The annual released list thread 2018 on 07:47 - May 18 by D_Alien | There's a couple of things amiss with your assumption First, why would the club not make every possible effort to ensure Davies was as fit as he could be, given how valuable an asset he was on the pitch? It makes no sense whatsoever. People extrapolate from the Conrad Logan situation in a "2+2=5" way. Who knows how his physical circumstances might've changed after joining Mansfield? We just don't, but making the assumption "it must be the club's (Dale's) fault is flawed. There are some who think our training regime, especially pre-season, is too rigorous, leaving the players open to injury and being knackered! But more importantly, you say you don't blame Davies, but as a professional sportsman, how could he not be culpable - if it were true that his weight issues were down to greed/laziness rather than inability to train consistently? We suddenly have experts in metabolism popping on here and sagely suggesting that going on a diet would prepare him for 90 minutes of L1 football, ffs. Of course, correct diet plays a part for sportspeople, but only when allied with the ability to train to the level of fitness required. Just cutting calories would be worse than useless in that situation, counter-productive even So, you and others are doing Davies a disservice. There's been plenty of evidence, not least around the time of the Spurs home fixture, where Davies' desire to play and sheer joy at doing what he does better than most - converting chances - were visible to all but those who don't wish to see. It's what the guy lives for, so why wouldn't he himself do the very best he could to get himself on the pitch, secure a further contract and help himself and his family with his chosen profession? The simple answer - the only one that makes any sense whatsoever - is he and the club tried as hard as possible bur in the end, his injuries took their toll. He'd only been on the pitch a few minutes against Charlton before he broke down, but tried to conceal it and soldiered on to good effect by the corner flag He's gone now, and Hill has expressed regret at having to let him go. People can, and will, think what they like. I know where the laziness lies, and it's not with Davies |
If you look at video footage and pictures of Davies in his time at Blackpool and then at Bradford (I chose those two clubs as they were his two most recent before he joined the Dale), he is much more svelt than he ever has been here. As I've said many times before, not being able to get match fit because of injury is just one of those things - if that truly is the case then you have to feel sorry for a player, especially one who quite clearly possesses the amount of natural ability that Davies does. However, as you know, weight and fitness aren't quite the same thing. Unless you have some sort of thyroid issue or similar, which means it's nye on impossible for you to lose weight, there's no reason for a professional footballer to be overweight. Okay, if you can't train like the *average* footballer then this is quite obviously a stumbling block and makes it more difficult. Nevertheless, there's no doubt in my mind that a proper diet would sort a weight issue out for 99.9% of footballers (if not the fitness issue). With regards to the Logan situation, his horrific injury was far more recent than that of Davies. He's also a goalkeeper, which means that he's not doing the same kind of running around as an outfield player, both in training and on match days. I can't help but think that the reason Logan lost all that weight is because he was put on a strict regime by a high quality dietitian at Mansfield. Now, I can't profess to know what Steven Davies does/eats at home but I'm quite certain that the club could have done more to help him if they really wanted to. This leads me to believe that KH was content with him coming on for 10-15 mins to grab of goal and nothing more. Of course, you could say the manager was vindicated here, as he provided arguably the moment of the season when he smashed in that equalizer against Spurs. With all of this being said, it's only this last year where Davies looks to have really gotten out of shape. He had an impressive first year goalscoring year for us and whilst not as ripped as the likes of Hendo (body of a GOD btw), his physique was OK and resulted in him finding the back of the net on numerous occasions. So what's changed from last season to this? Who knows? Maybe it's one of those blameless situations? It's just frustrating because Davies is a potential 20 goal a season striker and even the Steve Davies of last year would have probably seen us stay up a lot more comfortably had he played this year. If that makes any sense at all.

A possibility - Hill signed him for Barnsley, so once must have rated him.

That does make a fair bit of sense, and not much i could disagree with. What i'd certainly be in agreement with is the 'blameless' aspect of your post, which, whether the club has the right backroom personnel in place or not* seems to me the key point * like any other aspect of sport, the skill sets and motivations of players, managers, physios, dietitians, groundsmen, churs will vary according to status and financial clout. That doesn't mean they're not trying their best, in which case it's pretty harsh to be over-critical [Post edited 18 May 2018 13:15]

What irks me about the whole thing is that only a few years ago, KH claimed we were the fittest squad outside the Premier League (I think he said that anyway). I can't help but think that we've regressed in that sense recently but maybe that's just me being overly critical. Either way, I really hope Davies can find his feet again cause his name is forever etched in the history of the club and Tranmere (as someone suggested) could actually be a really good place for him to start if he so wishes

No not all LOL Decent player should never have been released , but then if your face dont fit KJH wont extend your contract...on the other hand if you are a mate and would obviously not get a club above National league level then hey heres a two year deal . Good plan same for for next season hopefully

Don't know why they ever recalled him from his loan spell. Seemed a bit spiteful to me.......

So no chance of Dale signing Perkins. Always a long shot I suppose.

He’d not played much and then put in a man of the match performance against arguably the best midfield in the country (Man City) at the age of 35. Still one of my all time favourites. Energetic, tough and classy all rolled into one.

Perkins was playing the Kante role before Kante had even thought of being a footballer. Always amazed that he didn't make it higher up the footballing pyramid.
The annual released list thread 2018 on 11:35 - May 21 with 4264 views | Shun | I wonder if Neal Bishop, released by Scunny, could fill that midfielder with mettle role that we’re missing. I can also see Hill going for Daniels if McGahey leaves.
The annual released list thread 2018 on 12:19 - May 21 with 4205 views | BartRowou | I know one Dale fan who will self-combust if we sign Bishop. He looked poor v Scunny last season when he was in midfield (the one where we "battered" them 3-2) and I'm pretty sure he was right-back when we played there recently. Ryan Yates might get loaned out again next year; he's been getting decent reviews for his Scunny performances. He's still young but would anchor the midfield and would let the rest bomb on.

I suspect PG will self-combust no matter who we sign? Or at the very least slate them on here and file them under inadequate.

I wonder if KH would consider or not about bring Donal back to the Dale, now he as been freed by Swindon.
