Unbelievable Jeff 08:58 - Aug 27 with 12713 views | stevec | They’ve sacked LeTiss, Charlie Nicholas and Phil Thompson from Jeff Stellings Soccer Saturday, possibly one of the few things worth watching when Rangers are North of Watford. No idea who their replacements are but whilst I enjoy Clinton Morrison’s delusions of grandeur I suspect we’ll be subjected to a succession of bland compromised replacements. If they take midweek red button away games off us next season I may be forced to cancel.

Who needs a pundit to describe what you've just seen? A match commentator is all you need.

Pundits are there to tell people what opinion they need to form so they can then go on social media and get all angry. [Post edited 27 Aug 2020 22:06]

Not interested in the old dinosaur club on SSN shouldve been rejigged ages ago, though tbf if they go all "woke"" on me then that might just be worse. Just get some top former pros who's views people might want to hear and go with that.

No fan of the old guard, but the replacements should be knowledgeable and engaging. Tokenism for the sake of the politically correct brigade just makes my blood boil. All for change and equality, but poorly conceived, politically motivated knee jerk reactionism isn’t the way forward. .

There's a world of difference between a light-hearted podcast interview going out to a select audience and providing entertaining yet insightful football punditry to millions on a major football TV show. That said, I'd prefer him to Clinton Morrison because at least Nedum doesn't speak Jafaican.

I agree with you - he's not suited to the Super Duper Soccer Sky Sports Centre Saturday thingy. But I think he has a great aptitude for media work generally. Maybe presenting?

I think he lacks the charisma to present in the UK but I wouldn't be surprised to see him move into punditry in the US. Plenty of ex-pats like Jason Roberts and Robbie Earle on US Soccer shows with similar delivery styles to Nedum.

Unbelievable Jeff on 09:56 - Aug 27 by distortR | this site is the closest i get to 'social media', and from reading what you lot say, i think i'll keep it that way. Out of interest, why do you lot use it, beyond talking to mates? This isn't one-up-manship, it's bypassed me. I can also cross the road and be aware of what is happening around me (Albeit, living in the IOM the answer to that is 'not a lot'). |
I've never got the point myself. I've popped in now and again but it just seems to be full of kn8bheads spouting random bile.

I don't really see how this is knee jerk? Thompson was on it for 22 years according to Wiki, Nicholas probably similar, Le Tissier probably at least 15. They've all had a more than fair crack of the whip and are now pretty stale, perhaps not in MLT's case. Freshening up a presenting lineup isn't a bad thing, it was actually refreshing after Keys and Gray went and you realised how crap they'd been. Getting rid of Merson with his 'hilarious' mispronounced foreign names would be a fine thing. It reminds me of the 2010 WC when all the BBC/ITV pundits were happy to admit they knew nothing about any of the smaller teams and the reviews were appalling. Pundits should be able to talk knowledgeably and do research, not just rely on being an ex-player from 40 years ago. Similarly on the cricket front, Botham had become stale, Boycott had become a caricature of himself. Gower was a shame, but most of the new additions have been enjoyable, with the exception of Vaughan. Change happens. I'm a listener of Football Weekly and in the last couple of years they've swapped out their old lineups and have been giving new voices a go and it's been a huge success. FW is a good comparison. I've been listening to it again recently and also James Richardson's new podcast. I much prefer FW at the moment as I learn more whereas Jimbo's gone stale and lazy. No matter what anyone says, he just sarcastically says something like "crikey" and you can almost hear the single sarcastic eyebrow lazily arching up. Well, thanks for that Jimbo. In-depth discussion there.

Unbelievable Jeff on 08:53 - Aug 28 with 1101 views | Esox_Lucius | I have been posting on QPR forums and message boards since the last century and, IMO, our fans are at least twice as knowledgeable about football than the pundits. They serve absolutely no purpose other than a "job for the boys" role. Jim Beglin was atrocious with his "he should have put his laces through that" if a placed shot was saved alternating with "he needed to pick his spot" when a thunderbolt was saved. Absolute paradigm of captain obvious. I have stopped watching televised football over the last few years and stopped my Sky Sports subscription as it just totally failed to excite my interest. On the odd occasion I feel like catching a match that is being televised I usually don't switch to the channel until the whistle is blown for kick off and turn the sound off. I am more than capable of watching the game unaided when I attend live games so why would I need need an out of work "expert" to explain what my eyes can see. /rant

Unbelievable Jeff on 08:58 - Aug 28 with 1096 views | Antti_Heinola | Makes me laugh when people say ‘they better get people who know what they’re talking about!’ What, like Merson? I love Le Tiss, but he’s not exactly Gary Neville either. Soccer Saturday is a lovely show, but it was refreshed before, when it moved on from the Marsh/McLintock era (although Marsh hastened that himself), and it will be again. Sky is rightly going big on BLM but has to back up nice tv packages with action. It regularly has black pundits, although black presenters are confined to SSN. Behind the scenes I observed a more diverse workforce than most if not all media companies I’ve worked at. So the main soccer saturday lineup has become an outlier in their output. It was always going to change and update. I’ve worked briefly with Stelling and he said early on the bosses were not convinced by Merson because he’s not s great broadcaster, but Jeff said he knew viewers would love him and his style that wasn’t totally polished. He was right. For the same reason, I think a lot of people will end up really liking Clinton Morrison if he gets the job. I’ve interviewed him too snd the idea he’s not eloquent is laughable. He’s smart, talks very fast, has loads to say, has loads of opinion. Which is the job requirement. He was also an incredibly nice man too.
