Dykes 16:02 - Mar 25 with 21045 viewsozranger

Came off the bench with over 30 to go against Cyprus today when Adams went down. Played well and gave a good assist for the second goal. Worked well with his teammates. Many touches and strength quite decent and hopefully he can get back to full playing. With the same quality around him - Chair and Willock - I feel a lot more confident about our near future.

Pretty sure, unless Adams makes a good recovery, he will start against Spain on Tuesday evening.

And Bonne...

I'm still willing to die on the hill that he wasn't a bad idea. Not at that price and wage though obviously.

It's nuts that team didn't even make the play-offs in 97. Impey and Sinclair on the wings, Murray and Quashie midfield, Spencer and Dichio up front. Went to man City near the end of the season and absolutely took them apart.

Sadly the defence, and particularly the goalkeeper, were complete pony.

That dressing room was toxic at the time , most of the players didn’t like the management and were not very professional and seemed to think they were better than what they were

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Had one purple patch and then returned to his previous average form... Sound familiar?

Well I would say he was prolific at Orient, albeit in much lower division, over a longer period of time than Washington was at Peterborough, and then got into double figures without taking penalties in a crap Charlton side that got relegated, so yeh perhaps worth a punt. We didn't take a punt though, we chucked silly money at it. And I'm obviously wrong anyway, because as we now know he's absolute crap.

47 starts, 1 sub appearance, and 23 goals. Spencer was great, and a joy to watch…before it all went a bit strange.

Plus he scored the last goal against port Vale in that game. Plus (I think) another. His nod your head celebration while walking past the crowd for that goal was used by me multiple times after that.

Very QPR transfer that one. Overpaid for the bright, shiny, trendy thing based on what hot streak at Stoke that lasted about four months because the manager of the moment told the chairman if he got him he'd get him promoted. Once here, he simply went back to being the 11-12 goal a season striker that he'd been his entire career before that, and was every season thereafter. Meanwhile Clive Mendonca, who'd been a consistent 15+ goal a season striker in a mostly poor Grimsby side but not had the same press, went to Charlton for a third of the money and did get them up.

So Sheron may have been a terrible signing for the reason you said, but it's our fault not his.

Didn't Houston also let the Costa Rican guy go who then went on to score a hat trick for Derby v Man. Utd?

I quite liked Idryssa Sylla who someone on this board once described as an anti Andy Impey.

Yes. Wanchope. Scored seven goals in two reserve games on trial. Houston said players like that were ten a penny in non-league, then spent £2.4m on Mike Sheron instead.

yeah awful at the back that season, not helped with Bardsley out injured so rather than replace him for a season just played kids or out of position players at right back plus the fixation with playing Karl Ready or Steve Yates at centre half instead of Maddix

We had a spell that season where we were just awful and Houston had this stupid idea of giving everyone a game so we wasted 3 months of the season looking at players like Mark Graham, Andy McDermott and Lee Charles rather than just putting the obvious proper team out.

They were awful but cheap. How about john Spencer. Probably paid around equivalent 60 mill in todays money for literally a hand full of goals

I can't have that, he was the "Man" as he often told us faithful stood or sat behind the goal whenever he scored for us, not only did he score vital goals for us but his work off of the ball was excellent.
Was you at LR when he scored one with his left foot, one with his right foot and one with his head against Barnsley?

Now then, the following season the rumour was that the permantly useless Rioch had grabbed Spencer by the throat and slammed him against the dressing room wall at a pre season freindly game against Exeter I think? I'm not sure If that was the start but he never seemed to be quite the same after that.

Sheron was a big let down for me apart from his 2 goals in the last 10 minutes at Sunderland one wet and windy night, those 2 goals got us an unlikely draw and made the long journey home in a packed Escort van a bit more bearable.

Dykes Is alright.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Thought the rumour was that he booted a manger firmly in the plumbs that season think it was Ricoh and as u Ashted it seemed Togo downhill quickly after that , shame as a great little player for us

Iain Dowie is hugely conspicuous by his absence, too.

Two goals in 34 appearances.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Yes you're right. Some of whom had decent goal scoring records in their spells at top flight/ Premier League before taking into account their championship tallies, which are far better than Dykes'

Similarly you could easily have had Heiðar Helguson on that list. Maybe even Les Ferdinand.

Both had poor spells here.

Three of those goals were against Chelsea, if I recall correctly.

An obvious fit with the QPR No 10 shirt, including the usual frailties; the fact that Houston couldn't spot that tells you everything about why he failed here.

Back to Our Lyndon, this is a quote from the Grauniad post-match comment:

The Spain defence and their own keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, frequently looked panic-stricken. And this, when faced with the Queens Park Rangers forward Lyndon Dykes

I'm still trying to work out if that's a compliment or not.

I think one of the issues was to sign him you had to sign a second Costa Rican, Solis, as part of the deal and we wouldn't do it. Derby had no such problem of course, picked them both up and stuck the other lad in the reserves.

I loved John Spencer, he was the man and partially responsible for me meeting my misses.
After listening to the final few minutes of the Port Vale game in a phone box calling clubcall whilst in Middlesbrough I was obviously a little overjoyed at the equaliser. I returned to the student halls with a mini bottle of vodka in one hand and some other drink in the other, burst through the doors singing only one Johnny Spencer whilst drinking both bottles before falling into the kitchen. My misses was sat there and obviously either thought that man is the one for me or just felt sorry for me one of the two but I have Spencer to thank/blame for the last 25 years together

Too young for Iorfa but Modibo Maiga’s fleeting QPR career was a thing of beauty.
