The simple fact that the head of our supposed democracy is a child of the last person to do it and that their oldest child will be the next one to do it is just plain embarrassing.

Queen gets a £6m annual increase on 02:35 - Jun 28 by Boston
There hasn't been an absolute monarch since the 17th Century, so Betty doesn't actually rule. if she did try to pull a constitutional fast one the government wouldn't take a blind bit of notice. The Monarch is a figurehead, rather like the McCarthy Mor, who would bring in tourist money to Ireland, 'cept he lives in Morocco.
Ha!
There's simply no comparison there, my man. I had to google McCarthy Mór so vague a person is he, but he has no power over me or any other citizens.
The British Monarch, as hubble has pointed out, has actual powers. I agree with you completely that s/he is unlikely to use them but if s/he did do so then the British Government couldn't, as you mention, simply ignore him/her. They don't have the power to do so.

Hold on Brian, they have used those powers and they have vetoed laws and even, as the article reveals: "The[ir] power has been used to torpedo proposed legislation relating to decisions about the country going to war..."
And "at least 39 bills have been subject to Royal approval".
Don't forget Downing Street tried to keep this secret, and this is only what has been revealed by court order. It could be the tip of the iceberg as far as we know.
And in regard to Prince Charles, going back a bit further, from 2011: "Charles has the right to veto new UK laws: Ministers have sought Prince's permission 12 times in five years"
"Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George said: ‘If princes and paupers are to live as equals in a modern Britain, anyone who enjoys exceptional influence or veto should exercise it with complete transparency.
‘The duchy asserts it is merely a private estate. Most people will be astonished to learn that it appears to have effective powers of veto over the Government.’
Daniel Greenberg, parliamentary lawyer at Berwin Leighton Paisner, said: ‘It is something of a nuclear button option that everybody knows he is not likely to push. But like the nuclear deterrent, the fact it is there influences negotiations.’ " http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2055488/Prince-Charles-right-veto-new-la
It's also worth considering who citizens and officials in all walks of life including the armed forces swear allegiance to: the Queen. When I asked my brother - who is a long-serving army officer - who the army top brass would ultimately take orders from, the Queen or the government, he intimated that the army had a large measure of independence, but ultimately their loyalty was to the Queen. Politicians and governments come and go. The monarchy remains.

No idea what you do for a living, but not sure making lots of money is always an indicator of success or in most cases particularly useful.
Stock brokers make lots of money but I wouldn't want one with me when i'm stranded on a desert island.
Unfortunately as a rule we aren't always paid by what we contribute, but rather how much capital we produce.
I also come from a working class council house family in Kilburn and do ok, but it was good luck and the state education system that got me there plus a Unionised public sector job. I feel no bitterness towards others who need a hand.
Most of the people who contribute here probably are too, but don't bleat on about it as if it was something special.
You are only where you are because of help from others, be it an educator, be it an employer, be it your customers. I think it selfish to deny that same opportunity in the form of welfare to others, iPhone or not.
When you are on your deathbed, your money will not bring you any comfort.
When you are on your deathbed, your money will not bring you any comfort.
especially after the Government will have rinsed you for your house to pay for your care ,you are seriously best off having fcuk all these days
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

If those on welfare all contributed 10 hours a week, we could cut the palace maintenance costs down substantially. Any spare hours can be donated to charities, care homes and public services upkeep. What a wonderful world we have then.
I like your thinking JC!!
That's what they do in Spain and Italy.
For the first 6 months of unemloyment and benefit, you owe the community, and have to work 5 days a week. Weeding roundabouts and pavement, laying new pavements etc. It doesn't come for free. Which I agree with. Having thousands of capable people idle when the place is falling apart is stoooopid.
I would also bring back National Service. UK needs it more now than ever.
And no more ublic money for moat cleaning or water leaks under the tennis courts of serving Tory cnts.
Fck the Queen. It's her gaff. Poor management, fix your own roof, buget for a boiler. She's not short of paintings to sell. She's worse than Benefit Street.
Pick the bones out of that from a lefty.

I like the idea of the Queen having actual powers. Especially if they included super strength and the ability to teleport. But this is unlikely, as the Lizard People only have shape shifting.
