win in ten matches and ended a sequence of four straight defeats.

Stephen Dobbie, a man who had four loan spells with Blackpool during his playing career, was put in caretaker charge until the end of the season on Saturday, April 8, replacing Mick McCarthy.

Tuesday's hosts have only lost two of their last 10 home fixtures in all competitions (W4, D4) and they'll be desperate for another positive result by the seaside in midweek as they attempt to claw back more ground on the teams above them.

From the Albion Archive

Albion scored three times in six second-half minutes to record an important 3-1 victory at Blackpool in April 2008.

Ben Burgess had put the hosts ahead in the opening 45, but strikes from Kevin Phillips (2) and Ishmael Miller earned the Baggies a big three points on their way to securing the Championship title that year.

One for the stattos

Albion have a strong recent record against the Seasiders with seven victories to their name in the 10 meetings this century.

Blackpool's only triumph against the Baggies in 90 minutes during that time was a 2-1 success at Bloomfield Road in the Premier League 13 years ago.

The overall head-to-head record sees Albion on 44 wins, Blackpool on 31, with 17 draws being played out too.

Ticket details

Tickets are on general sale for the Baggies' trip to Bloomfield Road.

Colours for the road

Albion will turn out in their home kit at Blackpool on Tuesday night.

The last time the Baggies played in navy-blue-and-white stripes on their travels was back at Watford towards the end of February.

Prediction:

Team: 4-1-4-1

Get a settled side and play the same line up?
Don't change a winning team?

It'd be way too risky to go into a match against West Brom without a recognised ball winner.

Blackpool team news and predicted XI to face West Brom: Star man touch and go for Dobbie

Blackpool welcome West Brom to Bloomfield Road with the two sides desperate to pick up three points, but for very different reasons.

The Tangerines gave themselves a lifeline in their bid to survive relegation as they beat basement side Wigan Athletic 1-0 at the weekend. The win sees Stephen Dobbie’s side move to within four points of safety.

West Brom also kept their hopes alive of achieving their goals this season, with a 2-1 comeback win away at Stoke City last time out ending a run of four games without a win and moved them to within three points of the play-offs.

Blackpool team news

Blackpool’s interim boss Dobbie has been dealt a triple blow ahead of the West Brom clash. Defender James Husband is confirmed to be out after he had surgery on a head injury sustained against Wigan.

Match winner Jerry Yates is ‘touch and go’ after returning following two games out against Wigan, whilst Ian Poveda is also a doubt after taking a knock.

Marvin Ekpiteta, Rob Apter and Tom Trybull have all trained ahead of tomorrow’s game but a return may come too soon. Shayne Lavery, Gary Madine and Charlie Goode all remain out.

Predicted XI

Grimshaw
Lyons
Nelson
Thorniley
Thompson
Fiorini
Carey
Bowler
Anderson
Yates
Rogers

obbie will be forced into a change at left-back with Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel a possibility to start after replacing Husband at the weekend, although Dominic Thompson could be favoured as a more natural left-back.

Lewis Fiorini should make it three starts in a row at the base of midfield, whilst Sonny Carey could bolster the midfield replacing Poveda, with either Josh Bowler or Keshi Anderson moved out wide. Yates could be risked with Blackpool’s current situation requiring all hands at the pump.

The clash kicks off at 19:45 tonight.

An attacking line up, going for the necessary win.

Central midfield is worrying though. Without a more physical presence there we've got to dominate possession and territory. If not, we could easily get swept aside.

Wigan aren't the opponents tonight.

My guess is we'll come out of the starting blocks trying to get at least 1 early goal.

Blackpool 0-2 Albion

Albion earned an important 0-2 win at Blackpool in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night.

Goals either side of half-time from Brandon Thomas-Asante and Taylor Gardner-Hickman were enough to hand the Baggies all three points.

The result sees Carlos Corberán’s men go sixth in the table - at least temporarily - ahead of a clash against fellow play-off chasers Sunderland this Sunday.

The boss made a single change to his XI in Blackpool, with Karlan Grant replacing the injured Daryl Dike.

It was the hosts who made a stronger start, former Baggie Morgan Rogers hitting the post early on.

Yet, after getting through a difficult beginning, Albion were the ones to open the scoring — Conor Townsend flicking John Swift’s corner towards Thomas-Asante, and the striker making no mistake in firing Albion ahead.

Blackpool had chances to find a leveller before the break, most notably when Keshi Anderson shot just wide after they won possession deep in the Baggies half.

Alex Palmer then made a strong stop to deny Rogers’ low finish as half-time approached, ensuring his side were ahead at the midway point.

Albion came out looking to extend their advantage — Grant having a low effort well-saved and Darnell Furlong hammering a volley off-target.

The second did arrive, though, on the hour mark. Substitute Gardner-Hickman was the beneficiary of great work by Thomas-Asante and Swift, as the Academy graduate swept home and doubled his team’s lead.

Blackpool applied late pressure under the Bloomfield Road lights, but the Baggies held firm to claim successive, and crucial, triumphs on the road.

Albion: Palmer; Furlong, Ajayi, Pieters, Townsend; Molumby, Chalobah (Gardner-Hickman 40); Wallace, Swift (Rogic 71), Grant (Albrighton 79); Thomas-Asante.

Substitutes: Griffiths, Livermore, Malcolm, Faal.

Report: Blackpool 0-2 West Brom

Blackpool lost 2-0 at Bloomfield Road at the hands of West Brom in the Sky Bet Championship.

Goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante in the first-half and Taylor Gardner-Hickman in the second, secured the three points for the Baggies.

Pool had the first chance of the match when Morgan Rogers hit the post from a deflected CJ Hamilton delivery from the left.

In the 18th minute, West Brom took the lead when Thomas-Asante flicked it past Daniel Grimshaw from close range, after a corner delivery wasn’t cleared by Pool.

Three minutes later, after Erik Pieters cut out a long ball over the top by Charlie Patino, Jerry Yates picked up the ball and struck with Alex Palmer off his line, but Yates strike went wide of the post.

Just past the half hour mark, Keshi Anderson had a golden opportunity for an equaliser for Pool, but the midfielder dragged his shot wide after being laid off by Yates.

In added time Rogers once again was free at the back post, but after he controlled a Hamilton delivery from the left, his finish only stung the palms of Palmer.

Half-time: Blackpool 0 West Brom 1

Five minutes into the second-half, Conor Townsend whipped a cross in from the right to Thomas-Asante, but the forward could only direct his header wide, as he fell backwards.

Karlan Grant was the next to try his luck for the visitors, as he benefitted from a block by Patino to receive the ball inside the box, but Grimshaw saved well with his feet.

West Brom doubled their lead when substitute Gardner-Hickman slotted home after a mix-up at the back for Pool allowed the ball to find the midfielder.

A minute later Pool had the chance to hit back straight away when Curtis Nelson rose to head, but the Seasiders’ captain’s effort went over the bar.

In the 68th minute Hamilton brilliantly took down a Jordan Gabriel long ball, but after turning the Irishman shot well over.

Tom Rogic went close late on for the Baggies, as he got on the end of a Townsend pull back, but the substitute fired wide of the mark.

Full-time: Blackpool 0 West Brom 2

Blackpool: Grimshaw, Gabriel, Nelson, Thorniley, Lyons, Fiorini (Holmes 75'), Patino, Rogers (Bowler 64'), Anderson (Carey 45'), CJ Hamilton, Yates
